But all of that doesn't matter since the Kelvin movies are its own thing. We can appreciate them for what they are, but they have little to do with Picard or the Trek we know.

A great beginning. It felt like TNG without acrually being it, if that makes sense. Probably a big reason for that is Sir Patrick Stewart.

Seeing Data again, the reason I became I scifi fan, brought a tear to my eye. I knew that was a dream from scratch because that uniform did not exist until after the Enterprise-D was destroyed. I'm not sure if it's been mentioned before, but I think the reason Data looks different here, other than the reality of Brent Spiner's age, is that we only see him in Picard's dreams. Dreams can often distort a person we know a little bit, so I fully accept this as a natural thing. I mention this because I know other people have said Data looks odd or not quite right in promos. I think it works perfectly, given the context.

I loved seeing all those easter eggs in the Archive. The models of the Stargazer and the Enterprise-E, the bat'leth, the 'Captain Picard Day' banner... it was a trip down memory lane.

The interview... I didn't like her. She just kept attacking Picard, without even letting him finish his sentences half the time. People like her are exactly why I don't like reporters. But I loved his arguments... this man was and is a solid, moral person. If more humans in the 21st century can have even half his moral fortitude, our species just might survive to GET to the 24th century.

I have to say I did guess a LOT of things in this episode before they were revealed. It's not a fault of the writers, I think it's more my knowledge of STAR TREK and one other key thing... they weren't trying to be complicated. I enjoy having to figure out things and plots, but these days, there are so many twists and 'gotcha' moments in stories that it's sometimes a chore to follow, rather than being fun. It's too much. Simpler, to the point stories with character focus are FAR better as an option than a plot with 20 twists out of nowhere. I think that's the big difference between PICARD and DISCOVERY, and while DISCOVERY has grown on me, I still find it a little harder to keep up with their pace than other STAR TREK series.

This will likely be answered during the season, but I wonder where did all those 'rogue synths' come from? They were clearly in wide use, but how did it get to that point so quickly? We never really saw evidence of that during the TNG movie era, but to be fair, we didn't see a LOT other than the situation they were in. And my other question is WHY did they attack Mars? Did they have a big issue with Starfleet, since Utopia Planetia is a MAJOR shipyard for them? Could they have had their programming hijacked by a group and made them destroy the shipyards just for the reaction of banning synthetics?

I am definitely excited for the season, and can't wait to see how it unfolds!

So no retcon or contradiction then, just clarity.

Spock specifies that the event is 129 years sharp in the future of the moment Pine's Jim Kirk is experiencing. 129 years before 2389 would be 2260, or perhaps 2259 or 2261, dependin'. Yet the main body of the movie is traditionally placed at 2258.

No real problem there. Just like 129 years before 2389 can be 2259, 25 years after 2233 can also be 2259. The timing cues in the movie were never explicit, and indeed the only one we got was that "25 years" had passed between the opening scenes and the main action. Could be a round figure right there. But as said, it need not be.

Agreed.

I even have a thought as to why Spock was not mentioned. Since the Abramsverse happens in an alternate reality/timeline, the Ambassador Spock that arrived there could very well be a DIFFERENT Spock than our universe Spock. A lot of things happened the same for both universes, but subtle things may be different. Might also explain why the supernova was explained in a simpler way here.

PICARD S1E1

No spoilers:

It looks great, every shot is beautiful, no annoying camera movements or fast cuts. Many visual and acoustic references to previous shows. A much more satisfying and less hectic approach compared to Discovery.

Heavy Spoilers:

The intro is kinda interesting, but also underwhelming. Parts are like James Bond intros, but the music seems generic with no clear direction or theme tune. The D is pretty, it's nice to see her again after such a long time. The 10 Forward windows seen from outside don't match those seen from inside XD. Data's FC uniform is nice to see (my favorite design). Data himself looks much better than in the trailers, more skin texture. The Ferengi seem to be active in Boston. We see a Trill, and learn more about what happened since Nemesis. 10000 warp-capable ferries were constructed to relocate 900 million Romulans before their planets are destroyed by the supernova. Picard compares the rescue plan to Dunkirk. The journalist talks about the Romulan sun, so it could have been the Romulan home system itself that was hit first. Rogue synths attacked Mars and destroyed the rescue fleet and the Utopia Planitia shipyards. 92000 died, and Mars is still burning years later. Following the attack, all synthetic lifeforms were banned, the rescue plan was abandoned, and Picard resigned in protest. We see a nice shot of the Golden Gate Bridge, but it looks like people will have to walk across it under a roof of solar panels (as in Discovery). They have great models of the Stargazer, Daqtagh, betleH, Cousteau, Enterprise D and E in the Starfleet Archives. Good to see they still use Okuda-style LCARS with just a little more detail. Shuttles seem to be shortened Disco shuttles. Satellite pictures of the bay area seem to be from today, not the 24th century. Picard thinks that Dahj, who's chased by mysterious agents, is a synth that looks perfectly human and contains Data's "essence", making her his daughter. B4 is in a drawer at the Daystrom Institute. He never worked well and couldn't handle Data's copied memories, most of which were lost. Bruce Maddox and his team built the synths that then attacked Mars, and they are now restricted to theoretical research after building new synths was banned by galactic treaty. Maddox disappeared after the ban. Fractal neuronic cloning could have reconstituted Data's positronic net from a single neuron. It turns out all synths, or maybe only the "perfect" synths, are created in pairs. Dahj's sister works in a very impressive Borg cube that we see at the end with a clear reference to TOS music! The rescue fleet looks like new ships, no more Magee. The TOS Bird of Prey has more detail than in the trailers.

Not really fussed if it matches the JJVerse movies. Maybe Spock didn’t disappear here and is still alive.
I hope there is more to the Picard story. To me if Picard was in that situation, he would have pulled a Kirk and just disobeyed Starfleet. I imagine there would be many other captains as well who would follow him and help out.

„What an amazing episode! Like the best of both worlds from TWOK and All good things. Star Trek: Picard just raised the bar in terms of TV science fiction for years to come. This show will change your life and most probably bring peace to the middle east.
Oh, and they nailed the CGI on Brent Spiner, he looks like his old self again, forget the bloated Monchhichi„

Nice, my fake review from a few weeks ago is still valid...
Beautiful first episode. Easily the best Star Trek since TNG

I imagine there would be many other captains as well who would follow him and help out.

But them doing so would probably not make a difference. Perhaps Picard personally hauled out those domesticated Romulans of his, but he and his fifty best buddies still would have left billions behind.

So Bruce Maddox is going to show up, right? I wonder if it will be the same actor.
I hope so! That would be insanely cool.

Sorry if I'm repeating a point, but I just noticed on re-watch in the opening that they used the Discovery font for "Star Trek" instead of the classic font we've seen in promos. "Picard" is still the same.
Yes, maybe they decided that all CBSAA Trek is supposed to have the same font. I didn't like that they used the TOS font, so maybe it's a little better that they used the updated version from Disco.

So it’s now just the Romulus sun that went nova, not Hobus. They’ve simplified things.
The journalist speaks of a Romulan sun, but all the stars in the Empire could be called that. All the stars in the Klingon Empire are also Klingon suns, right?

Like the rest of the non-US world I´ll have to wait until tomorrow to watch it. Does it have an opening theme? What´s it like?
I was disappointed. Never thought I'd say this, but all previous themes, including Disco, have more of a tune and direction than this one. I had the impression the composer just didn't know where to go with his notes.

Did they show a preview for the next episode?
One for the whole season, with nice little updates to the trailers.

It was great seeing three different kinds of Romulans in this episode: TOS and TOS Movie-style, TNG-style and J.J.-style. This is how they should treat the Klingons in DSC. Show us one of every kind from every era of the franchise.

But them doing so would probably not make a difference. Perhaps Picard personally hauled out those domesticated Romulans of his, but he and his fifty best buddies still would have left billions behind.

Saving a few million is still something. Just feels out of character.

I don't think we got any Moe Howard haircut Romulans did we?

Jason

Not in this episode, but on the planet with the Romulan refugee settlement there are Romulans with both TNG brow ridges and haircuts.

Wow! I'm speechless! I need to re watch it again. Incredible:drool: Greatest first episode of Trek since forever.
Since Enterprise I would say.

surprised the interviewer hasn’t seen Dunkirk. It’s a good movie.
