Question to ponder about about Star War live-action series

So I was thinking today with the popularity of Clone Wars and the up-coming live-action series, will these series change the way we look at the six theatrical films?

I mean in a way that the series of Stargate SG-1 did to the original move or even "Ark of Truth" and "Continium". In other words, by the time both series are complete, years from now, will we look at the six theatrical films as just big budget versions of the TV series? Because we'll have many more hours of true Star Wars canon on TV than what we've seen on the big screen.

BTW, looks like the Clone Wars are doing 22-episode seasons, which is quite high for an animated series these days.

I, personally, think that the TV Series won't have an impact on how people view the movies. To many they are timeless pieces.

If the Star Wars brand can survive Itchy, Lumpy and Jar Jar Binks, then it can survive a live-action TV series. :-P

It might do that for future generations, and kids watching the show.

But, come on now, we know that live action show is about as likely to happen as someone succesfully navigating an asteroid field.

Too true. I've about given up on the whole thing. Its been years and we haven't heard a scrap of info. No production art, story leaks, or even casting notes. I'm betting the ideas been dropped in favor of the Clone Wars series.

I agree, I think they rather do the Clone Wars Series 2 and worry about other stuff later. There is a long future to think about milking the franchise.

I think people will, by and large, remember the OT, and all the rest will only be for purists, similar to "Lord of the Rings" (the books) vs. Silmarillion, Children of Hurin, etc.

I mean, check out Wikipedia's SW infobox. ANH and Caravan of Courage get roughly equal textual billing. But who the **** cares about, or has even seen, Caravan of Courage?

"And, in time, only the bards knew the truth of it." Lloyd Alexander, The High King.

I hate to say it as a long time uber-SW fan, but the silliness of the whole CW effort has just about completely turned me off the franchise.

I think the new Star Wars live action series should star about a half dozens actors and actresses in their late 20's who are playing teenagers. They should each have a secret love for another character who in turn loves another character who.... They should spend long periods having sulky pouts because they aren't getting what they want, and they should have wild short term flings out of sexual frustration with people they hate. Then there should be a lightsaber fight.

The show will rejuvinate the franchise.

I have a buddy who's kind of high up at Lucasfilm...I'm going to e-mail him right now and try to find out if it's still even close to happening.

Star Wars 90210?

My kids loooove the Clone Wars series. I was really surprised to see them react to it the way they did. I wouldn't be surprised at a new generation love affair with Star Wars.

There's never been a question about it happening or not, it's just a matter of how long it takes. After all the Clone Wars series took 3.5 years to surface despite being announced BEFORE Sith came out, and we heard and saw practically nothing on it before the movie came out. Lucas just works in secrecy, that's all. I wouldn't be surprised if they waited to finish the 100 Clone Wars episodes before shifting focus to the live-action show, and if I recall correctly they've already made 40 or so months ago.

I don't think it will color how people view the previous movies/series. With "Star Wars", I've noticed people (in general) are very good at separating the stuff they like and don't like from each other. A lot of people didn't like the "Clone Wars" animated movie, but that doesn't change how they viewed the previous Cartoon Network Clone Wars series. For my part, my overall disappointment in the prequels never touched my enjoyment of the original trilogy.

The only question I have re: the series is - when the heck is it going to air?

While true, but like I said, if these new series create a whole new generation of Star Wars fans like TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT did for Trek fans (talking about milking a franchise), then I can see these new viewers and fans to look back at the six theatrical films as say, "Although the films came first, they're just more or less book ends to the story we have now." After all, this new series will more or less tell the story of the birth and growth of the Galactic Empire and the Rebellion that we know of from the OT, and the films will just be what led up to that and what followed. Much like what Roland Emmerich's film "Stargate" did and then how "Ark of Truth" and "Continium" did for SG-1.

When it's done. :D

According to Wookiepedia they're aiming for second quarter 2010 to air this. They are in negotiations with HBO to pick it up.

The movies were a worldwide box office sensation that crept into the pop culture of an entire generation.

The show(s) will hopefully be successful and critically successful, but to even dent the legacy of the movies they would need to reach amazingly high TV ratings, and they really have no chance of that.

I just ignore it, hoping against hope that Star Wars might someday amount to something again.

A Star Wars series able to interest HBO is almost impossible to imagine at this point...

Well, that's already happened because you have people like Lindley here who think more of the EU books(which most people hate)and he gets angry when people ask questions like "How come the whole Empire fell with the death of the Emperor and the destruction of Death Star II at the end of ROTJ?"

He acts like, "Don't you know the REAL story is told in the books?!?"
