How is that one more "overdesigned" than other ships of that time?

If that's what you call goading, I'm not impressed.I just got a text from my sister who watched it saying that she was confused as to why Picard was doing in the Discovery era. She didn’t finish season 2 and wanted to know if something important happened at the end.
Just saw the short. Very little story but it was beautifully done. So much so that I had to watch it again. I'd love to have the song they played.

It'll be 15 years from then to the start of PIC...so they should be hitting their 20's by then if they've lived that long.
I liked the inclusion of the song. Fits with the Trek tone. And I see that almost no one is complaining about it. Remember Faith of the Heart?

The young Starfleet officer featured in this 'Picard' trailer (at 2:12) look like an adult Kima to me. What do you think?
I think you might've linked to the wrong video. The woman at the 2:12-mark doesn't look like she's in her 20s, and she's a Vulcan. Tamlyn Tomita was born in 1966.

I love the song, just not that version or it’s use here.
It was a deliberate choice. The Drydock had 3 ships in it - one was used in an episode of ST: D and the "Trouble With Edward" Short Trek, and the other two were what looked like 23c era primary Hulls, with two Nacelles below on 23c style pylons with a cross brace.
I'm sure (much like the change in the ship design aesthetic from the original TOS 23c they consciously did for ST: D - I'm certain you can expect the same for STP. They have a #D Hologram of a Galaxy Class in one of the promos, but I daresay that's probably the only thing you'll see of the old TNG 24c ship design aesthetic.
They don't want to repeat what was done 33+ years ago (including all the left over ILM filming models of the Oberth, Miranda, and Excelsior TOS feature film models that were used to save money on the first 3 seasons of TNG.
This group wants 'fresh/new/exciting/current' (read 2020) takes on Star Trek inside and out. They are making a clear statement (with Patrick Stewart's blessing I'm sure) that this is NOT TNG Redux.
Take it from a TOS fan...yeah, it's annoying when they take something you grew up with and enjoyed and change it just because some digital VFX artist wants to make it 'modern' production wise.
There's plenty of "Beta Cannon" ships that already have models made.
They could've grabbed one of those and stuck it in dry dock.

CBS already has a CGI model of the Luna. it's what was used to make the model for Eaglemoss.
