RINGER: starring Sarah Michelle Gellar

It's not exactly grabbing me, but if the wife wants to keep watching, I'll tag along just to see SMG.

I can't believe nobody smelled blood at that party, or that the corpse didn't start stinking after a day.

btw Jetfire - "she's ruining everything."

btw I know...it is correct in the ep description...I copied and pasted the title from YT for the promo link...it is wrong on there too...I just didn't correct it.

i watched the first two eps and i thought it was fun. sure, it was campy and pretty predictable but i guess i'm just a sucker for soap opera-ish drama.

Second episode didn't work for me at all. I'm a huge SMG fan. I think she's great and have enjoyed her in quite a few movies post-BTVS. But Ringer is either doing it all wrong or I'm just not in the right mood.

Take the corpse in the trunk at the party. Seems like there's two ways they could play it and I don't really understand what they were going for. On a different show they could have played it for laughs. And with the (lack of) attention to detail they showed, it seemed like they were going for madcap comedy but missed it entirely. Or they could play it as a tense scene, which is also what it sort of seemed like they were aiming for. But that didn't work either.

Part of the problem there is I'm just not connecting with SMG in the main role (her sister's easier - she's cold and willing to kill her sister and we barely see her, but at least I get it). Who is Bridget? We didn't get to know her at all before we see her impersonating Siobhan. We get glimpses of her, mostly in comparison to Siobhan: Bridget is more compassionate. But at any point in the show it's hard to know who Bridget is other than she's trying to escape.

Some of the problem is either at the script level or left on the editing room floor. Again, the party: six-month sober Bridget is told when all else fails, she should just drink a lot. Flashbacks show what a messy drunk she was. Siobhan obviously drinks, at least socially. Even drinking a little would be a big deal for someone in recovery. So what do we get to see? Bridget struggling with it? People asking her why she's not drinking? Her dumping her drinks out? Nothing. When she's told she should drink a lot if all else fails (conversation-wise), the only thing we get is a reaction shot of Bridget. And not much of one, because she's pretending to be Siobhan.

We do see others reacting to Bridget-as-Siobhan and noticing they like her more than Siobhan. But it's hard to parse where exactly Bridget is in that mess since she's pretending to be Siobhan. And it's hard to know how to fix it, or if it will just improve over time. Flashbacks are certainly one way, but the drunk flashback doesn't tell us much that we didn't already know: Bridget has a drinking problem and got drunk a lot and acted stupid like drunk people tend to do.

So I think the show's main problems right now are:
- Giving the audience a better idea of who Bridget is
- Finding some better balance of tone or ditching the modes the writers or actors can't handle

I'll still be watching but I was hoping to like it more with the second episode.

this show has a real soap feel to it and I really don't soaps. I love smg though I'll give a couple more episodes.

Tonight at 9PM EDT. :)

I look at Ringer kind of like Fawlty Towers or Allo, Allo; what new complication are they going to dump on Basil or Rene or Bridget next? Bridget takes over Siobhan's 'perfect' life, then it turns out that Siobhan was sleeping with her best friend's husband, who got her pregnant, and someone's trying to kill her, so then there's the dead body of the hitman lying around, where there's going to be a big party, etc. I enjoy it, find it amusing.

ep 3 was kinda slow moving but still enjoyable. i'm wondering how long she can keep acting like shes pregnant though.

Yeah the third episode was okay. Up until now, Bridget was sort of a nicer Siobhan than Siobhan ever was, at least as far as the people in Siobhan's life were concerned (okay, with the exception of the guy she ended the affair with). But when she promised to be honest from now on with her husband, it was definitely somewhat of a fork in the road. By not telling him who she really is, she's going to start screwing him over in a different way than Siobhan did, but it's still not nice. I cringe at the idea of them sleeping together just so she can maintain her cover, but I suppose there's ways the writers can work around that. Like maybe Siobhan really wasn't sleeping with her husband at all anyway. But that would mean he'd know the baby can't be his. Really still not enough information to make any sort of decent guess.

I do wish Bridget would stop taking the gun out of her purse and looking at it like it's an alien object.

Sorry, Buffy fans, but I don't see what the big deal is about SMG. She's wooden and I didn't notice anything about her to suggest she has the charisma to carry a series.

Hasn't anyone told you? Most people don't watch Buffy for the lead character. She's all right, but it's an ensemble show and the supporting characters elevate it quite a bit.
Disagree. Buffy is one of my two favorite characters on the show and the one I most relate to. And she's many other people's favorite character, too. She's usually winning the favorite character polls on forums like Buffyforums. Buffy is one of the most interesting and complex female characters on TV, IMO, especially in the later seasons when a lot of her flaws and issues become more obvious.

I haven't seen Ringer, but SMG was great as Buffy - definitely one of the best actors on the show - and had tons of charisma. She made it seem convincing that a tiny teenage girl is the toughest person in the show.

Maybe you speak for most Buffy fans on this forum, I don't know, but I don't believe you speak for most Buffy fans.

In most "favorite character" online polls I've seen, Buffy is either narrowly beating or narrowly losing to Spike and way ahead of Willow, Faith and Angel.

A friend once said to me after seeing the silent episode: "Buffy was wearing this long dress, so didn't feel like jerking off to her last night"

It was then that I realised that I had never in my like had a sexual thought about Buffy or SMG.

Daphney from Scoobie Doo However?

Wow.

She's almost as hot as Vhelma.

I am enjoying the series...each ep is bringing something interesting. Ep 3 was great.
