No, it served a purpose in the story, and one that will likely be unveiled further on in the sequel trilogy. Part of it is tied to its impact upon Kylo Ren, and the results of which we have not seen.

We know that is not true. The development of the death in TFA developed when Lucas was working on Episode 7 and that seems to be working with the movie as a standalone ala TPM or an episode of TCW. The initial person slated to die was Luke with shades of Ben (and Vader in ANH) and somehow it shifted to Han after Kasdan/Abrams took over. If anything the death of Han was less motivated by the necessity of the story and more by the bts politics in TFA between the various parties such as Kasdan/Ford who have a major hard-on for killing Han since ROTJ and of course Disney needing to sell tickets.

We "know" it's not true?? I would appreciate citations on this BTS info rather than blanket statements of what is known and not known.

Just because Lucas presented a story with Han's death does not mean it wasn't organically built in to the story when Kasdan did his script.

And, my original point still stands that it serves the story, regardless of BTS politics. Technically, the reason Obi-Wan in ANH died was because Guiness requested it. But, it still impacted the story going forward.

Between Rogue 1, and TFA I think Disney Star Wars sucks. Horribly. I am glad there is Doctor who and Star Trek. I know Episode 8 is the last time Carey Fisher will be on screen, but I still won't go see it. I can't stand the new Star wars. Classic trilogy any day. I actually think the prequels were better then Disney Star Wars. Sad...

You know after watching RO CGI Tarkin it makes me hungry for more. Much much more. Tarkin is my favorite baddie in the SW universe. Cushing sells Tarkin as a serious believable Sci Fi main villain and I think Guy Henry did a excellent job on his part in pulling it off. Rough in some edges but overall excellently done. Only Cushing can sell more Tarkin convincingly. He owns that role. I'd like to see more of this to fill in Tarkin's pre ep. 4 backstory. Hopefully this was a learning process and they can be better polished if they do more CGI characters later on. I'm open to them doing OT younger characters with this process to recreate the look. After seeing RO in the theatre and really scrutinizing these scenes after buying the Blu Ray I'm becoming more impressed with what they did here.

Just watched it. Slow to start but it picked up during the second half. I liked Jyn and K-2SO but I couldn't remember who any of the other new characters were. It's depressing that they all died.

I give it a B- pretty good fan film.

ILM needs to step up their CGI face technology, it's a little funny that D-Neg showed them up with Terminator Genisys.

The comparison might be fair if Tarkin was a non-speaking role.

The young Terminator does speak. It's a superior effect. Now maybe that's because they could spend more time/money since it's not on screen as long, but never-the-less.

How is it a fan film?
Most of the value of the movie comes from the shiny coat of Star Wars paint, much like a fan film. Just an observation, I do enjoy me some fan films.

There's something to be said about showing restraint if you know such restraint will result in a superior end result.

The shark in Jaws is a perfect example.

I think RO is far more dark and gritty than most fan films would go.
I don't think RO is a fan film. But "dark and gritty" is kind of a fan film calling card.

I'm told some fan films use naughty words to show how "edgy" they are.

I don't think it is a fan film either, and I think it is willing to go places that fan films usually will not go.
