Now what for the franchise?

When SYFY decides on the fate of SGU and most likely cancels it, what will happen to the franchise? We will have the 3rd show running that was incomplete, I mean what a joke...

3 shows and not one of them had a proper series finale .

So with the DVD movies dead not because of this bullshit DVD Market is struggling (SCI FI shows have built in audiences that buck trends like this) but because MGM have little money. With no shows on the air what will happen to the franchise ? I have little hope of a 4th show to be honest because what story could they tell? and the franchise seems like its not made for the re-make route that ST or BSG went with. Is Stargate as a TV/DVD media dead ?

The opening post you made seems to me to clearly broadcast that you think the show is doomed. I don't know, I don't watch it (as near as I could tell it's a bad, boring rehash of Galactica)... but honestly, my own opinion after having watched all of the preceding two series would simply be for the writers to move on to something else, so they can bleed their creativity dry on something new. Something, you know, non-Stargate related.

That said, if it does get axed, you have my sympathies. Its never fun when your favorite show ends.

I would say Stargate Universe is a better version of Star Trek Voyager, especially if you switch the Maquis with the Lucian Alliance and had the Maquis attempt to take over Voyager in Season One.
I like how SGU treated aliens. Space is huge and it took them almost a season traveling faster than light until they ran into their first alien and they couldn't automatically speak to them like Trek.

I suspect when STARGATE UNIVERSE is cancelled (which will likely happen this season unless SyFy schedules the show better and the show itself somehow improves) that will be the end of Brad Wright, Mallozzi, Mullie, and the rest of the writers who have been with this iteration of the franchise (Robert C. Cooper has already sailed). They might get to produce a wrap-up special or two for DVD, but then they'll be out, and the franchise will be handed over to a whole new team of writers.

That's a bit inaccurate. SG-1 essentially did properly wrap everything up when season 8 ended. By the time it was cancelled, it was only the Ori story that needed to be resolved, and that's been taken care of.

Atlantis has a satisfactory end for me.

Spoiler: the plot of the DVD movie. No, I don't know why I'm spoiler coding this.

I have no desire to see the city return to Pegasus so that Sheppard and McKay can kill every Wraith.

And SGU hasn't done anything to resolve. Honestly, aside from getting everyone back to Earth, what else is there to do?

IF it gets canceled, the franchise will live on. It just needs a break like Trek. Perhaps even a reboot from a movie If not, it could live out some time in direct to DVD movie land.

SG:1 had shows written as "proper finales" (as if they weren't getting a new season) for Seasons 6,7,8 & Ark of Truth.

So it can be easily argued that SG:1 had 4 series finales.

Stargate SG-1 has gotten four finales, just like a previous poster pointed out. It feels the most complete, and since I'm one of those lucky blokes who enjoyed every season of it, it's a very beautiful thing.

Stargate Atlantis was not so fortunate. I still hold out a whisper's hope it will get that telefilm we were all promised two years ago, but with continuation novels on the horizon, that feels about it for it. "Enemy at the Gate" did nothing to give me the feeling of a series finale. It was a breakneck hour of plot contrivances and unsurprising turns. I simply can't agree with Robert Picardo that it was 'well-crafted', as he went on record stating. Not for me, not personally.

Stargate Universe might just get a third season. No, don't quote me on that. I don't know for sure. But it's pulling in better numbers than the superior Caprica, so logic would dictate (lulz) it's got stronger chances. Caprica is tied to a franchise the network is more focused on reminding us it produces, though, and steady enough critical acclaim has its advantages. See also the network's relentless touting of the applause garnered for Battlestar Galactica.

I think it's going to be a showdown -- raw profits versus continuing to lay claim that it holds a 'signature' series. Raw profits typically win in these duels, so I can see SGU getting another year.

I'd rather it didn't. If it's your show, then I'm sorry. Believe me, I know what it's like to lose your favorite. The wounds from Farscape still sting. SG-1 had ten wonderful years, but it could have used two more. And Star Trek: Enterprise was far from perfect, but I'd really hoped for just one more season. I understand your pain. But I don't much care for Stargate Universe, and I do care a bit for Caprica.

And I feel like right now, my beloved Stargate franchise could use a return to form. A return to... Cheyenne Mountain. In my perfect little world, SGU ends -- the sooner the better, ideally with resolution of some kind -- and the franchise goes dormant for three or four years before firing back with Stargate Command -- you know, the name they were thinking of giving to SG-1 before it went into its ninth season.

And SGC makes me laugh, makes me smile, makes me feel something for the cast again, and I can get back into the 'Gate I'm starting to miss.

If CAPRICA is surviving because SyFy wants to lay claim to their signature series, it's toast. There's already BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: BLOOD AND CHROME, a much more action-oriented series, in development.

Interestingly enough, I was just catching up on the ratings thread on GateWorld, and a couple of people reiterated that there's no official sign that Blood and Chrome is anything more than a web series as of yet.

You mean like the 1994 movie? If you mean SG-1 and Atlantis, all I have to say is... God, I hope not. I prefer the more serious take on Stargate that they're attempting with SGU. Hopefully they can continue down this path and eventually do something that's more to everyone's liking.

As for SGU ending, I predicted last year that they'd get three seasons and I can still see it that happening. If they do get a third season or anything beyond that, I hope that they also get fair warning so that they can bring the show to a close, though a scenario like that seems unlikely.
