Question to ponder about about Star War live-action series

"Angry" is far too strong a term. "Exasperated", maybe. Also, "most people" do not hate the books. Most people haven't read them. Their loss. Some are crap, but enough are good to make them worthwhile on the whole.

And I fail to see what's -worthy about wiping out 90% of the established Star Wars timeline, events, and in some cases entire characters' lives on a whim, just because of the medium it was told in. Granted, something similar is happening with Trek right now, and I'm not up in arms about that; so maybe if there was a good reason for it I could be convinced.

Little things here and there are fine. If you can tell a better story by ignoring some minor point, go for it. I simply don't trust Lucas to be a good enough storyteller to make major sweeping changes worthwhile.

I don't think it will color how people view the previous movies/series. With "Star Wars", I've noticed people (in general) are very good at separating the stuff they like and don't like from each other. A lot of people didn't like the "Clone Wars" animated movie, but that doesn't change how they viewed the previous Cartoon Network Clone Wars series. For my part, my overall disappointment in the prequels never touched my enjoyment of the original trilogy.

While true, but like I said, if these new series create a whole new generation of Star Wars fans like TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT did for Trek fans (talking about milking a franchise), then I can see these new viewers and fans to look back at the six theatrical films as say, "Although the films came first, they're just more or less book ends to the story we have now."

Well, that's already happened because you have people like Lindley here who think more of the EU books(which most people hate)and he gets angry when people ask questions like "How come the whole Empire fell with the death of the Emperor and the destruction of Death Star II at the end of ROTJ?"

He acts like, "Don't you know the REAL story is told in the books?!?"

I always knew that there was something I liked about Lindley. ;)

The EU has some really good stuff, and some really bad stuff. Just like the movies.
According to Wookiepedia they're aiming for second quarter 2010 to air this. They are in negotiations with HBO to pick it up.
A Star Wars series able to interest HBO is almost impossible to imagine at this point...
I don't see why. People still love Star Wars, and Lucasfilm would most likely almost entirely fund the production of the series themselves, much as they did with the films, leaving HBO to basically be the cable version of 20th Century Fox.

After all, this new series will more or less tell the story of the birth and growth of the Galactic Empire and the Rebellion that we know of from the OT, and the films will just be what led up to that and what followed. Much like what Roland Emmerich's film "Stargate" did and then how "Ark of Truth" and "Continium" did for SG-1.

A lot of that will depend on the strength of the writing and acting. I have zero doubt that Lucasfilm can turn out incredible scenery, costumes, effects, alien makeup etc. I actually have a predisposition against prequels or "bridge" stories, but if they're written well and the acting is good, then you can sort of "forget" that you're watching a story set in the past or in between movies and instead focus on the story itself.

It also occurred to me that once this series airs, it will give more fodder to the canon-ites regarding "on screen" versus "book" events. Since there hasn't been a full live action Star Wars series before, I wonder where Lucas will put it into his "levels of canon" chart.

All good points. Especially the latter. I'm sure those well versed in the EU will find some fault in the canon if it doesn't adhere to what's been available so far in that period. Has there actually been anything written in the EU that covers this period other than the "Dark Times" comic series?

With that said, I'm kind of disappointed that Lucas cut out the Rebellion forming scenes in ROTS. Those scenes would have been a good lead up to the series. Which brings up another question actually. I wonder how this new series will be framed. 2.35:1 or 1.78:1? Clone Wars is rendered in 2.35 (but airs on CN in first runs in 1.78)

I think the new Star Wars live action series should star about a half dozens actors and actresses in their late 20's who are playing teenagers. They should each have a secret love for another character who in turn loves another character who.... They should spend long periods having sulky pouts because they aren't getting what they want, and they should have wild short term flings out of sexual frustration with people they hate. Then there should be a lightsaber fight.

The show will rejuvinate the franchise.

They made this. It's called New Battlestar Galactica.

Well, everything but the lightsabers.
