NHL Offseason 2011

GO JETS GO!
Nice! I was hoping they'd bring back the old Jets name. It was really the only choice, IMO.

The Bruins selected defenseman Dougie Hamilton with the 9th overall pick. So that officially closes the book on the Kessel trade, which was basically Phil Kessel for Tyler Seguin, Jared Knight, and Hamilton. I don't know, well, anything about Hamilton, but the TSN guys were raving about him and couldn't believe he'd dropped to 9th, so I guess that means he's pretty good. :techman:

So the Leafs pick up John Michael Liles for a second rounder.

He's pretty much equivalent to Tomas Kaberle in point totals, though the fans on the Colorado page are ready to send a lynch mob after Greg Sherman.

I for one am okay with this. A draft pick is an unknown commodity. Sure it could be Wayne Gretzky. But it could also be Alexandre Daigle or Patrik Stefan.

Not only that, but it's the pick we got for Kaberle. I'd call that a pretty decent win for the Leafs.

I'm just wondering who Liles will be paired with, now. Phaneuf would make sense, but so would Schenn in a way (quarterback + stay-at-home defensive type).

So Canucks have resigned Bieksa (5 years, 23 million, 4.6m cap hit) and Lapierre (2 years, 2 million, 1m cap hit). Yay! That takes care of our shutdown pair (Hamhuis and Bieksa) and fourth line C. Hopefully Gillis can also sign Ehrhoff, though I think he might want a bit more than the Canucks can afford.

Well Mike Milbury is obviously terrible. But I'm not sure Pierre is an improvement. A warning to parents: if your son has ever played junior hockey, Pierre McGuire knows his blood-type!

Lock the doors!

Talbot and Jagr both sign in Philly? Good lord.

Talbot's contract is overpayment and a horrible length, and Jagr has a reputation as a worse locker room presence than Richards and Carter could ever hope to be. That said, it's a nauseating day for Pittsburgh fans. :barf:

Meanwhile, the Blackhawks signed Jamal Mayers, who used to be a good plugger / 3rd-line guy and is now a 36-year-old waste of space, though he still retains his ability to shoot wide of the net on every breakaway he gets.

Seriously, the dude wasn't even worth $550,000 to the Sharks. He's awful.

Oh, and at the same time, they signed fucking Sean O'Donnell. Jesus, it's looking like the NFL lockout won't leave me without a venue for over-the-top ranting. What the fuck, Chicago.

As for the Jagr / Philly deal, I can't stop laughing. He and Pronger will murder each other before the third month of the season. Also, he just guaranteed that the Penguins will never retire his number.

I don't get the Jagr signing. I suppose they thought of it as a "why not," but they paid him a bit much for it. Maybe they did it as a "fuck you" to the Penguins, though.

The boos that Jagr will face will be epic.

Apparently Holmgren is signing the players that totally fucked the Flyers in the '90s. Maybe the next step is signing Scott Stevens out of retirement.

Edit: Also, I wasn't kidding about Jagr's locker room issues. He's always done things his own way, and says "fuck you" to anyone else. I cannot imagine him and Pronger getting along. One of them will be in a chokehold executed by the other not long after the season begins.

At $3.3 million ... man, Philadelphia, you deserve what you get. Jesus.

The Blackhawks picked up Andrew Brunette. Even though he's 37, he's still a nice player. He'll go to the dirty areas, he's got a nice passing touch, and he's durable.

The Avalanche have acquired Varlamov from the Capitals in exchange for a future draft pick. At least he's not Brian Elliott.

No, he's shitty. He just isn't as shitty as Jamal Mayers, which makes the signing look better. (Although maybe he can continue to kill the Sharks -- I'm OK with this.)

In other news, the Panthers signed Ed Jovanovski.

They didn't just sign him. They signed him for four years and $16.5 million. What the Christ -- is Florida just desperate to reach the cap floor?

Seems pretty clear that they've given up on Budaj, then.

No major signings or resignings for the Bruins yet, but Michael Ryder signed a two-year deal with the Dallas Stars. I don't think the Bruins were planning on resigning him anyway. And from the sound of it, Tomas Kaberle likely won't be back either, which, considering his meager contributions (especially in the playoffs), is fine by me.

I wouldn't call 50 points while playing in 82 regular season games shitty, but maybe I've got a different definition than you.

Budaj signed with Montreal. The Avs also acquired Giguere, signing him to a 2 year deal.

Yeah some of the deals signed today are absolutely insane.

Yeah. Kind of makes me glad the Leafs didn't go out and sign anyone today, because there were some ridiculously inflated contracts coming out. I mean, Christian Erhoff is earning $1.3 million more than Crosby next year. Erhoff is good, sure, but that's crazy.

He had 46 points in 2010 - 11, and was a -7. And he's 37. If he sniffs the second line, I'ma murder Joel Quenneville.

God, if only Tallon hadn't totally fucked the dog on the salary cap with things like the Campbell contract. They could still have Buff and Versteeg... :(

Following up on this, it was Colorado's first and second-round 2012 draft picks for Varlamov. Holy shit. A first-round pick in what's going to be a very good draft, one in which the Avs are likely to pick high because they blow. (Didn't he sign with a KHL team, too? Here comes a slapfight....) Anyway, Sherman gets the Idiot King 2011 award. Instead of signing Varlamov to an offer sheet, he just traded the prime picks of a good draft for a backup goaltender with a history of injuries who had made it clear, in no uncertain terms publicly and privately, that he would not play for Washington next year.

Now I just want to see what Glen Sather will do, because I refuse to believe he'll allow anyone to out-do him in terms of outright insanity.

And now we have a report of Richards signing with the Rangers for nine years.

These long term contracts are insane. Richards will be 40 when the contract is done and will probably be useless long before then. Didn't the Rangers just buy out Chris Drury for the exact same thing?
