I like Sapphire--but in a gin and tonic. For martinis, I definitely prefer vodka.

While I agree that if you're at a bar, and order a martini without being specific, I'd make you one with gin. But there is a huge market for vodka here in the states, and many people seem to prefer them that way. * shudders *

ETA: To add to that, back when I was a server, if someone ordered a martini without being specific, I'd upsell them on the gin and leave it to them to clarify if they wanted vodka.
