Wow, 35% on Rottentomatoes. That's 10% lower than even the crappy third movie.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

I don't get some of the reviews, especially the ones complaining about the "over-complicated, convoluted storyline". I thought the storyline was very easy to understand and much more straightforward than any of the previous movies. I also liked it a lot more than parts 2 & 3.

I've seen it.
This is some type of knee-jerk reaction. It's far from a fair or accurate grade.

I quite agree, I found it more a case of the story lines simply not having much depth rather than being confusing. There was too little story for too many characters, but the story itself was very straight forward.

Nice review. It's a shame it still appears to be as bloated as ever, though.

I didnt find it bloated at all. I thought it was an excellent movie, good plot and moved at a good pace.

You know, the obsession with seeing what a movies "score" is on sites like Rotten tomatoes always confuses me. You either liked it or you didnt, the score wont validate your opinion and wont change your enjoyment level, and wont make the slightest difference to whether a sequel gets made to the film.

No, but it can be interesting to see how well-received a movie actually is. Not everything is about the box office.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

I don't care what the critics say. All the Pirate sequels have gotten mixed reviews, but I liked them anyway. I've been looking forward to seeing OST for a while and will decide if it is good or not.

This. I don't care what critics (or some guy on the street) think about a movie. All that matters is: was I entertained for two hours. The answer for OST is: yeah!
Personally I liked all the Pirate movies, do I think they are without flaws, no, but I had hours of fun watching them at the cinema and at home, what else do people want?

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

I just saw the movie. I loved it!

My grade is B+ or Above Average.

I've been a fan of the franchise ever since the first. The only reason I saw the first was because a someone told me to check it out, I never really had any interest in pirate movies. I ended up being a big fan of it. The movie was alot of fun and was carried entirely by Johnny Depp. The supporting cast was good too, Rush, Knightley and Bloom. Even the minor characters like Jack and Barbossa's pirate crew were very memorable.

I liked the two sequels too. I understood that they were trying to tell a more epic tale. They also went completely into the supernatural and created another classic character, Davy Jones, who looked amazing and had an awesome actor to voice him. The sequels weren't perfect. The sequels were a little long and I was starting to not like the whole Elizabeth and Will romance, which felt overblown at times. I thought Elizabeth had way more chemistry with Jack, and they completely ignored it in AWE.

On Stranger Tides opens in London after a brief scene in Spain. Jack of course makes another great entrance and ends up meeting King George II, who was hilarious. Richard Griffiths played the king as over the top as possible. The King wants the Fountain of Youth and wants Jack to led his crew there. Jack of course doesn't want that and what followed was a great escape scene on the streets of London.

As Jack tries to find a crew for a new adventure he ends up meeting a former girlfriend, Angelica. Angelica was great and played very well by Penelop Cruz. She was actually a woman that I could believe could stand up to Jack and she is of course hot. A problem that I had with Elizabeth was that it always felt like she was a little girl dressed up as pirate.

Eventually Jack is taken aboard Blackbeard's ship. I haven't seen Deadwood, but Ian McShane makes the role his own. He is very evil but also has a sense of humor. Soon Jack is forced to become part of the crew and the rest of the movie follows after that.

The movie didn't have a problem with being a little too long like DMC and AWE were. It was a much more simple story.

The only part that I didn't like was the silly romance between the missionary and the mermaid. It took up way too much time, but it had a nice ending at least. Syrena was hot and I guess the female audience would like Phillip.

Hans Zimmer was also a little lazy with the score. He recycled some of the music from the previous films a too much.

The entire escape scenes in London were very exciting. The place felt huge. I have to thank the director, Rob Marshall, for making the action something I could actually see, and not ruined by stupid shaky cam. He also did a good job making OST look consistent with the previous films, it is hard to tell that there was a change in directors.

We had the great sword fight between Jack and his imposter. The action was good but I wished that it hadn't been quite so dark though. I get that they were trying to hide the opponent's face. I thought it felt very much like Jack and Will's first sword fight in COTBP.

The standout scene of course was the one with the mermaids. They did a great job and picked two really beautiful actresses to be the main mermaids.

Jack was as great as aways and had plenty of funny lines. The audience laughed at them and seemed to really like the movie.

The movie is very fun. For the moment I'll say I liked OST more than DMC and AWE. That might change in the future.

I'm a bit surprised that it's Saturday night or Sunday for some and only 12 people have voted in the poll. Legit I saw it and voted posters. Just 12?

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

The 3-D is used good at times but again, it's not really needed for the whole film. I'm not a fan of Avatar but it did use the 3-D in nearly every frame and make the movie as a whole worthy of it's use. Curse you Avatar for this damn overused trend. I can think of about 3-4 scenes where, for about 2-3 seconds, the 3-D really jumps out at you.

I saw the movie in 2D. I made my choice after hearing all the negative reviews about 3D. These days, I absolutely refuse to see movies in 3D.

As for the third act I'll say this:
The ending was easy to predict but it was done good enough. Also, I had always thought Blackbeard's legend was that he had a peg leg, here he didn't. But Barbarosa does and he ends up with the Queen Ann and Blackbeards enchanted sword, thus will become the de-facto Blackbeard. Also it appears the Missionary(name escapes me) is going to become a Merman? Not sure if the fangs they have were meant to imply they possessed a vampiric nature but Serene did say she could save him from his seemingly mortaly inflicted wound.

Wow, that is a cool theory about Barbossa's ending. I didn't even realize what the writers were trying to do with that. I loved that he got Blackbeard's magic sword and ship at the end.

I think they intentionally left Philip's fate uncertain. If you want a happy ending for them imagine that the mermaid saved him or you can imagine that she made him her meal. They probably want to see if the two characters are popular or not with the audience first, and bring them back if they are.

As with the other Pirates movies stay through the credits for one last 10 second or so scene.

I really didn't like the scene after the credits. It wasn't as amusing as the scenes in the first two movies or as important as the scene in the third movie. I felt like I wasted 10 minutes waiting for it.:rommie:

There will probably be much more votes in the next few days. Several people in the pirates news thread commented that they were seeing it, but still haven't posted yet.

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I know very few people who are interested in this movie, and even they are not making it a priority. I'll check it out sometime on Netflix...maybe...

And I know many people that really want to see this movie. Actually the audience that I saw it with this Saturday was pretty large.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

My point is that I've heard very little buzz about this movie aside from a few people on this board, so it doesn't surprise me that a lot of people didn't rush out to see it opening weekend.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

I noticed that the films that tend to get the most talk around this board are sci fi movies and comic book movies. This movie has only been out a few days, give it some time.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

Okay...? Not sure how that's relevant. I'm saying that the few random people on this board are the ONLY people I've encountered with any kind of interest in this movie.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

^ What kind of movies are your friends normally interested in? Maybe they just don't like pirates films.

I had originally planned on seeing it this weekend, but have too much going on right now to squeeze in time for a movie at the theater. That said, I'm still psyched to see it and was pleased to see that Dream gave it a good review.

Thanks. It has been a while since I last posted such a long post.:rommie:

Not interested in Hangover II or Panda II next weekend, so I will probably see OST one more time before checking out X-men: First Class in two weeks.

^

Pirates and Harry Potter were my two big 'must-see' summer flicks, though the new Planet of the Apes film has me interested as well, as it's more connected to the original 1968 movie rather than the abomination that Burton gave us.
