PS3 Questions

See, I *own* all those games and the only game I would recommend is LBP... and even then, it's a fairly tepid recommendation.

R&C is alright, but I never finished it...
Resistance 1/2 and Killzone 2 are fairly blah though.
I like MGS4, but you really need to have patience to sit through it...
And Infamous - admittedly, I haven't tried it yet. It's still sealed.

Really, Uncharted 2 looks like a sure bet simply based on the beta - they fixed the shooting, which was my main problem with the first game. And Heavy Rain just because it promises to be either something awesome or a spectacular failure.

And hey, there's Pixel Junk Eden and Flower.

depends on what KIND of game you want, but Uncharted and Assasin's Creed will show you the graphic power of the PS3

Nothing that's out now... Uncharted 2 in the fall and Heavy Rain next year.

Are you kidding? NOTHING that's out right now? I couldn't disagree more. Here a just a few off the top of my head.

Resistance Fall of Man
Resistance 2
Ratchet and Clank Future Tools of Destruction
Infamous (This would be #1 on my list)
Killzone 2
Metal Gear Sold 4 (if you like the Metal Gear series)
Little Big Planet (I throw this one out there because I've heard a lot of good things about it even though I've never tried it.)

Those are just exclusives, there are tons of cross platform games out there as well.

I couldn't disagree more, most of those games suck Out of the games on you're list the only one I'd say is a great game is MGS4 (provided you played the other ones) with Infamous being a good game. The Resistance games and Killzone are pretty generic shooters when you compare them to the rest of the stuff out there and Little Big Planet is sort of meh

Whatever you want to call it dude, they were PS3 exlcusives that made me happy to have a PS3. Don't regret playing them for a second and I eagerly await R3. Killzone was little less fun, but still a good shooter IF you like shooters. Which happen to be my favorite genre. So if BB likes shooters, he/she should give them a shot. The first Resistance can probably be had for less than $20 now.

Infamous is another great PS3 exclusive Botany Bay. It's not exactly a shooter, but kind of along the same lines. Kind of cross between a sandbox game, Crackdown, and The Force Unleashed. If you get a new PS3, this one of the games I'd pick up first.

Eh...yeah, as a recent purchaser of a PS3 who had been looking forward to the Resistance games, I was very underwhelmed by R1. So much so that I still haven't even finished it, and I've had the game for over a month.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Metal Gear Solid 4 are both fantastic, though, the latter especially so if you're a longtime MGS fan.

Well, see that's kind of the whole problem of someone coming in and asking about what games to play. You dislike a game, and I loved it. So which of is right? Both of us. Neither of us. It's just all subjective.

Thing is, if you were looking for a shooter, you'd do better with a Call of Duty game. The problem is that since we're in the summer of waiting, pretty much a better version of every game that's out now will be released within the next few months.

Killzone looks nice, but it's such a standard shooter that I personally can't recommend it over something like Call of Duty 4, even if that game is 2 years old and will be replaced in October.

And while Resistance has some interesting ideas, it's clear that Insomniac is not a shooter house yet.

Of course, I'm only considering single player experiences... and I'm probably in the strange situation where I've played so many FPS games that I can see the cliches within the first 10 minutes of a game and if I see spawn triggers, infinite spawning enemies, box-like arenas and enemies with super sniper vision who only target you and no one else, the game automatically gets tossed to the bottom of the pile.

I prefer sports - haven't played a shooter in years, but this is a good place to start seeing I only have one controller at the moment

I would strongly urge you to get Uncharted. That game is just totally awesome. And that way you can get ready for Uncharted 2 which is releasing later in the year.

Another game that I think every PS3 owner should have is Valkyria Chronicles. It's mostly a strategy game with a few RPG and shooter elements thrown it. It's also my personal 2008 GOTY.

As for the other problems you mention, I guess I just thank God I'm too stupid to realize all the faults because I enjoyed those games immensely. Guess I'm just too easy to please.

Valkyria Chronicles is interesting, and I'm glad Sega somehow managed to see an increase of 400% in sales a few weeks ago because of fan campaigns and a price drop... but it really takes a lot to get into.

First and foremost, you have to at least be able to stand anime. If you're a person that absolutely loathes anime, the game will most likely drive you insane. And indeed, in typical JRPG fashion, you spend more time watching cutscenes than actually playing the game.

That said, the actual gameplay is pretty solid for the most part. At the very least, it's a nice refreshing take on the SRPG genre. You still need to grind (well, unless you play like me and just download a save game from GameFAQs), but at least you don't have to grind individual characters.

I still think that Uncharted is a somewhat flawed game saved by incredible presentation. It's worth picking up if you enjoy old fashioned adventure action movies in line with Sahara or The Mummy, but the sequel looks like it fixes the shooting aspect of the game entirely.

I rarely play shooters for the multiplayer anymore, especially since the only game I really enjoy online is Battlefield. So I'm hoping MAG will be great.
I suppose Warhawk is a good recommendation, since it still has a decent player base and I think the base game is fairly decent.

Well I'm not saying those elements might exist, but I'm saying it's subjective as to whether or not a person can have fun with them. I did, apparently you didn't. It's just all personal preference. For Botany Bay, I'm recommending the first Resistance because it can be had pretty cheap right now.

As for buying all the games, I've had to cut way back. They've just gotten too expensive. For me, another big plus of Resistance, I felt like I got some "bang for my buck" as it was a fairly long game. Some of these newer (and I guess you say improved) style games simply are WAY too short.

Stuntman Ignition is fun.
If you want a tennis game, stick with Virtua Tennis 3, it's cheaper and the new version has hardly any improvements or new extra's.
Everybody's Golf : World Tour is nice.
Ridge Racer 7 is very similair to the PSP versions, but still a fun arcade racer.
Racedriver GRiD and Colin McRea's DiRT are also great racing games.

And most if not all can be gotten cheap.

Absolutely agreed. Valkyria Chronicles is one of the most unique games on the system and probably the best game of 2008

Regarding Blu-ray playback, the only major issue IMO is the lack of an IR port which is an issue with universal remotes. There are players with superior audio support but it does make a fine player and is indeed one of the fastest as a PS3 is essentially a full-featured computer. I recently bought a Pioneer blu-ray player which was quite expensive when new but painfully slow to load discs compared to the PS3.

Yeah, they basically want you to buy a PS3 remote.

But then again, the controller and on screen menu works pretty well.

I bought the one below for £7, works a treat, comes with a wee dongle type that that plugs into a free USB port...and away you go.....Pics are actual size.
