So is this pretty much dead or are others going to be participating?

Nope. Not dead.

In my case, I am just getting 'round to watching the episodes today. The last day!

I think a couple of folks may be on vacation, too, since I've not seen them anywhere all week.

But definitely not dead! :)

Well, I think I will join in on these talks when I can. Its been awhile for B5, a show that really was the first Scifi show that I have watched, were I was utterly impressed with the scope and size of the canvas that JMS worked with. Not always impressed with the final product, but sometimes the attept as its own rewards.

Plus I have only watched season 5 once, and since I was initial displeased that I never watched them again. So here is my chance.

Soul Hunter:

Well, no Londo in this episode, so there is nothing new to report in his character's development.

Otherwise, I guess the thing that impacted me most about Soul Hunter was seeing Richard Biggs for the first time in the show. Especially given the subject matter of this episode. It was almost eerie, listening to Franklin's lines during his conversation with Ivanova at the funeral of the lurker. Eerie...and very sad.

Good development for Sinclair and Delenn in this one. And for all you newbies out there, the single most important line to remember out of this episode is the following:

Delenn (to Sinclair): "I knew you would come....We were right about you..."

Of course, that's all I'll say for now. :D But just keep it filed away in the back of your mind... :p

Born to the Purple:

Okay...so I've always liked this episode. :) I think it's cus we really start to get some development for Londo here, with the entrance of Adira. Additionally, there is a fair amount of development in his relationship with Vir.

I always liked the way they began the realationship with Adira - with inital betrayal. It's so....Centauri! In fact, I think this episode reveals alot about the Centauri culture in general.

In this episode, we also learn a bit more about Ivanova, with the death of her father. Quite moving, if I do say so.

Entertaining aside of the episode:
The handheld game Vir, and later the Narn, were playing while waiting for the negotiations to begin. Even in 2258, they have Gameboys, it seems.

Londo Line of the Episode:
Londo (to Vir): "What do you want, you moon-faced assassin of joy??" :guffaw:

I love that one!

^^^^ Hee, I totally agree!

Btw, Vash ... I gather from your comments that we'll be seeing Adira again ...? That would be good - continuity, yay! :)

And thanks for your response, Lindley! :)

She plays a role later on. That's all I'll say.

And thanks for your response, Lindley! :)

You're welcome.

Infection:

Well, this has never been my favorite episode. But the good news for you newbies is that for most B5 fans, this episode is pretty much the worst one of the entire series. Or at least until the beginning of season 5, anyway. So if you didn't mind this one too much, then you have nowhere to go but up from here! Yay!

No Londo in this one, so nothing new to report regarding his charcter. This one was really alot about Franklin, of course, with a bit of Sincliar, Garabaldi, and Ivanova thrown in. But even Franklin didn't get alot of character development. We see how moral he is, but that's really about it.

I think the message of this episode is really good, however. And I think it's important to remember, as the show moves forward and some of the later themes come out. But for right now, that's about all I can say for this one.

Looking forward to next week though - things start to pick up just a bit!

It's almost time for round three. As a reminder, round two's episodes were "Soul Hunter" "Born to the Purple" and "Infection".

Round Three's episodes are "Parliament of Dreams" "Mind War" and "War Prayer".

In going into the next round, I think I might do a slight change, in adding a rating system, something like x/10 or x/5, something like that. And now that most of the characters have been introduced, I'll probably be cutting down on the screencaps too.

Alight, last call for Round Two.

I'd really prefer to go 4 eps per week....holding back has been rather difficult. But since some people seem to be a bit behind even so, I'll stick with 3 for the moment. Maybe we can speed things up when the arc kicks in down the road.

Episode 5 - "The Parliament of Dreams" 108, by jms, directed by Jim Johnston

If we accept the definition of "Parliament" as "an assemblage of the nobility, clergy, and commons", and "Dreams" as "A wild fancy or hope", then we can take the title "The Parliament of Dreams" to mean it is a coming together or assembly of hope.

And that is, at the end of the day, what Babylon 5 represents - hope.

This is, perhaps, one of the best episodes of the series. And it all stems from a simple concept. Earth Central has an idea (and we know how dangerous that can be) to let each of the major governments showcase their dominant religious belief systems, through a ceremony or demonstration.

For the Centauri, that means a grande celebration. For the Minbari, a rigid ceremony. And for Earth, well ... I think it's the first of its kind in any visual media, be it television or films.

Really, is there anything this episode lacked? It's got romance (Sinclair/Sakai), intrigue (G'Kar/Na'Toth/Tu'Pari), death (the bodyguard), mythology and religion (the whole episode), the introduction of two major, long-term characters (Lennier and Na'Toth), comedy ("But in purple, I'm stunning"), politics (G'Kar's Circle), it's got two seperate, but both important revelations about Sinclair's FuturePast, AND it demonstrates what a great idea recycling can be (Na'Toth's makeup for most of this episode is the makeup used for the Ko'Dath character).

This episode rates a 9/10.

As we've been reporting, this week has seen one celebration after another aboard Babylon 5. As part of President Santiago's "Come Together" initiative, each major government has demonstrated their dominant religious beliefs aboard the station. Reports indicate this initiative has been a complete success, capped off today with Commander Sinclair's demonstration of all major Earth religions.

In other news, the search is still on for renegade former Psi Corps instructor Jason Ironheart. ISN reporter Mary Majors has a special report on this breaking story.

Quite possibly, Lindley.

Once things get really rolling later on, I think alot of people have difficultly trying to stop watching.

There might also be the possiblity of doing 4 on *some* weeks - in weeks were 4 might better suit the arc of episodes being watched. That way people wouldn't have to watch 4 every week, but only occasionally.

We'll see how things go. I think most folks are caught up at the end of this (past) week, but I think a couple of people must be on vacation cus I've not seen them anywhere on the net this past week...and I have no idea if they are caught up or not.

Unfortunately I'm finding it VERY hard to limit myself, so much so in fact that I watched this weeks episodes before I should have. :o

Well I just watched Purple and I liked it more then I thought I would. I remember the last time I watched it, I was kinda bored but this time I quite enjoyed it. Londo a few priceless lines aswell. :D

Babylon 5 Official Records Archive Search:
Station Report, March 2258. Commander Jeffrey Sinclair Reporting.

The recent "cultural exchange" which took place on Babylon 5 was a definite success. The demonstrations of religion and spirituality from the various races present were enlightening and fascinating.

What struck me most about the whole affair was the relatively small number of religions presented from each race. The Narn have only a few differing ideologies; the Centauri have dozens but seem to consider them all much the same thing; as far as I can tell, there is only one religion among the Minbari. Most of the rest are better left unrecounted. The Pak'ma'ra ceremony was....unique.

For my own part, I knew there was no way to explain every religion on Earth, or even the major ones. So instead, I found and gathered members of as many religions as I could find on the station. I don't know if this has imparted any deeper understanding of Earth spirituality on the other races, but it is my hope that it will impress on them our diversity and tolerance.

End Report
Jeffrey Sinclair, Commanding Officer Babylon 5

I've got a question for you people who saw the show when it originally aired; how did you cope with the wait between episodes and even worse, not knowing if the show was going to be renewed at the end of each season?

This is my second time going through the whole series and I'm still telling myself "just one more episode" everytime I actually sit down to watch it. It must be one of the most compelling shows ever made.

It was worse than what you're describing. See, not only did we have the wait, the uncertainty of whether it would come back, we also had Paramount ... See, Paramount did their damndest to make sure any station showing DS9 did NOT show Babylon 5, and if they did show it, not at a time anyone could actually see it.

And then, we had the local stations themselves constantly changing when it would air. For the first 2-3 years, it never aired in the same timeslot for more than one month. After a few weeks to a month, they'd change, and it was almost always at some time like 2 in the morning.

And then we had PTEN, in their finite wisdom, who decided that instead of having the whole season played, they would hold back the last 4 episodes. I dunno if you noticed, but the last episode of each season was pretty much a HUGE cliffhanger. Well, who cares what kind of cliffhanger you've got when the very next week, the new season starts up?

It wasn't until year 4 that JMS put a cliffhanger in episode 18, knowing the last 4 would be held back.

Then, of course, the local stations showed those last 4 episoded then never showed em again, because of the year 5 switch to airing on TNT. It wasn't until they were shown on TNT exclusively that we had a consistant timeslot. Of course, then they screwed it up when they stopped airing it midway through, so they could show basketball instead.

It just goes to show, if someone started at the beginning, and actually held out to the very end, a fan just doesn't get more dedicated than that.

Sinclair's line about trying to find a place with a map and a oiji (sp?) board ... that was pretty much us for 4 years.

^ I think that shows what a great show it was/is then. Most series would never survive that kind of treatment.

I'd love JMS to get another shot at the B5 'verse. This time on a channel other than TNT!

The Parliament of Dreams

Well, this is a pretty good episode I think. We meet Lennier for the first time, for one thing, and we get to see a bit more about the various cultures.

I loved the Centauri banquet. It sorta makes sense and is very consistent with everything we know about their culture so far.

I also loved this exchange, when Londo passes out on the table:

Vir: "Ah! He has become one with his inner self!"

Garabaldi: "He's passed out!"

Vir: "That too."

:guffaw:

Not really a Londo Line of the Episode, but a Londo-related Line of the Episode, anyway.

Gotta love it!

I thought the Minbari thing was interesting too - especially once we learned that it was also a marriage ceremony!

Overall, a good episode!

Now, onward to Mind War.

So the real life thing has intruded already and I'm behind...but I don't really have anything insightful to add to the the discussion of the previous three episodes anyway. Suffice it to say there are two significant lines in "Soul Hunter" - "They're using you!!!" and "I knew you would come" - two of those puzzle pieces I mentioned a while ago. "Born to the Purple" and "Infection" have never done much for me, quite frankly, although they're not horribly unwatchable by any means.

Vash has already mentioned my favourite lines from "The Parliament of Dreams", the first of many masterpieces the series produced. I'll be watching it and the other assigned episodes some time this week. I'll even say something in the thread. :D
