Like the rest of the non-US world I´ll have to wait until tomorrow to watch it. Does it have an opening theme? What´s it like?

It does. It's in the same vein as Discovery's but very different in execution. It's more colorful. There's also more to the visuals, and they're more varied. The music fits the show.

How do I put this? This is Star Trek as a prestige drama. Even if you don't like Discovery, I still recommend Picard as these two shows are very different from each other.

Let me get one question out of the way: which one do I like better so far Discovery or Picard? I like them both for very different reasons. But Picard is most definitely in a class of its own. Give it a chance. To certain others I want to say: I mean give it a serious chance, not one where you're watching but you already made up your mind. Actually give it a chance. If you do, you won't be disappointed.

I think that just like JJ’s Trek, Discovery has always had a schizophrenic personality. On the one hand, it was meant to appeal to TOS fans and milk the Kirk, Spock, etc. names. On the other, it was supposed to draw new blood in, appealing to DC and Marvel audiences. I think the stories reflect that. They’re more simplistic—main hero vs. big bad villain—and only go into moral and philosophical issues in passing. TNG (the movies notwithstanding) was always different, and I think PIC is definitely playing more to its slower, more contemplative style. I think at the end of the day, it’s about a preference of what kind of story you like, and for many, what kind of Trek you grew up with. Since 2009, TNG “kids” have grown up and become middle-aged (and more importantly, many have steady jobs), so it makes sense CBS is targeting them now. For my part, Discovery never grabbed me, but I love what I’m seeing from Picard so far. Can’t wait to rewatch this episode, and can’t wait for the next one.

God they’ve turned Starfleet into America. Is Trump’s descendant in charge?
It was pretty good. I’m glad they didn’t drag that secret of Dahj out. It was pretty obvious a few minutes in.
The new Romulan ships are okay but rather generic looking. I did like the subtle Romulan theme in the music though.
I noticed they upped the death count of Mars to 93,000. That’s higher but no 7 million. No mention that Spock also disappeared during the nova. You’d think that would have been mentioned.

That's a fair assessment.

You were doing so well up until this point. I may be 40 but I think of myself as a young 40. It's really more like I'm thirty-ten. I'm not ready to call myself middle-aged yet. I hope to not call myself "middle-aged" for a long time. ;)

For my part, Discovery never grabbed me, but I love what I’m seeing from Picard so far. Can’t wait to rewatch this episode, and can’t wait for the next one.

Agree to disagree about Discovery... but I agree to agree with you about Picard 100%.

Beautiful cinematography. It may be the 130am delierium but I really enjoyed it and look forward to the rest of the season. I’ll have to rewatch it after work on the tv instead of iPad I think.

Very glad it this has completely different feel than discovery which is hot garbage.

The theme was more understated than Discovery. I only listened once, but it didn't seem to have a strong hook to it.

Not bad. I'm not big on mysteries though and this was a setting the scene show to boot.

Obviously I like seeing Romulans on Trek. Hopefully they won't ALL be evil or cardboard villains.

I suppose it's the Federation that'll be the villain. I know it's an "imitate the times we're in" type show, but I hope they don't layer it on too thickly. I watch TV and movies to escape that stuff.

Did I mention I liked the Romulans?

I did laugh at the obvious stunt double for when he had to run. You’d think in this day and age they could do that better.

The music sucked, frankly. The only good bits were the parts that aped Goldsmith. Really the one blemish. But it's still better than McCharthaway horns.

When has it not been?
I just mean with the story of Starfleet pulling out. America did something similar recently with the Kurds.

Oh please, Garth. With turning 60 a few years ago, I slid into the "old" category. The mirror and the body say "no shit," but the brain still isn't quite accepting of that.

Stewart is def older this time. He's finally seeming to age IRL too. I was reading somewhere the Jean-Luc character is supposed to be 92 in this show. I wonder if that's accurate.

I thought it was going to be a 2 hour premiere...why is CBS no longer doing that? Anyways, besides that, wasn't a bad premiere at all...VERY beautiful cinematography. Picard is definitely different in this day and age, likely dealing with Irumodic Syndrome, or is treating it with meds etc. Dahj's storyline is interesting, although I kinda am predicting what might happen by seasons end.

Goodness, what to say, so much to take in. as people have said, beautiful cinematography. Looks to be clearly a long format TV show developed over season rather than older series episodic. I had to adjust to Sir Patrick acting - he's clearly an elderly man and I was not always enthused. Additionally they should probably have put a bit more action in first episode or made it feature length to do so. I'll definitely keep watching.
