Now get out of here, before I say something unkind

I may be letting my memories of the DS9 Relaunch novels interfere with a strict reading of the series, but I think the Symbiosis Commission had made it clear that in nearly every instance symbiont > host. And the logic makes total sense if that's all you go by, because why shouldn't an entity that has the knowledge of centuries take precedence over an entity that may not even live for one, especially when the symbionts are an endangered species to begin with while there's plenty of hosts to spare?

Even if Ezri went insane, from the SC's perspective, the symbiont can always be transferred to a more stable joining afterward.

Since we're talking about unconventional joinings in any case, I will say that I enjoyed seeing how Discovery handled it as well, even if some of it was a bit of a head-scratcher for me.

Assuming Dax doesn't go insane too. And if the slugs are so all-fired irreplaceable, why do they let them die if they resume a relationship with a prior lover?

(for that matter, wouldn't rejected hosts like Verad just find a symbiont that's been exiled for re-association?)

Yes, it's the right link. And like I said. Given a choice between boring scruffy Bashir and evil fascist work camp leader Odo, I know which one I'd want to see more of.

I really liked EvilOdo’s “rules of obedience”, or whatever he called it… it has been a while since I watched that I’ll have to pop it in to the Plex later tonight…

it’s too bad they got rid of the character rapidly.

Well, when Joran went insane they managed to get Dax out of him...

I would imagine the death penalty is meant more as a deterrent, similar to the one applied to journeying to Talos IV. It's ultimately a bit hard to take either one very seriously, rather than impressing upon people the gravity of the situation.

How would Verad find such a symbiont? Space-Googling, "Symbionts exiled for reassociation"?

It could be just that simple. I think the Ferengi or Orions would be happy to act as middlemen for that sort of commerce. Rejected host Darev gets the slug he wanted, and the exiled Trill named Xad isn't effectively executed. And the syndicate that put them together gets some latinum. Or weapons. Or the space equivalent of wacky tobacky.

There's an anonymous group for that. Meets at the local Federation Legion hall.
