Revisiting ST-TNG...

I find it amusing that while there are episodes in Seasons 5-7 that I don't care for yet others quite like I've seen episodes in Seasons 1 and 2 that I see something likable in them while others are ready to write them off without hesitation.

That's because the bad episodes from season 1-2 are warmed-over and inferior versions of better episodes in TOS, and since you're a TOS fan by sensibility, you enjoy bad TOS-style episodes more than average TNG-style episodes.

Or it could simply be that the universe, as a whole, felt a hell of a lot fresher.

Season 1 holds four episodes I rated as good, and I rated them that way on their own merits. Yes, there was some TOS resonance in there and I don't think that was a bad thing. They didn't feel like TOS rip-offs, but something felt familiar in them.

Season 1 also had eight episodes I rated as Fair. A Fair rating is not a ringing endorsement, but an acknowledgement that there was something noteworthy to the episode yet not enough to make it actually good.

I gotta admit that I'm somewhat dragging my ass right now. I was rather enjoying (for the most part) working my way through the first four to five seasons. But I started getting a sour taste in my mouth during Season 6 and I'm finding myself having to really push to get back to these Season 7 episodes.

Picard was presumed vaporized and dead in the opening teaser, the Enterprise, with Riker in command, was then placed on detachted duty to investigate Picard's death..

Ok, I don't see any problems with that, crew members go on leaves, even extended leaves. I don't have an issue with Picard going on one, since he went on several during the show. Ample opportunity for a misadventure or two.

I'm getting ready to watch this two-parter later tonight when I have the time. I'll see if there is anything else of note on the subject.

RAMA

Yeah, I don't recall if Picard simply up and left to do his own thing or if he did, indeed, take leave to do this.

"Phantasms" *

Data's dreams lead to the discovery of a new life form feeding on the crew.

Hmm...let me be succinct about this... :barf:

This was one of the stupidest and most boring things I've ever seen. It was slow and dull as watching paint dry.

'Nuff said.

Folks complain about Season 1, but it's got nothing on Season 7. This is Season 7 so far:

“Descent” (Part II) **
“Liaisons” *
“Interface” ***
“Gambit” (Part I) *
“Gambit” (Part II) *
“Phantasms” *

This was Season 1 at the same point:

“Encounter At Farpoint” **
"The Naked Now" **
"Code Of Honor" *
"Haven" ***
"Where No One Has Gone Before" ****
"The Last Outpost" ***

And I will take "Haven," "Where No One Has Gone Before" and "The Last Outpost" over what I've seen of Season 7 so far. Even "The Naked Now" and "Encounter At Farpoint" were more entertaining.

Dull? I can understand not caring for it, but you're not even giving these episodes a chance anymore. "Phantasms" is wonderfully surreal -- the "cellular peptide cake" is one of the images from the series that has stuck with me after all these years. The episode is worth at least two stars for Data's dreams alone, which are anything but dull.

^^ Maybe you think so, but I don't. At this point TNG has just simply gone off the rails. Excluding the opening credits the first five minutes alone are thoroughly dull---nothing in it that intrigued me in the least...and the episode didn't grab me afterward anywhere along the line.

You might as well just quit watching because you'll just be giving out 1 stars here on out if you don't like Gambit or Phantasms the better offerings of the season. Your head will explode when you get to Force of Nature, Masks, Homeward, Sub Rosa, Emergence.

I make no secret that I am a big TNG Brannon fan and while this wasn't one of his best I thought it was a fair 3 star episode.

The director did a good job in effectively giving the episode a dream-like feel in how it was filmed. I thought Brannon did a good job with the imagery and how it reasonably tied into the real events going on. Brannon always did a good job putting to good use the holodeck--Schisms, Identity Crisis--and here with the use of the holodeck to create Data's dreams. Loved the Freud/Data interactions. Data watching Spot sleep was relateable. The final scene was very neat with Troi bringing in the cake of Data.

The subplot with the engineer crushing on Geordi was amiable.

I agree, you might as well give up. You've got a lot of mediocre-at-best episodes ahead of you, and since you've been awarding a single star to some of the more decent episodes in the season...well, it won't be pretty. You don't even like "All Good Things..." so what's in it for you to continue? A sense of accomplishment? Seems like a waste of time to me.

Um, I agree, though, Phantasms is stupid and very forgettable.

W9, you're almost home just make the final run.

The episodes I remember liking:

“Parallels”
“The Pegasus”
“Lower Decks”
“Preemptive Strike”

If these turn out to be all I get out of this season then it will be a poor experience for certain.

In addition to those four...

"Journey's End" provides a decent send-off for Wesley. "Thine Own Self" provides Troi with what is one of her best storylines, albeit one that is the B-story of the episode.

"Masks" and "Genesis" are both over-the-top, but as moody special effects vehicles, they can be fun.
