PS3 Questions

Hey gaming experts!

A couple of questions :

1) Will PS2 games work on a PS3?

2) Will DVD's play on a PS3?

3) Anyone had issues with the Blu-ray player on the PS3?

4) Is there much improvement in game quality between PS2 and PS3?

Thanks in advance :)

1) Only on some models

2) Yes

3) Not me

4) Graphically, no doubt. Game play depends more on the game than the console.

What I'm loving most about my PS3 are the Blu-Ray capabilities and the upgradeable hard drive. I swapped out my 5400 RPM 80 GB drive for a 7200 RPM 500 GB. And it goes without saying that the graphics are outstanding.

Thanks, appreciate the replies guys.

My problem is that my PS2 has just crapped out (after almost constant use for a decade - not bad). But I still have loads of PS2 games I love playing.

I've been refusing to touch the PS3 till it drops below $500, but it hasn't budged below about $680 in years.

Is it fair to say that there won't be a PS4 ie: the PS3's major parts can just be replaced/downloaded like Anthony mentioned?

If you don't care about blu-ray then I would say go Xbox 360 (someone had to say it :) )

PS2 backwards compatibility is useless to nonexistent in newer models of PS3.

Oh there will be a PS4, but i don't think it will be here for a while. Sony plans to keep the PS3 going for a long time. I think they have plans for a console life of at least 10 years. Heck the PS2 is still being manufactured and still has new games coming out for it almost a decade after it was released.

What Anthony Sabre is referring to is just the internal hard drive in the PS3. It is the only component that is made to be user replaceable and all the replacement does is put a larger hard drive in the PS3. It does not affect the operation or graphics of the console in any way.

If you have an HDTV the Blu-Ray player is a great feature on the console and the "high-def" graphics are a without a doubt a significant improvement over the PS2.

You can also use your PS3 to access and play music, pictures and video that are stored on your PC so it makes a pretty darn useful media hub as well.

Oh a warning, the current versions of PS3's that are in stores are NOT compatible with PS2 games. The original 2006 PS3 console released had the PS2 emotion engine for backwards compatibility. Sony removed the PS2 Emotion Engine chip in March of 2007 and went to software emulation...a much buggier and inferior mode of playing PS2 games on the PS3. In October/November 2007 they released a version that had no backward compatibility with the PS2. Since then all PS2 backward compatible PS3's (hardware or software emulation) have been discontinued.

Your best bet is to grab a slimline PS2 and just continue to enjoy the PS2 games that you already own.

Hey gaming experts!

A couple of questions :

1) Will PS2 games work on a PS3?

Only on some models which I don't believe are in production anymore. Early PS3's included both the PS2's Emotion Engine chip and its GPU. Later models only included the GPU and emulated the Emotion Engine via software. Neither type of model is in production anymore.

2) Will DVD's play on a PS3?

Yes, and they generally look excellent as the PS3 upscales them. It does have a little trouble with non-anamorphic DVDs, though.

3) Anyone had issues with the Blu-ray player on the PS3?

Nope, none and I have a growing Blu-Ray collection. The PS3 is one of the better Blu-Ray players on the market.

4) Is there much improvement in game quality between PS2 and PS3?

Yes and no. The PS3 is a generation ahead of the PS2. There are games that take advantage of the additional capabilities of the PS3.

There are also games which feel like PS2 games with the screen resolution turned up. Thankfully, the Wii and the Xbox 360 get much more of the shovelware than the PS3 does.

If you don't care about your console breaking down repeatedly then I would say go Xbox 360 (someone had to say it :) .

Back at ya! :p

OK, silly console war flaming aside, the PS3 is still the best blu-ray player on the market. I have both a PS3 and a blu-ray player, and the PS3 is a better choice. It's upgradable through firmware upates as they update blu-ray profiles. It also fires up and loads much faster than my stand alone player. When I want to watch a blu-ray upstairs, I basically have to turn it on and then go read a book while it decides to fire up allow me to open the disc tray. Then a few days later when it finally opens up, I can load a disc and it's about another week to get the movie going.

(OK,OK so I'm exagerating there), but it is slow, whereas the PS3 is pretty fast. IF you are REALLY wanting a blu-ray player then I REALLY recommend the PS3.

The PS3 is a great DVD and Blu-Ray player. That said, I personally find its library lacking. Yes, I know, people will call me crazy and point out games like Little Big Planet and Uncharted and Killzone. None of those games do much for me though and well over 90 percent of my gaming is done on my 360. My PS3 pretty much sits there as a Blu-Ray player and glorified PS2. If I was in your position, I would buy a cheap used PS2 and a 360. If you want a backwards compatible PS3 you will have to buy a used PS3 and specifically request it when you go to pick it up at a gamestop

1) Will PS2 games work on a PS3?
No, only the North American 60gig and the Asia 20gig had full PS2 hardware compatibility, The Eu/UK 60gig had half hardware/half software PS2 compatibility.
If your buying a new PS3 now, there wont be any backward compat in it for the PS2, although all PS3 come with complete PS1 backward compat.

2) Will DVD's play on a PS3?
Yes, and they will also be upscaled if you have a HDTV

3) Anyone had issues with the Blu-ray player on the PS3?
Nope the PS3 seems to be the top range BR player, and is the only machine that can be upgrade from BR profile 1.0 right up to the present 2.0.

4) Is there much improvement in game quality between PS2 and PS3?
Oh the difference in quality is eye watering, but be aware, once to dip into High def gaming you can go back.

Thanks again guys.

I ended up getting the PS3 for $618 ($500 US) and they threw in a blu ray remote and cable I needed.

Watched TOS Season 1 on the Blu Ray player - very very impressed with the picture quality

Next paycheck I should probably get a game - any suggestions for great PS3 games?

If i can suggest a few must buy games.

For First person shooters you must get
Resistance: Fall of Man. 1 and 2.
Uncharted: Drakes fortune.

Racing games.
Motorstorm
Grand T Prologue.
Paradise Burnout.

Puzzle and platform
Little Big Planet.

Those few games are a must have with your new console, and they all should be really cheap to buy as they have been out a while.

Burnout Paradise might be worth downloading. Having it just there and the fact that you can just play for 10 minutes at a time is pretty great, actually.

Speaking of which, if you do use the online store, you should grab Flower and Pixel Junk Eden.

The only problem with buying it on the PSN is that its ludicrously overpriced compared to getting a copy online of in the shops, its still £25 for the basic copy and £30 for the basic copy with all the free updates and the party pack.

What ever happened to digital distribution being cheaper...

Oh and remember you have a massive amount of free demos to download and try, that should keep you busy for some time.:)

you can pick up burnout paradise ultimate box for around £20 to £25 new now, is it any wonder developers and publishers are so keen to force digital distribution on the gamer (but thats for another thread)

Nothing that's out now... Uncharted 2 in the fall and Heavy Rain next year.

Are you kidding? NOTHING that's out right now? I couldn't disagree more. Here a just a few off the top of my head.

Resistance Fall of Man
Resistance 2
Ratchet and Clank Future Tools of Destruction
Infamous (This would be #1 on my list)
Killzone 2
Metal Gear Sold 4 (if you like the Metal Gear series)
Little Big Planet (I throw this one out there because I've heard a lot of good things about it even though I've never tried it.)

Those are just exclusives, there are tons of cross platform games out there as well.

I couldn't disagree more, most of those games suck :p Out of the games on you're list the only one I'd say is a great game is MGS4 (provided you played the other ones) with Infamous being a good game. The Resistance games and Killzone are pretty generic shooters when you compare them to the rest of the stuff out there and Little Big Planet is sort of meh
