PICTURE POST!

Thanks for the comments on my pictures guys, I almost didn't post them! I talk myself out of posting pics all the time, so I'm glad people thought that one was funny.

I was actually torn between getting the T3i and the Sony NEX-5n. However my wife solved that by getting me the T3i for Christmas. I have only really used it for a few minutes, taking a few shots of my sons to just set up the camera and test it out. So far, I like it a lot. The lens that comes with it, in the kit is pretty good, its an 18-55 with Auto Focus and Stabilization. She also got me the 75-300mm but that is still in the box. I have started to read the enclosed manual, which there are two. I have never used a DSLR before and I have a lot to learn. The few shots I have taken are really nice, I like how quick it is. I haven't tested the video yet, but will in a few days.

I'm toying with the idea of getting the T3i. How do you like it so far?

A VHS player? You still use that?

I still have a VHS player, too. If you look back at one of the photos of my STAR WARS collection on page 451 you'll see a VCR sitting on top of one of my televisions. I don't use it that often anymore because I own three DVD players and will soon be getting a BluRay player as well, but I still own lots and lots of VHS cassettes from the '90s and early part of the last decade loaded with things like MST3K and DS9 episodes. I still like to watch them on occasion, even if the sound and picture quality is clunky compared to DVDs. I'm not one for throwing out a piece of equipment unless it no longer works, and even then I can find some way of turning it into a glorified paperweight or platform for something else. :D

The only thing me VCR is good for is to raise the telly to a comfortable level for me eyes when I'm using me old Atari. Or to hide fragile objects when me niece is over. Btw, I cut the power cord off it. It was in me way. :techman:

EDIT: Bloody hell! I just realized that I don't even have a DVD player. Went from VHS to HTPC to BD. I remember back in the day when people saw me telly. "You have a computer hooked up to your telly? That's just stupid. Why would your telly need a computer?"

yes, i do use the VCR, like Eddie, it functions and i still have a lot of tapes so i use it. we don't have any kind of Tivo or DVR thingy in my house. we have 3 VCRs and use them.

If you take good care of a VCR it will last. The one you see in one of my collection photographs is about eleven years old and I used to use it incessantly before I got my first DVD player. That thing's been through the ringer but still works well, in part because I run a cleaning tape through it on occasion, keep it dusted and wiped clean and no longer play tapes on a constant, one-after-the-other basis. When I do watch something I don't pop in two or three more tapes after the first is over, thus reducing stress and strain on the heads and other working parts. And I have a separate VHS rewinder so I don't need to risk damage to the VCR by constantly rewinding tapes inside it.

If you watch what you're doing and are lucky your electronics---no matter how obsolete or nearly so---can last. I have a big stereo system from the early 90s that still works like it's practically brand new. Call it frugality, but growing up I was always told to take good care of my electronic playthings because we were on a budget and there was no guarantee my parents could replace something for me if I busted it or let it fall into disrepair. :)

Yep. I have a VCR as well. Aside from some Star Trek videos ("Mind Meld", for example), I also have family videos and the deluxe VHS edition of Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Said VCR is about 6 years old to me, but I bought it used.

I am just the opposite, techwise. I get rid of everything I don't use A LOT. I am an active minimalist. I have not had a VCR in years. Also no CD player (except in my car; but I am working on replacing its CD headunit with one that is iPod-only), and no CDs - I went all-iTunes years ago. At home, I play music from my computer and also from an AppleTV. Sounds just fine to me.

If it's not on Netflix Instant or on Blu-Ray/DVD, I don't watch it. I haven't owned/used a VCR in at least 10 years.

I don't plan on buying any more DVDs either.

Blu-Rays, yes. The AppleTV maxes out at 720p so that's why I don't rely on it for all my HD stuff. Once it goes 1080p, that'll change things.
