Production Quality Of Picard

Another thing that bugs me is for years Star Trek has been careful about showing buttons and zippers. Yeah it happened occasionally but they did a good job with it. In Picard everyone has buttons and old time zippers. They went through the trouble in tng showing how the uniforms had a invisible front zipper in the tunic. Ensign it takes her top tunic off and we see it has a invisible zipper. All the civilian clothes are designed the same way without zippers. It’s just something that Picard really fouled up. They all look like they stepped out of a 20th or 21st century McDonald’s.

If zippers is the worst complaint you have about PIC, then you must absolutely love the show.

Does something that was in your opening post count as "another thing"?

I was talking about the ensign ro episode where they showed how a zipperless and buttonless jacket worked. Pretty cool. It’s a solid piece of cloth and then you just open it and you can take it off like a jacket. There was no seam in the cloth that was noticeable it jus opened.really nice

Even watching the original series today it still feels like it's the future so lot because Roddenberry went out of his way to make sure that 1960s real world clothing and artifacts were in the show as little as possible. Not to say some showed up from time to time but it was much less than what we see in Picard. Let's admit it we won't be seeing set reconstructions of the Picard sets 50 years from now like we do with the TOS sets. Too much of 21st century aesthetics are in Picard and it really takes you out of the moment that we are supposedly seeing the future 370 from now. If someone from 1650 time traveled to our time we would either think that person was going to a costume party or he/she was a time traveled(lol). If a future Picard episode showed a person that traveled from 2020 to 2399 that person would fit right in clothing wise. The truth of the matter is that they decided to save money and not make original costumed to represent society in 2399 and therefore their costume people just went shopping for clothes and shoes. TOD fashion looks more futuristic then what we got on Picard.

Trek has always sucked where it comes to the clothing design, whether it was the bizarre and vapid civilian attire we see from time to time or the mostly dreadful and non functional uniforms Starfleet wear.

Buttons have been in use for well on 4,000 years and show no sign of going away because as a solution to a design question they are reliable, simple, adaptable and efficient.

Picard has plush production quality, far more so than the cardboard sets and pyjamas of yesteryear, not to mention people actually look good in the clothes they are wearing.

Not really seeing how PIC can be said to compare badly with TOS, TNG, VOY, or even the movies in that regard.

Beehive hairdoos and mini skirts scream "It's the 1960's". Most of the actors could walk off set and into the street with the hair they filmed with.
Oddly cut jumpsuits and leotards don't scream "the future" to me.

Lazy production values when all the clothes and shoes look like and most likely were purchased at a wal mart. Regardless if you think clothing in past shows sucked or not there was a attempt to change the styles and not make them look like 20th and 21st century contemporary clothing. As it stands in Picard someone can travel 379 years and they would have in exactly the same clothes that 24 century people care wearing. Go back 379 in our past and I doubt you would be able to argue that styles look similar and can easily blend in with today’s styles without anyone noticing. STP now looks like any cheap sci fi channel dystopian future that’s takes place 50 to 80 years in the future. Terrible.

I can't see them "blending in" where I live...

More seriously I feel like you are mistaking "ridiculous" for "futuristic", which is what I'm suggesting Trek has been guilty of for a long time and you are defending.

I have clothes that probably would pass a cursory glance in another time frame (suede jackets, cloth pants) and see no reason why they would look any more out of place 300 years into the future. We aren't on a Starfleet ship any more, we aren't on the fringes of known space or meeting aliens with established cultures and customs.

We are mostly meeting civilians who live close to (or on) Earth and want to look good by something like our own standards. By that measure Picard's combos are far better than the jumpsuits he was wearing throughout TNG IMHO.

By contrast:

Seems to me Picard looks every bit as "real world" in both cases (I actually have outfits that look not dissimilar). In the Wesley picture I just see a young man in a jumper flirting with a girl in a summer top much like those girls are wearing as they walk down my street right now. Nothing to indicate "far future"

Constantly repeating the same stupid shit will not make it any more true than the first time you said it. Really dude, if you want to hate the show, fine. Hate it all you want. But don’t feel the need to just make up some esoteric reason to hate it that you clearly aren’t even serious about yourself.

By contrast:
What's funny to me is how often the same earth style tones are used in the example pictures you provide. Similarly, the cut of Picard's jacket in Picard reminds me of Data's top from AGT.

Go 379 years in to our future and fashion will probably look nothing like what is portrayed as "futuristic" in current TV shows.

Also, almost all the outfits in Picard remind me of the Maquis.

Finally, it's not cheap.

If you don't like Picard that's just fine. But, it seems to me that not liking the show has translated in to "I have to find the reasons why I don't like the show." Why not just hate it and save the keyboard typing?

1. Because some people believe someone on the production team is out there, taking notes and preparing to alter the show's content based on their incessant griping.

2. Because drawing online fire is apparently fun for some.

That's a thing sometimes people forget, also. Fashions sometimes have their wild moments (the 14th and 18th centuries in the western world, for instance) or are part of some larger cultural identification (Scottish highland dress, the burqa, low rise jeans w/whale tail) but normally clothes just make sense. Look at the kaftan. It's basically the same thing that's been worn for centuries in the part of the world where it's the norm. It just makes sense. Even in the western world where clothes change more commonly, the men's suit of clothes hasn't really changed too fundamentally since Beau Brummell revolutionized fashion.

Sometimes things just work. The long uniform tunic (microdress) with proper leggings and boots would look like pretty normal mid/early European medieval attire with the right fabric, and honestly I could see that being the standard unisex duty uniform for everyone. I just think the skant looks silly with bare legs.

Here we see some of the lesser known officers who served aboard USS Discovery during the Klingon War.. no wait.. they're actually French Foreign Legion applicants in their candidate outfits. There are only so many ways to do practical clothes. I liked how picard handled it, also.

How many times can you beat this dead horse. Your opinion(?) was noted and roundly rejected on the first page. Now, you’re just arguing for argument’s sake. Please go away.
