Paramount/JJ trying another Trek movie (that will probably never get made).

Lying on an investors call is fraud. Companies will bend the truth, they'll present best case scenarios (like this movie having a 2023 release), but easily verifiable outright lies that would require co-operation of dozens (at least) of people both inside and outside the company aren't happening. At least, not unless they're really desperate, and then they'd lie to make the project seem further along, not less.

Usually before formal negotiations occur (usually) the studio will ask the big names if they have interest. I would assume that at least for Pine and Soldana that they have asked agents or the actors themselves if they are interested and then asked about any open windows they have. After that then the real talks start.

And of course even after all signed, it still doesn't mean a film ill be made.

The earnings call transcript has not been released yet.
Until then it's hard to assess what was actually said.

Variety writes:
Paramount is planning to enter negotiations for “Star Trek” stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg to return to the Enterprise for their fourth tour of duty in the venerable sci-fi franchise.

Was "planning to enter negotiations" actually said or is this Variety's editorial?

Check the critics scores and user scores on any rating site you want, IMDb, Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes etc. and Star Trek '09 and Into Darkness are both in the top 5 Trek movies.

(PS. let me know if I've missed something and I'm wrong about this).

Minus some boneheaded choices, STID was a very good movie.

ST09 singlehandedly rebooted trek and is in no small part the reason why we have so many TV shows now.

Beyond was super fun and seemed to take many of the fan critiques to heart.

Also, these are big stars who can carry a tentpole.

Finally, kelvinverse won't step on any of the TV stuff, fewer barriers to entry for casual fans

Makes total sense

You missed that "Into Darkness" was barely profitable. Interest declined.
And then "Beyond" lost money:

Since they announced it on an investor's call with none of the cast signed and no announced writer or director I wouldn't hold my breath. At least not for the proposed 2023 release date.
definitely not happening in 2023. 2024 or 25? Maybe!

So what number director is this? 5 or 6? Its like everytime they make this announcement, they say they got directors and writers and the cast ready to film, then a few days later that's NOT the case. Oh well, not really going to hold my breath, and if they REALLY wanted to make more Kelvin Trek, they could do so on the small screen.

I’m afraid that using the original cast would be too expensive for the small screen. Movies with a different cast set in the kelvinverse sure (but why?).

They need someone to serve as a Harve Bennett for the next film, someone who call pull a Star Trek II and help develop a film that:
1. Can be done on a lower budget but without feeling cheaper.
2. Move the characters in new directions
3. Open things up possible future films.

I am glad they are sticking with the established cast and format. It means no origin story, no nostalgia, no passing the torch. Just a good science fiction story. Hopefully.

And because this cast has already saved the Earth from destruction, already defeated multiple villains obsessed with revenge, and already destroyed the Enterprise, they can now eschew those tired tropes. Hopefully.

The key thing that makes the Kelvin Universe great is the characters. Sure, the plots of the past films have been torturous, but the characters are more or less intact and respectfully treated. I enjoy watching Pine and Saldana and the rest perform their versions of the classic characters. Like, I will never enjoy watching Christian Haydensen’s version of Darth Vader, no matter the other strengths and weaknesses of the movies he is in.

good point.

Wouldn’t count on it.

well, apart from the exaggeratedly cocky Kirk, the very emotional Spock, the comic relief Scott and the boy wonder Chekhov sure…

They were all better by Beyond, if I recall correctly. I only saw it once, and it has been a while. (Not that Chekov matters anymore.)

Even in 2009 I thought they were just exaggerated, disproportional, but not necessarily wrong. Spock IS emotional AF in the show, it’s just that it only peeks through rarely (and is all the more impactful for that).

Completely agree. Kirk's cockiness makes sense, especially in light of his larger arc of living in his dad's shadow as a heroic figure. Spock is a little less so with his relationship with Uhura, but certainly not out of place. Spock was very emotional in his first appearances, and Nimoy played him as a person who was constantly trying to keep a lid on his emotions, so that tracks. Scotty is really the only one I didn't care for.
