PS3 Questions

Well, the PS3 slim talk has resurfaced with more rumors recently, this time coming from Ars Technica. The more I hear about it the more likely it seems to me. It doesn't hurt that Activision strongly hinted that they would stop supporting the PS3 if a price drop didn't come

Personally I hope they bring back backwards compatability. The only reason I bought a PS3 as early as I did was so that I could have the BC functionality. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there who really wants this feature

I can't imagine it'd add PS2 compatibility. They're working on a way to get the EE to work on Cell, but apparently the problem is that they need a way to recompile PS2 code to run on the new architecture on the fly.

It's there but it's not intuitive (again, it's much easier to just skirt the issue with an older PS3 or just get a slimline PS2). I'm betting that the "PS2 compatibility" will really hit around Christmas this year as part of PSN, since a few PS2 'greatest hits' titles will be offered there.

Yeah, that's the mission I'm talking about... but you can do it in one turn with Alicia. At least, I think you can.

Possible but not reliably. She either needs to 'spark up' (which happens about 1/4 of the time) or get VERY lucky on the run through the tank and emplacements in the middle. Otherwise she uses up her ammo before she can clear out the target.

I'm still somewhat skeptical, but if they can manage to get it work I'd be less worried about my old PS3 dying.
My understanding is that it's almost impossible to get a 60GB repaired nowadays.

As for VC. I'm not sure if we're talking about AP or an actual turn? If you use orders to activate all her powers, Alicia can run the gauntlet to the flag, kill everyone, then capture the base on the first turn using several AP of course.

That makes sense, actually... I keep forgetting to use orders in the first place. Probably made the game a lot harder in places than it needed to be. :)

If you don't care about blu-ray then I would say go Xbox 360 (someone had to say it :) )

PS2 backwards compatibility is useless to nonexistent in newer models of PS3.

Spoken like a tru X360 fanboi. :P Fat lot of good a X360 is going to do for his substantial PS2 collection. :P

On the newer PS3s, backwards compatibility is not built in, but there are quite a few ways to get it. The absolute easiest is to get a PS1 game from the PSN store for a couple of bucks - the first time you install it, the new emulator software will download for all PS1 and PS2 support. The other ways require a settings and firmware update which isn't quite as intuitive.

Your best bet, though, is to try to find one of the older PS3s (they're still out there, just dig a little) which has all the features 'on the board', including the hard drive. You'll be VERY glad you did.
I think someone already called bullshit on your magical downloadable PS2 backwards compatibility. I'm not what I would call a '360 fanboi', I bought a launch PS3 (20gig) not long after I got my 360, and a Wii not long after that.

The only thing PS3 can really point to is 'superior hardware reliability' and blu ray support. My PS3 was bad out of the box (slot loading mechanism sounded like a dying airplane propeller and wouldn't take a disc). My Xbox 360 had to be sent to Microsoft twice, once for not being able to read disc (seemed like it refused to spin up), and once for the dreaded RRoD. My Wii has been running like a champ the whole time, despite my terrible mod job on it.

The PS3 was such a botched release that Sony is still playing catchup. The whole architecture was a mess, some of the best developers in the world still look at it and scratch their heads. PSN isn't as good as Xbox Live. Home is useless. Neither Resistance nor Killzone can compete with Halo or Gears of War. To this day chances are any given cross platform game will be better on 360, despite the supposed inferior hardware.

Don't get me wrong, there are always reasons to prefer one platform over another. If you're into JRPGs for instance, going PS3 is probably a no brainer. But you'd have to be blind to not see that Sony has made a ton of mistakes with this thing to where they went from completely dominating in the PS2 vs Xbox vs GC days to lagging behind.

To be honest, I didn't use them much either. I'd rather have the chance to move my guys.

Shockingly enough, the 360 and PS3 are on par with JRPGs

Indeed. Alicia is pretty unstopable without orders. With orders shes God-like

Not really my genre. But I have to assume that at some point the tides will have to turn on that one. I mean, how many 360s have they sold in Japan? 20?

30. And half of them red ringed. :p

But surprisingly there are a lot more JRPGs on the 360 than there are on the PS3 - if you don't count PS2 releases of course.

Namco Bandai puts their RPGs on the 360 first, MS has/had Mistwalker and Square dumped a RPG onto the 360 as well.

Frustratingly, only in the states. (There's quite a few double-releases or 'seasonal exclusives' in Japan we don't have here). And, even more frustratingly, it's because the execs at SoA "don't want any Japanese games for a North American audience."

Idiots.

yeah there are a couple of double dips like Eternal Sonata (which also came out here on PS3) and Tales of Vesparia which may come out here as well, though I'm not sure of that. In the case of Tales of Vesparia though I would consider re-buying it for PS3 simply because it is the best RPG of the current generation :D

Ahh sounds like Sony back during the PS1 days. Boy did they change their tune after Final Fantasy VII

Personally I don't really mind since most of the good RPGs are popping up on the 360. If Sony does something that keeps me from getting Persona 5 though, heads will roll

I would strongly urge you to get Uncharted. That game is just totally awesome. And that way you can get ready for Uncharted 2 which is releasing later in the year. ;)
.

Thankyou so much for the tip on this game - played it for hours last night - totally hooked!

I am finding myself enjoying a lot of PS3's second-tier titles now, like Dynasty Warriors, etc, more than I thought I would. But SoA really needs to get on the ball and get some good games out. Hell, just making PS3 versions of some of the greatest PS2 hits would go a long way....

Oddly, though, the 'console' to get with the most RPGs, and most GOOD RPGs is... the PSP (followed by the DS). It saddens me that the 'big boys' really have given RPGs such a miss this time out, particularly since that genre really is what made the PS2 such a hit.

I haven't really done too much gaming on my PSP (or DS for that matter). Again, that will all probably change when Persona comes out on it this September on the PSP :D Right now though I've been sucked into Devil Survivor and The World Ends With You on the DS. I'm a sucker for modern day RPGs haha

Heh, I've been playing a ton of Final Fantasy VII on my PS3 lately. It was released on the PSN store for $10 a couple of weeks ago. What a bargain. :D

Pshhh who needs the PSN version when you've still got the good old fashioned disc version sitting on your shelf :p Hopefully FF13 will be more like FF7 and less like the turd pile known as FF12

Does anyone else have problems with PSN? I have some days that are fine but many days where I keep getting logged out of PSN and then I have to sign in again, only to keep getting disconnected every 30 mins or so.

Not sure why it happens but it pisses me off when I am in the middle of an online game.

Do you have a router by any chance, i have a router and it used to kick me off the PSN randomly, a firmware update for the router solved the issue.

Now the PSN is perfect, the only issue i ever have is with Burnout Paradise, if i try to go online with it the game signs me out of the PSN and then actually freezes my router to the extent that its dead even if the PC tries to access the internet, only a full hard reset will bring it all back......no doubt a hardware issues seeing as my router is a few years old.
