Opinions about Trip

My purpose behind this thread was to talk about Trip and why I like him and don't like his development.

Anyone dying to talk about T/T'P: Opinions about Trip and T'Pol.

Iceb, I'm not sure it is symmetry that Trip got a love interest. I mean, why is it important? If there were going to follow TOS, they'd have "babe of the week." I think really the writers began to alienate those who don't want to see romance or didn't like the one we were given.

I think it hurt his character.

I think babe of the week is a bit silly and does not allow real character growth. Back in the sixties it was the sexual revolution and maybe it was seen as an idea of freedom. I'm old enough to remember ;)
I was watching The Final Frontier some days ago and what I saw was three old men, very close to each other and very lonely at the same time. I want a better life for Trip, T'Pol, even Archer and everybody else.

That is true but cannot be avoided, not everybody can be happy.

It's understandable that a discussion of Trip would lead to mention of T'Pol and their relationship, and how they impact on Trip. But when you start discussing T'Pol and her motivations, and only mention Trip in passing, you're talking more "T'Pol and "relationship" than "Trip."

Sure, a bit of thread drift is to be expected. But after you've made your point, you can help get things back on topic yourself, either by tying your point to Trip, or simply by contributing an opinion about Trip. That way, this thread will continue to move forward.

And Iceb, talking about Archer's goals in this thread is off-topic. If anything, you're edging too close to A/T'P vs T/T'P, and everyone has already been cautioned not to go there in this thread.

If you wish to discuss the Trip/T'Pol relationship, as opposed to Trip, there are other threads to do that.

I disagree. For example, I seriously disliked Kira/Odo, but I didn't feel alienated. I also seriously disliked Seven/Chakotay (I actually rooted for Seven & Harry), and I still didn't feel alienated.

Why did you feel alienated?

I'm really sorry, I probably did not express myself well. :alienblush: It was just a thought of mine about how the creators of the show might have seen the symmetry of the three basic characters. Besides, I am T/T'P all the way.

Nice thought. Just not exactly the place to express it. But you knew that. So let's press on.

Commodore64, May I ask if you are against all relatinships or just this one of Trip/T-Pol.

Perhaps you might like a Hoshi/Reed or Hoshi/ Travis or even a Trip/Hosi.

I seem to get the feeling that it is the trip/T-Pol relationsip you dislike rather than a relationship in the series.

I am probably wrong but that is the sense I get from your posts.

You claim to like Trip. However you don't seem to like T-Pol. so maybe you are offended by the Trip/T-Pol romance?

If I am off base please say so and you will get my sincere apologies.

This whole thing--directing specific questions to a poster--is inappropriate here, Penguin. Plus, it concerns a contentious topic, which is NOT THE SUBJECT OF THIS THREAD. How many times do I have to say it before I start handing out warnings?

These threads are for discussion of the topic, not the posters. If you want to start a personal conversation with a poster and ignore the rest of the community, take it to PM. If you want to discuss an off-topic subject, kindly take the discussion where it belongs.

ENOUGH of this.

I felt that trip was unbalanced by all his experiences. He was certainly the most competent member of the crew, but serving with misfits demoralized him. He also was pregnant and lost the baby, brain dead, simulated and had a child die under mysterious circumstances.

Dr. G is that you? Stevie?

GB, I think it's safe to say: you love Trip and the pining he had for T'Pol and to you that makes him a fascinating character. I can't think of more ways I disagree with that statement, other than I liked Trip.
I think that through the romance storyline, they managed to grow Trip into a much more mature, well rounded, and versatile, character (same for T'Pol, IMO). I think the romance eventually was good for both characters. Had they not done it that way, although I would still likely have liked the romance, I don't think I'de feel the same way about it. If in the romance, they'd continued to write Trip as immature and buffoonish, like in seasons 1 and 2, the romance storyline would certainly not have appealed to me as much.

The credit for the change in the romance and Trip's character vis-a-vis the romance, definitely goes to Manny and his crew.

Give Connor some credit as well. He mentioned in an interview that he had to fight B&B to allow Trip to grow as a character.

^ I think the character took a major backslide and that Coto shouldn't be congratulated at all.

I do believe that Star Trek was f*cked when it came to allowing actors to act their characters. A great example, Trinneer had picked an accent. Why not go to him and say, "Hey, where do you think that accent is from?" Or maybe involve the actors in scripts and get feedback. My understanding from someone who worked on graphics is that they had a chain of command. For example. Bakula went to TPTB very seldomly and when he did, he had to go to the top rather than just work it out with the director and writer. Makes no sense.

I don't think Trinneer is a stupendous actor, but think the character would be a lot better off if Trinneer was allowed more control over his own character.

i think that is because the actors had no controll on their character that there were some problems. exemple : in the commentary on "similitude", manny said that scott had to fight with B&B to let his bearb grew up (to show how his mission was hard and all). and when you heard jolene and connor, who had to fight to let grow up their characters, i can understand why anthony and linda was unexploited. connor had to fight to not appeared on his underwear anymore (i don't think jinx and other girls was ok with that ;))

to sum up, i think actors have to propose some things and to be heard. when they are heard, then that give episodes like "similitude". because there was an comprehension between the actors and the director levar burton.

and we have all seen what that give unilateral decisions (precious cargo, TATV...)
