Remake of Babylon 5 ?

I would love to see something else set in the same universe, but I don't want a remake. These actors were 95% of what made Babylon 5 work in the first place.

  • Na'toth caused a lot of character building and story conclsuion too.
And let's not forget Ko'Dath! Or that Delenn was supposed to be a male Minbari in "The Gathering." ;)

I don't think a remake even by JMS would be him dredging up his pre-season one notes and making that, so the show revolves around Sinclair, Laurel Takashima, Doctor Kyle and what have you - but it's true that it's possible he wouldn't have to rejig his arcs as often has he had to do for B5. Sheridan as the commander to start with, probably, for example.

Sidebar: I'm no good at fan casting stuff, but Richard Madden (Game of Thrones's Robb Stark) as Marcus Cole occurred to me after seeing this thread.

I would rather see more stories I think.

I was intrigued by Crusade. It was the same universe - carrying on the story - but not what I had before.

I agree with Temis that if you can successfully recast Spock you can recast anyone. I must say that New Trek did a damn fine job. If you can give me another Bones and make me happy, you are a miracle worker.

However, B5 has more of a nostalgia for me than even TOS Trek. I really have a hard time imagining anyone else as Londo and G'Kar. (For the rest of the cast, I could see new poeple.) But...Londo and G'Kar carried that series for me if so many ways.

Also, some of the secondary characters shocked me with my level of attachment. I dearly loved Vir and Lennier.

Mira Furlan imbued Delenn with such grace and gravitas.

I don't even believe that JMS would have to be involved. B5 blasphemy - I know.

But how can I watch someone ask "Why does the Universe hate me?" and it not be Jurasik?

I bawled over the death of a shower curtain. I felt gutted when they killed Kosh.

Then they killed Marcus and took me to whole new level of crying over a fictional character.

There is just so much tied up with my memories of B5.

If they made more, I would be there with popcorn. Even if the outing is lacklauster. (Legend of the Ranger...cough.)

From I read of JMS' intentions with a remake, that he would cast original Actors in new roles, create new characters for roles where the actor has passed on (IE: G'Kar wouldn't be the character in his role, he would be elevated to legend from history, and a new character would take on G'Kar's original role), and tell the story from a different angle, I would definitely have been itnerested in that, if the financing hadn't fallen through. I have a difficult time thinking of Londo, G'Kar or Delenn being recast, but, I don't they would be, necessarily, certainly not G'Kar, his role would given to another character.

I would love to see Crusade redone, without Network sabotage (It was just getting to the meat of the Series when all the episodes had aired). DAMNED TNT.

I would love to see a Telepath War Movie/MiniSeries.

A televising of the Novel Trilogies would be great too, as would any new B5 project. I think even Rangers could've been something really special if it had gone forward. I don't believe "The Hand" was an ancient race we'd never heard of or that what was presented in Rangers was the truth, I believe they were made up and used as a front for something/someone else.

REMASTER!! not remake or reboot. make it HD and replace the CGI, leave the characters and the story alone.

Don't really see much point in a remake, and all the dangling threads I wanted resolved were taken care of by the Psi Corps, Centauri and Technomage novel trilogies. The only sequel I'd really want to see would be a million-years-later "New Earth" series starring the now-elder-race Humans, and that's never going to happen.

I thought about this while still keeping the ideas of attempting to bring the series closer to the original intended design.

I'd love to think they could do that, but there's too much change needed.

However, they probably could almost go back and do things like strategically remove Talia Winters from every scene, redo some scenes were the dialogue was there just to move the story and not well thought out.

There's really a few key places where I feel like this happened that are important. The biggest one that comes to mind is when a destroyer is sent to help secure the great machine. The captain of that destroyer's dialouge and motives absolutely carry the sense that he's being an ass just so Sincalir can look good. There's certainly more place like this.

I'd love to think remastered is really a possibility but I seriously wonder if they can work within the footage they have to purge unneeded area.

If we're altering Talia's story, I would rather they magically add more scenes to it. Her being a sleeper agent and Ivanova's lesbian lover comes completely out of nowhere. I wish there had been more evidence of the hidden personality doing more stuff while Talia slept.

^There would have been had circumstances outside the writer's control not forced that plot to come to a head *much* sooner than intended.

A remake could tidy that up, but you can't stop a similarly disruptive event from taking place. Such are the realities making TV shows with long overarching plots.

The more I think about it, the less appealing a remake or a continuation is. Why not a BRAND NEW series? New ideas. New characters. Why go over the same ground? Why not a NEW thing to be a fan of?

I'm definitely against remaking Babylon 5. A few hiccups aside, it was fantastic series through and through and I could never imagine someone else playing the likes of G'Kar, Londo, Garibaldi, Ivanova, etc.

However, I do like the suggestion of remaking Crusade because there's some interesting stories to be told there and I'm not so connected to the actors for their particular characters with the exception of Galen. Peter Woodward IS Galen.

But above all else, I want to see the Telepath War. There's so much to be told there and the original actors who play important roles in the conflict are still at reasonable ages that they could play them again.

Hollywood doesn't do that anymore.

But for the record, I agree with you.

This is like asking the Battlestar Galactica fans do you want a remake a few years before Ron Moore got a hold of it... so ask me in a few years. :)

Seriously if someone were to remake the show and it turned out like NuBSG then awesome, great, I'd be all for it. If it turned out like Nu-Knight Rider then no, I'd be against it. Can't make a decision without seeing what they'd do.

And for those religious followers who can't see anyone else playing their favourite characters - grow up. There are other actors infinitely better than half the cast of B5 that would be better suited. Claudia was a lousy actor, but she threw herself into the role well. Andreas Katsulas was an excellent actor, but put someone else in the mask in a new show and you wouldn't know the difference.

Well you would, but it wouldn't matter too much.

There you go. A shame quite a few "geniuses" in Hollow-wood don't seem to get that.

But that doesn't surprise me or upset me. The business is risk averse, because the fans keep demanding MORE of the same thing.

If you were a business man, would you give people what they post on the internet demanding more of or risk millions of dollars that you have to spend millions more convincing people to watch?

Weird.

The thing is, B5 has the potential to open up a whole universe of stories. What we saw was a little 5-year snippet of history. There is so much left to explore.

My personal interest has always been around the events surround the Great Burning (or whatever that was called where Earth seemingly lost all technology and Sheridan and Delenn had become ancient mythology).
