According to Parrot Analytics, a data analytics firm who measure demand for TV shows across the globe, Star Trek: Discovery season 2 was a measurable hit. Between April 6 and May 5 - the season 2 finale, "Such Sweet Sorrow", released on April 18 - Star Trek: Discovery was the most in-demand digital original series worldwide. Further, it was the #2 science-fiction series worldwide, narrowly beaten by The 100.

While this period covers the Star Trek: Discovery season 2 finale, it also includes two weeks afterward, suggesting audiences kept discussing the show online and even rewatching episodes. The figures are particularly striking given the show's perceived divisiveness amongst the traditional Star Trek fanbase; it suggests that, in spite of vocal criticisms, Discovery has succeeded in both finding and enthusing its audience. The Star Trek brand looks to be in a very healthy state indeed.

People should think twice before telling haters to get lost, because the unending bickering is, in no small part, what this is measuring.

I thought it only counts positive engagement and intent to watch.

Some of the most vocal claim they don't watch the series. For the rest, I wonder how much of a percentage they actually make. Lack of question mark intentional.

    Isn’t it all “deep research”?

Doesn’t matter if there are only a small number if they’re dedicated and people insist on responding to them. It’s overall chatter that counts. But it’s nice if the ugliness makes the show look good.

I’d be shocked if a Star Trek show didn’t fare well by those metrics. It’s like the nine-point definition of a hardcore Trek fan.

Or it's just a really good show that people enjoy.

If this report was showcasing your favorite show instead of DSC, would you be questioning it the same way? It's kind of like the 2016 election where 1 candidate said the stock market numbers couldn't be trusted, that the numbers were fake, and that it was all a bubble waiting to burst. Then the day after he got elected, he reversed course and said the numbers were all totally accurate and could be trusted.

If Discovery was at the bottom, I imagine fans would be questioning it as well.

I know the show is successful, because CBS keeps pouring money into it. Don’t really need anything else as proof.

Sure I would. We shouldn’t believe things just because we want them to be true.

CBS uses this data to help inform their business and creative decisions. Obviously they also have direct data from their own platforms, but this seems to be a big part of their Star Trek Franchise Group decision making, so I'm going to trust in their calls. Success in Parrot Analytics must translate into ROI on a balance sheet.

I'm willing to bet that's also why The CW renewed The 100 for a 7th season before it aired the 6th. This data correlates with their balance sheets.

It’s perfectly fine as an educated estimate of online engagement, but I don’t really need a consultant to tell me Star Trek has a lot of online engagement.

The actual platform does way way more than just that.

Sure, and I don’t doubt it has value to its subscribers. But what it provides isn’t streaming numbers, which is my only point.

Maybe this means we can finally get that MacFarlane Toys phaser. I'm not giving up hope.

Its more complicated than that. Did you see how "Active Consumption" is second in its hierarchy?

I read PA even looks at how much a show is being pirated online.
