Would Enterprise have worked if they'd left out the Klingons? I know that they are a staple part of all things Trek, but I have found the Klingons to be a hugely over-used species.
Early publicity for Enterprise suggested that it would be very different to the Star Trek we knew, with lots of unfamiliar elements. Only gradually would it come to resemble that we had seen before. And what did we get?
Klingons. A ship called Enterprise, based on a previously seen design, working for an organisation called Star Fleet. Weapons that can stun or kill. Time travel. An American captain, his good friend from the Deep South, and a Vulcan science officer (the last two often argue). Cloaking devices. The last minute use of the transporter to save someone's life.
All of them Trek staples.
And all of them in the very first episode.
