Ontario Provincial Politics

Ford has now walked back his "slam dunk" to open up the greenbelt for development.

Oh dear, my family lives in the greenbelt area, at least whenever I go visit them I see signs saying I'm now entering the greenbelt, though I really don't understand what it means. Oh but I do so hope someone's planning to make better roads around Hamilton area? I find driving so very truly dreadful, it's like your population has more than doubled since I moved away but your roads just haven't been expanded to keep up and now it's such a nightmare. One thing you can say about Americans is they know how to build roads, lol.

I have so many family and friends in Ontario who tell me all the time what hardships they're having with housing. My sister and her family cannot afford a house, and my friend from high school and her family are still renting also, even though she has a good job, she is just so very frustrated. I so wish something could be done to ease the housing pain for all the wonderful people in southwest Ontario.

We learned something important this week about Doug Ford, the man who would be premier.

We learned that he makes stuff up on the fly and is willing to say things to pander to whatever audience he’s talking to.

lol Sorry, but we learned that roughly two weeks ago when he was in Norhern Ontario. Or in our case, he didn't even try. What a nut.

Housing affordability is a major issue though according to one writer to the Toronto Star is a problem with the developers not the government. Part of the problem seems to be people who purchase multiple properties and use them as investments waiting for the price to go up though I'm not sure Toronto has the same issue as Vancouver where the investors (frequently foreign nationals) would simply let the property sit idle.

This reduces supply which leads to prices going sky high (compounded by people who are so desperate to buy they get into bidding wars and pay well above market value - a recipe for disaster) but then cause blow back elsehwere. People (particularly retirees) are selling out of toronto and getting $1mil+ prices then buying places within a hour or two's drive (Oshawa, Lindsay, Peterborough for example) where prices are a lot lower, buy a new property and have 100s of $1000s left in the bank.

But that means hardluck for people in those places because all of sudden prices have gone up. In my neck of the woods there's a shortage of supply in house stock in the past 12 months average house prices have jumped $50-60K - from the mid $300k to just over 400k. Flow on impact is rental properties are scarce as hens teeth and while rents are lower that Toronto, for a city of this size (bit over 80K) are high with a 2 bedroom apartment at 800 - 900sq feet setting you back over $1000 plus heat n hydro (electricity) which is a big strain when wages for the most part are not exactly stellar here.

Toronto is even worse and is compounded by building owners and developers using legal loop holes to evict tenants saying they need to do major renovations, spend a few dollars doing the place up and then re-let the apartment at twice the price (you can't increase rent by more than 3% unless you do major renovations. Things could get even worse - if the Liberal ads are correct, ford wants to do away with rent control which would serious bend people over and screw them without out lube.

Speaking of ford there's another stench coming out of pre-selections on his watch. When MPP Michael Harris wound up in hot water over some less than appropriate texts the party committee decide they weren't that serious (more flirtatious then anything major) and didn't' recommend his dumping. However ford became involved and Harris was dumped to be replaced by mike harris jr (son of the former premier whom ford appointed as the candidate). Harris had lost his pre-selection bid in the neighbouring riding.

Something definitely rotten in Denmark there.

There are a lot of properties available in Northern Ontario. Problem is, there's an issue with a lack of transportation which affects the general willingness of people wanting to settle there. And that's something we've had trouble with overall, ie attracting people to the region.

hey dougie boy - you pull stunts like taking a couple of questions then go back into your office and leave some-one else to explain your brainfarts of course the media is gonna give you a hard time.

I won't be the least bit suprised if doug the thug is a one term wonder because like trump he doesn't really understand what the job is going to entail.

Question time from Queens Park will be quite interesting

^ Wow, I wouldn't have anticipated Ford doing that.

That will probably help him retain some Blue Liberal votes... but I wonder now if there will be any kind of voting backlash with the SoCons? If I recall correctly, they weren't too happy when Brown rejected their ideology, after using them to win the leadership. Of course, it's not like the SoCons are suddenly going to vote Liberal or NDP... but they could possibly choose not to vote at all.

Speaking of Tories, I'm not sure how it is anywhere else, but during the last few elections, it seems the local PC candidates have hardly tried getting their names out there until the very last minute. Our local PC candidate literally just had their local office pop up around the corner from me, and it's someone we hardly know as a candidate. You'd think there would be some effort in branding, and people wonder why the PC are so unpopular in this region.

Well their phone calls are starting to get up people's noses already though the party has denied responsiblity.

Had a call to day that was from a Sudbury number who said they were calling on behalf of the local PC candidate (couldn't even give his name). Looked up the number it does have a shady history. At first I wonder if it was coming from a home number because I heard a dog bark but then it was possible the caller was a remote agent for call centre (they connect to the call centre via combination VPN and VOIP).

Seems legit...

Yeah, if they can't even give the local candidate name, certainly seems shady, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear it's a scam taking advantage of the voting cycle.

No, but if it cuts into the Conservative vote it'll be worth it.

The first of three provincial debates is tonight. The one tonight will be held in Toronto and will be exclusively about issues relating to Toronto, so expect lots of Subways, Subways,Subways talk.

A poll released today shows the NDP with their highest support since July 2015 (during the Alberta election bump) with 40% OPC, 30% NDP, 20% LIB. If Horwath does well tonight she might be able to start her own Orange Wave in Ontario. The stakes are high, folks!

And from what I heard, she did very well. So, here's hoping. My region is interesting as every party is really paying attention to it ever since the by-election trial as anything could happen here. They're all promising a boat load of things hoping to sway one's opinion as the region is highly contested, and during the last election we did end up flipping to the NDP before Wynn wrested it back for the Liberals.

So, Tanya Granic Allen has penned a piece in the National Post to defend herself. She claims she has been "slandered", and claims that the accusation that she is against the dignity and rights of LGBT+ people is "a lie".

Proceeds to claim that her "comment of sickened disbelief was not aimed at gay marriage per se" (emphasis mine), calls the sex-ed curriculum "anti-family" and "radical", refers to same-sex marriage as a "doctrine", and calls the people who brought marriage equality to Croatia "oppressors".

Yeah, totally not homophobic.
