Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

Last night on the freeway there was a car up ahead that never turned on its lights. This wasn't a well-lit freeway either and it wasn't like there were a lot of other vehicles to light up the road so I have no idea what the driver was thinking. This is also a freeway where people love to speed so I was worried that the vehicles that sped past me were going to crash into it.

It seems like I'm seeing more cars driving without their lights on. I think some may be due to daylight running lights that provide some forward light as well as automatic light controls that might be turned off.

Seems to be happening here too as well, and not sure why it's semi common. Might be the automatic lights but surely if you are driving you'd notice that your lights are not on.

A few days ago during my bike ride on a cloudy morning, I was a few seconds away from crossing in front of a car that I didn't see at first because it didn't have it's headlights on. It was a dark green that was almost the same color as the trees and bushes, with a black stripe that was pretty much the same color at the road. If I had gone just 10 second earlier, I can almost guarantee you I have been hit. Luckily I managed to look one last time just as it finally hit a point where I could see it.

If I knock mine off auto, the car is also very vocal about letting me know it. I can also set the sensitivity, but I don't know if either are a cross-brand thing as this is my first car that has auto-lighting

Since the pandemic started and people have been working much more from home, I've enjoyed looking at the backgrounds of people's screens when they're sharing video in a meeting, hosting a webinar, being interviewed on the news, etc., to see if I can spot any SF&F merch/memorabilia. A surprising number of people have Star Wars merch, but I have spotted things from other franchises here and there. My favourite, of course, is Sudden Unexpected Star Trek.

Sometimes you don't even need to look in the background. I was watching a video on CTV's site yesterday about a man who had been cut off from hydro for over eight years () after a health crisis rendered him temporarily unable to pay his bill. At one point, they were interviewing his neighbour, who has been helping him out by making him meals over the years, when there was Sudden Unexpected Star Trek front and centre!

A "Vulcan Science Academy" mug! Nice!

(And the happy ending to the story... after CTV contacted the hydro company on the man's behalf, they finally relented and restored his power. He was able to turn on the lights in his apartment for the first time in almost a decade!)

nice - i especially like all those not-used designer kitchens

Does anyone use scented booster beads when doing laundry? Decided to buy one after noticing it at the store. I can smell the scent they advertise right out of the wash, but once I put it through the dryer, that scent is gone.

P.T. had a similar trick. ;)

Barnum's American Museum was so popular that people would spend the entire day there. This cut into profits, as the museum would be too full to squeeze another person in. In classic Barnum style, old P.T. put up signs that said "This Way to the Egress." Many customers followed the signs, not realizing that Egress was a fancy word for "Exit." They kept on looking for this strange new attraction, the "Egress". Many patrons followed the signs right out the door! Once they had exited the building, the door would lock behind them, and if they wanted to get back in, they had to pay another admission charge!

Modern museums make sure that the last thing you see before you exit is the gift shop.

Never mind RoboCop or ER...Paul McCrane will always be Pete Conrad in my mind.
