Prometheus 2: Apparently it's happening

It's Hollywood where anything can happen, and such tweets can simply be motivation and negotiation in disguise. They get attention.

True, but at the same time, we haven't heard anything in ages (hence the tweet to Blomkamp). Disappointing if true.

Damn shame if true. It's the project i'm really interested in. Maybe they are keeping low key so as not to take the wind out of Ridley Scott's Alien movie.

Why post a deferred link?

I didn't know if it'd be against the forum rules to directly link to something like that, that's why. I've stumbled a couple of times with linked pictures on this site, so I figured this time it wouldn't hurt to be careful.

Speaking of forum protocol, it's probably about time we got this thread title changed from "Prometheus 2: Apparently it's Happening" to "Alien Covenant: It's Definitely Happening," isn't it?

Can't be as bad as 'Alien Vs Predator', 'Alien Vs Predator 2', 'Alien Resurrection' and 'Prometheus'.

While those first three movies are balls (although Resurrection is interesting when looked at as a proto-Firefly), Prometheus is top-tier Ridley Scott, alongside Alien, Blade Runner, Hannibal, The Counselor and the director's cut of Kingdom of Men.

I have to admit, as much as I enjoyed Prometheus and look forward to a follow up, if given the choice I'd rather get Alien5.

Kingdom Of Heaven (before anyone breaks out in hives).

I enjoyed Prometheus, it was visually stunning. Was it what I had hoped to see- no. I did not care for the whole Engineer angle and had really wanted to see a biomechanical race of large Space Jockeys designed for specific tasks instead of having it downsized into a small space suit.

Still, it is canon now and now Ridley Scott has several move films to tell his story before it synchs up with the first Alien movie. That film is still my favorite- nothing can diminish that for me.

Yep.
Still, it is canon now...
Canon has become irrelevant, and the larger it grows, unfortunately, the more it is despised because we would rather shoehorn into something that exists than create new ideas. The nextgen, as we have grown fond of doing, will simply reboot or alt timeline to their own pleasure.

io9: All These People are Probably Going to Die in Alien Covenant

I think the phrase that fits here is 'target-rich environment.'

Is there some kind of rights issue at play here?

Nothing so complicated, I'm afraid. Ridley flat-out hated both AvP films, thought they 'sullied the franchise', and reportedly made their de-canonization a condition for him returning to 20th Century Fox to do the Alien Prequel Trilogy. (AvP also short-circuited plans Ridley was making to direct his own Alien5 with James Cameron as writer/producer, so there's that.)

And the story begins...

Prologue: The Last Supper

... why Franco's character reportedly doesn't make it past the opening credits. Going into cryosleep when you're feeling nauseous sounds like a Really Bad Idea. :barf2:
