Paramount/JJ trying another Trek movie (that will probably never get made).

I thought both Trials and Flashback were fun enough episodes. Flashback could have been more, and was rather confusing at times with continuity but it's a brain bug so I give it a pass.

But, even if those were not anniversary things they would still be fun. I think people put too much weight on anniversaries. Beyond is a fine movie, appropriately reflective at times, and fun adventure for the rest.
Flashback would have been helped if the writers of the episode had actually paid attention to Star Trek 6 (assuming they bothered to watch the entire film). It didn't help that you didn't even see Sulu and the Excelsior for the first 25 or so minutes of the episode.

Plus the way it was executed it was basically a holodeck episode as it was all in Tuvok's mind. And given all the continuity errors that made the episode very different from the corresponding events in the film, I have to say Vulcans have extremely poor memory; or Tuvok had some sort of mental issues. ;)

At this point, I'll believe it when I see it. A lot of factors can go awry for any Hollywood project and kill it.

So if it happens, great. But I'm not holding my breath.

Feels like we're back in the 1970s with all the false starts and stops with a Star Trek feature.

I think that's a good idea since it seemed the ALL CBS + Trek are having some success, and also DISCO has already paved the way to bring something further from their so-called future. Paramount has a rich history in promoting their TV series into motion pictures, why should they stop now? Also, they're sets already built and I think if they wanted to bring some sort of Marvel Cinematic U thing by having pulling an Infinity War/End Game movie, they have the characters and the quality production value is set and up and running. This seems like the logical way to go, and lets not forget the canvas is large enough or it can be large enough to bring forth Quinto and the JJ cast back as well to add some gravitas to whatever they'd like to do. Upgrade DISCO, PICARD, PIKE SHOW and make movies.

So is this actually happening this time? Or is this just going to end up like all the other attempts?

Since they announced it on an investor's call with none of the cast signed and no announced writer or director I wouldn't hold my breath. At least not for the proposed 2023 release date.

While it’s not anything resembling a guarantee that it’s actually going to move forward this time, according to the report linked above, for what it’s worth, there are writers/a director attached.

Variety said:
Abrams is producing the new, as-yet-untitled film through Bad Robot, with Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) directing from a screenplay by Josh Friedman (“Avatar 2”) and Cameron Squires (“WandaVision”) based on a earlier draft by Lindsey Beer (“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”).

I look forward to when there are screencaps and long-time cynics say, "No way! They're fake! They were staged! It's a trick!" ;)

Just kidding. But it looks like they've solved whatever was stopping them before. How close they're keeping everything to the vest this time looks like a good sign. And the fact that the initial script for this version has gone to the revision stage instead of being rejected. And they've signed all the surviving cast back.

This is going forward.

Fair enough, the article I read did not list any director or writers, I will edit my post

They haven't signed the surviving cast back. They haven't even opened negotiations with them. They just said they're planning to open negotiations with them.

It sounds a bit like fluff talk to me, they're probably deep into negotiations if they aren't close to closing a deal already. This was a very public, official announcement for the fourth movie. And if, for some reason, they can't get the cast to return then it's fine because they had only just "planned to open negotiations".

It was an investors call. They are not outright lying to investors to downplay how far they are in negotiations.
