Northern Exposure

I've been re-watching this show over the past year or so via Netflix. There are some dated 90's elements but overall I think it holds up very well. Anybody else like it?

I loved Northern Exposure when the writing was on target it was one of the best shows on the air, but IMO it kind of fell apart just before Joel left the show.

I'm a HUGE fan of Northern Exposure, having grown up on it. I hated the fifth season with the introduction of Paul Provenza's and Teri Polo's characters when I was younger, but I haven't seen that season in years.

^I have the DVDs. It doesn't improve with age.

Right up til the point where Joel went native though, it one of the smartest show of the 90's with the ways they explored and developed philosophical, anthropological and psychological themes while actually giving us rad little stories to follow each week. And one if the best written; the way they developed the characters should be required study for aspiring TV writers.

I've never seen Twin Peaks, so I can't comment, but from what I've read Northern Exposure is nowhere near as dark as Lynch's television series. Although it can go to dark places, it's always with at least a tinge of comedy in them. I've seen the first two seasons (and much of the third) and have greatly enjoyed it. Of course, it helps that it was filmed in Washington state, where I'm from.

It was a good show. I haven't see the ending. Am not sure how much of it I actually saw but at least two seasons. I liked the mixture of drama and comedy. The setting was good and it had a real middle of nowhere feel to it. The characters were interesting. I liked the DJ (was his name Chris?), the native boy, the shop lady and Joel of course. Good mix of characters anyway.

It always seemed like a Twin Peaks knock off from everything I've read. Is it more than that?

I love both shows. Northern Exposure was nothing like Twin Peaks beyond the fact that it was set in a small town with quirky characters. It was certainly not a knock off, considering they came out the same year.

It was a very good, unique show that only got compared to Twin Peaks because they were both were rather different from regular TV fare and had a similar setting. Northern Exposure kind of lost it when Joel left, but was making something of an effort to continue. Though I never bought the Maggie/Chris match-up after all that - it just was not believable and felt like a tacked on thing, kind of like the 7/Chakotay relationship in Voyager. Despite this, it should be remembered that the show was overly good and did not get canceled due to lower ratings despite the loss of the Joel character. CBS killed it off intentionally.

Have no idea at all where the Twin Peaks comparison comes in. They aren't even remotely similar.

Anyway, I really love Northern Exposure. It wasn't filmed in Alaska - that much is apparent to anyone who has ever actually lived there. But some of the characters are good spoofs on the sort of people who live in Alaska.

It was a fun show. Even if it was filmed in Washington State. :p
