Niners Unite...around Babylon 5!

OmahaStar, thanks for typing out the schedule - that will make it clear to everyone! :)

And as far as the characters go, I think you can do whatever you like with them. I think Jane would be a great one to write 'in character', simply because that is how she comments on everything during the actual show as well.

Myself, I might do a few episodes in character, but perhaps my unique contribution will be that I'll always do a Londo 'Quote of the Episode'...cus he has some of the best quotes in the show!

It's really up to you how you want to use your character! :)

Well I just watched the Gathering which I have not seen in ages. Overall I quite liked it, though I thought the pacing was a bit slow. I might watch Midnight on the Firing Line later today.

Hope I'm not too late to join in!!

Am a total B5 newbie, but have heard so many good things about it from fellow Niners, so went for it and bought Season 1 on DVD. Have watched Midnight On The Firing Line so far – am looking forward to more.

My observations are a bit superficial, since I don't really know what's to come so can’t see the deeper meaning just yet ... But I thought this was a good start to the series. Have to admit, found a few things a little cheesy at first, like the opening segment: “Tell them it’s the …!” *kaboom*. And Sinclair … no, I’m probably going to like him in the end since he was actually more nuanced than seemed at first. But the delivery of a couple lines was quite “U.S. President in a blockbuster” style.

However, am just nit-picking here, since any series needs to find its feet at the start, and all told I thought this episode was a competent introduction! Most of my impressions were definitely favourable! :D I was very quickly drawn in to the Narn/Centauri debate, especially because Londo Mollari and G’Kar were instantly the most charismatic characters. (Incidentally, is it a Centauri rule that everyone should try to look like Kramer from Seinfeld??) Also liked the fact that neither is shown to be entirely in the right, even from the start: liked the mention of the Ragesh 3 sovereignty dispute, for example.

It’s a pretty good plan: place Babylon 5 as the “last best hope for peace” and then set up all manner of potential conflicts erupting around it and within it: calling back to past conflicts and more than hinting at future ones. It puts the series immediately on the defensive, which turns up the tension.

Some of the dialogue was spot on – especially from Londo & G’Kar, but I certainly think I’m also going to like Ivanova! Other, more unexpected touches I liked were the incorporeal Vorlons and the whole telepath issue. Also love the spinning station design AND those funky little pseudo X-wings that just rotate mid-attack! Not to mention Londo’s amazing DIY gun (surely must have been an influence on the film eXistenZ?)

All in all … I’m intrigued, and I want to see more! Can’t really offer too many thoughts at this stage, but am looking forward to watching more.

Yay! More than anyone else here, I was looking forward to your posts! I think you might be the only B5 newbie in the thread, and it is ALWAYS fun to read what the newbies have to say. So definitely keep posting your thoughts - I think I speak for everyone here when I say that we are eagerly awaiting your comments!

I had to chuckle at your observation about the Centauri looking like Kramer. To tell you a little of my own history with B5, I actually stopped watching B5 after only a few episodes when it first came out, and Centauri hair was one of the reasons. I thought it looked simply absurd, and more than that, outright distracting.

It's worthy of note, however, that several years later, my favorite scifi character of ALL TIME in ANY show is Londo Mollari. I won't spoil you, obviously...but Londo takes one hell of a journey on this show...and after a while, you don't even notice the hair thing.

One of my other early complaints was Sinclair - I thought he was a bit wooden. But again without spoiling you, I'll just say that Sinclair ends up being a pivitol character on the show...so pay attention! :D In the end, everything he is right now really mades sense. You'll just have to wait a while to see why. :D

Glad you are into the Londo/G'Kar thing. If you like that part of the show, I can almost promise you will be a HUGE fan of this show by series end.

Don't make any apologies about being a newbie, Llanita! The best part of this thread for us vets is reading your comments! B5 is even more serialized that DS9...and so your comments as a newbie, not knowing where all of this is taking you, are of great interest to us! They sorta bring back to us all of the urgency and excitement of seeing the show for the first time. So don't hold back a thing! :)

I have to agree with you Vash. I'm really looking forward to Llanita's posts.

Keep them coming! ;)

Oh, and Londo isn't the only character that takes one hell of a journey during the course of the show.

You're already hooked - that's great :D

It's exciting to read your comments, I'm looking forward to your reactions to some revelations later in the series! I hope you manage to stay spoiler-free ;)

Thanks very much indeed guys!!! :) Am really looking forward to seeing the rest of B5, largely because of what I've heard about it, because it seems that all the possibilities hinted at in the opening episode (and more) will be fulfilled! So, it's pretty cool for me to be able to watch B5 and come back here, and read everyone else's comments too, since you all know what the focus and relevance of a given episode is. (Am not reading the spoilers, heh! But even without specific details - you all know and love the series, and know which characters are going to get explored really well, how the themes begin to make themselves clear.) It's also great just to discover a new world, as you say. :D Will try to keep up with you all, heh! :)

Am also really glad to hear about Londo and Sinclair - Londo got my attention from the start, he just seems a really charismatic character: Peter Jurasik has a great way of delivering his lines (and of actually distracting you from the hair for a bit, heh)! Am now REALLY intrigued as to how he's going to develop in the future! :D And as for Sinclair - I compared him to the U.S. President characters in big Hollywood disaster movies, but the reason they're annoying is because they ARE presented as unequivocal good guys, rather than merely characters. From what I hear of B5 (and indeed from how it shapes up from the start), I'm SURE he and the others will end up having much more character development than that!

Actually, I just fully realised something about Midnight on the Firing Line which had been nagging at me since I watched it - perhaps the reason I couldn't entirely get my head around the episode at first! It's a really obvious point and should have been self-evident to me, since I didn't see The Gathering. Basically, Midnight starts with the station, races and most of the main characters already established. Moreover, it doesn't kick off any one story - it deals with one incident which may well have consequences, but is part of an already ongoing dispute. The station is introduced to us, but it's not new and neither are the worlds around it - which is actually a pretty ambitious thing to do, so kudos to the creators!

Llanita , I'm so glad you'll be here and watching for the first time! There's nothing like the first time and I envy you. (The second time is also very cool.)

As Vash said, I look forward to your comments and musings as we go along. It brings back my first experience watching the show. Well...except for that waiting months between new episodes thing. And the part about chasing it all over the schedule only to find it pre-empted. Not to mention the nail-biting wait to find out if it was renewed each season. (And yes, it *was* 5 miles to school every day, uphill both ways through blinding snowstorms. Why do you ask? :D)

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Not to take this too far off-topic, but this is one of the reasons we get along SO well ... You're like a sister I never had. I look forward to the day you, TerriO, and I take over Dragon*Con. :D

1.2 - Soul Hunter Spoilers Apply

A few notes first ... I don't normally pay attention to wacky bloopers within the episodes, but studying them again for the reviews has proven .. interesting. For one thing, I had never noticed the overabundance of hats on extras before. Now, every scene in the Zocalo shows that every Human female (and at least one Drazi female) has to wear a hat. Weird.

But I notice that in the stunt doubles, they aren't even trying to get someone who looks like the actor. You'll see.

Soul Hunter is an odd choice as a second episode. It's not a *bad* episode, nor is it a bad choice, it's just an odd one. Why? Because it delves into the metaphysical, into territory never even attempted in Star Trek.

What happens after you die? That is the question raised in this episode.

The Soul Hunter (if they are given names, they do not reveal it here) travels to Babylon 5 on a damaged ship.

2-shship.jpg

He is taken to the MedBay at Sinclair's request, where he is operated on by newly-arrived Dr. Stephen Franklin of Earth. Within seconds, Delenn arrives to investigate; upon seeing the Hunter, she panics.

It is through this panic, and the ensuing chaos, that we discover she was a Satai, and as Sinclair learns a Satai is a member of the ruling body of Minbar, known as the Grey Council.

"What is one of the great leaders of the Minbari doing here playing Ambassador?" the Soul Hunter asks. He does not get an answer.

2-sh.jpg

He escapes from the MedLab and visits N'Grath, who can give him access to all the secret routs within Babylon 5. This means he'll be able to get to Delenn without being tracked.

2-ngrath.jpg

A second Soul Hunter is tracking the first and arrives on the station, helping Sinclair and Garibaldi to find Delenn in time to save her life. The first Soul Hunter is not so lucky.

2-secondsh.jpg

In the end, he's dead and the second Soul Hunter leaves the station without his brother's collection of souls. Delenn, in her quarters, cracks open the soul collection, freeing the souls.

********

Now, a few more things ... There was a lurker who was killed after cheating in a game. Because his family can't afford to ship his body back home, the corpse is given a "space funeral" in which the body is flown into the sun.

I knew it was coming, but had forgotten that the funeral scene included Dr. Franklin. It threw me out of the episode and brought back what happened, like a ton of bricks.

"From the stars we came, and to the stars we return. We therefore commit this body to the deep."

2-fromthestars.jpg

Bloopers ... Did they think we wouldn't notice N'Grath is a guy in a suit? You can even see his legs ...

2-ngrathinsuit.jpg

And did they even try to match the stunt double with the actor playing the Soul Hunter?

2-shagain.jpg

2-shstuntdouble.jpg

Both of the guest actors from this episode will be seen again. William Morgan Sheppard, who plays the Soul Hunter, will be seen again in episode 2.20, playing G'Sten. John Snyder, who plays the second Soul Hunter, will be seen in just a few episodes playing Orin Zento (in the episode by JMS's wife, "By Any Other Means").

New Characters Introduced --

Dr. Stephen Franklin

N'Grath

Tech (well, she was seen briefly in Midnight, but here she actually has lines! She's played by Marianne Robertson, who has no credits other than her time on B5)

Just for the fun of it - Minbari Bondage!

*************************

And in other news, President Santiago returned from an inspection tour of the station at IO. He praised Captain Palaz's handling of the recent crisis as "swift, decisive, motiving and bold."

E-Vid Entertainment, a company recently discovered to have crreated holo brothels using quote "substandard equipment" endquote has been charged in the death of two brothers from Mars. E-Vid owner Maximillian Brite is expected in court later this week.

Turning our eye once again on Babylon 5, correspondant Mary Anne Cramer will be visiting the station next month. Here is your chance to find out the answers to those burning questions. For the next 72 hours, you can submit questions to Mary Anne. She will then answer as many of those questions as her time on the station will allow.

Here's my question, Mary Anne. What is Ambassador Kosh hiding under that mysterious encounter suit?

And now back to you, Alison!

Will do B2tP and Infection soon.

^ Minbari bondage, huh?

And yeah...I think every time I watch B5 these days, I get a bit choked up when I see Richard Biggs. That is still just so tough to handle cus he was so young. :(

I'll be watching Soul Hunter sometime today. And I agree with you that it's an odd choice for the second episode of the show. It's a pretty good one, and certainly something we will be seeing more of later...but nonetheless, an odd sort of 'detour' for episode 2.

Yeah I watched Soul Hunter today, and while it's a decent ep it does seem odd as a second episode.

Just finished watching Soul Hunter - not the most exciting episode IMO, but very interesting nonetheless (it's true, you have to remember all the details, who knows what could be important in a later episode/season ;))

It also reminded me of something that quite annoys me about B5: Spoiler:
There are hardly any episodes that feature ALL the leading characters - e.g. when you see Delenn you can almost be sure that there won't be any sight of G'Kar or Londo :(

Not sure if that even counts as a spoiler, but better safe than sorry ;)

^ Heh, I was just thinking the exact same thing while watching Born to Be Purple and Infection.

Also, it's episode four and one of the main characters listed in the titles still hasn't been introduced.

I have to admit it's very sad watching Richard Biggs now. Last time I made my way through the series he was still alive. :(

Ok, just got done with "Soul Hunter". Pretty corny episode overall and the first of season 1's many alien-of-the-week episodes, but it does plant the seeds for future Minbari-related stuff. On to the random thoughts:

-Hey umm, Soul Hunters? The Ferengi called. They want their headskirts back.

-Not that I'm a fan of the species or anything, but it was nice to see that they reappeared later on (The River of Souls) and not forgotten like a lot of first season's "guest" aliens.

-N'Grath has got to be the single most cheesiest thing in first season.

-Boy, the video quality sure goes down the toilet whenever live action is mixed with CGI, huh?

-Alas, no Vir. Hell, a lot of people are missing from this one.

Ok, "Born to the Purple". Although not perfect, it's better than last episode, and I'm always up for Centauri-centered stories.

- Adira sure is attractive, and Londo certainly deserves a little joy in his life.

- What's the story with Ko'Dath, seeing as how Na'Toth has been listed in the opening credits from the start?

- Garibaldi's security office, with those blue panels from Sinclair's office behind him, brings to mind just how obvious B5's set redresses are. Sure made the most of that oval room over the years, didn't they? ;)

- I like how they're still using newspapers in 2258 and not some futuristic alternative.

- The B-plot with Ivanova was rather touching.

- The "moon-faced assassin of joy" is up to his usual buffoonery and the handheld video game was a bit silly, but it was rather amusing to see Londo give him ambassadorial powers.

From the archives at JMSnews.com:

As y'all may remember, originally we had Mary Woronov slated to be Ko'Dath, G'Kar's assistant. She had *very* real problems with the idea of wearing prosthetics, and also wouldn't wear the red contacts. So we went our
separate ways, and Ko'Dath had an unfortunate accident with an airlock.

This happened, however, right between shooting two episodes in which we *needed* G'Kar's aide present. So our casting director called in Caitlin Brown on about 24 hours notice, and in fact in her first episode, it's mainly Ko'Dath's makeup, somewhat modified, rather than the sleeker Na'Toth makeup you saw later. Slight differences.

Station Report, January 2258. Commander Jeffrey Sinclair Reporting.

Usually it's the Explorer ships that get the first contacts, but today we had one of our own. Two members of a new race who call themselves Soul Hunters recently visited Babylon 5. The Minbari call them Shok Tot, and apparently have quite a history with their race. The fact that we were able to learn this immediately is more evidence that Babylon 5 is doing the job it was meant to.

These "Soul Hunters" seem to have some sort of intuitive understanding of death, and they believe themselves capable of removing the essence of a person before they die for safekeeping. I cannot say I believe in this ability, but the Minbari certainly seem to, as do a number of other alien races represented on the station.

One of the two Soul Hunters turned out to be mentally disturbed, and attempted to murder Ambassador Delenn. Fortunately, we were able to stop him. Hopefully our success in that regard will win us some points with the Minbari government. Please note that in general, Soul Hunters are not killers, although Ambassador Delenn claims they have foreknowledge of important deaths.

My recommendation to EarthGov is that Soul Hunters be denied access to Earth facilities and installations, as their presence is disruptive to a number of alien species, and welcoming Soul Hunters could damage our relations with those species. Additionally, there is some evidence that Soul Hunters do indeed seem connected in some sense to important deaths; the nature of this connection may be something for the PsiCorps to look into.

If one attempts to gain access to an Earth facilty, I recommend temporarily tightening security around all VIPs. It can't hurt to be careful.

End Report
Jeffrey Sinclair, Commanding Officer Babylon 5
