NHL Offseason 2011

And we've got a logo (or two or three)...

I approve. :techman:

Oh, and the line-up to get into the Official Store was almost a block long less than an hour after this was announced. I decided to try another day (assuming there will be anything left).

The one using the "Rondeau" (sp)looks like a symbol we use for DND in the Canadian forces I think that should be on the shoulder its too gaudy for the front of the jersey. the crossed sticks and wings is perfect for the front of the jersey.

I quite like both of the actual logos, but the font they chose for the one that's mainly "Jets" is awful.

Really? Because some people are likening it to the Blue Jays logo. To quote one local blogger: it looks "like we broke into a shed in the Toronto Blue Jays' backyard and stole some of their unused design tweaks."

I do agree with you though, I don't like that one very much.

Oh, there's no doubt about it. True North was very explicit in thanking DND for their assistance in the design process. The jerseys will be unveiled later, but it is the primary logo, so I'm pretty sure it will be the one on the jerseys.

I didn't hear about them thanking us (DND) but that is cool.
I would have done the jet a bit different using the same grey style and back ground, but having it in a take off flight mode from a 3/4 angle, just would have looked more aggressive.

Oh, yeah, it's definitely very similar to the Jays current look. But I'm also looking forwards to the rumoured redesign that they'll be taking on this offseason. ;)

I've come to like the actual Jay logo in my avatar, but as a whole, their current look is very amateurish.

The Islanders have another arena deal shot down:

What's the deal here? Is Wang the problem? Have the Islanders just been so bad for so long that Long Islanders no longer want to support it? I think it'd be a historical shame to lose the Islanders (it's not like a decade of the Thrashers, we're talking Stanley Cups, Mike Bossy, Denis Potvin, etc.)

As for the Weber contract, sure he's great and the money is deserved, but Nashville will not pay it. If they do, they have no chance of bringing anyone else in to help out, bringing a new definition to rock and a hard place.

^ I don't think Nashville has a lot of choice, do they? An arbitrated contract is binding, if I'm recalling correctly. Unless they trade him, of course.

As for the Islanders, I think it's pretty much all Wang, yeah.

An arbitrator has awarded Shea Weber with a massive $7.5 million, one-year contract. He's one of the best d-men in the league, but that is a huge wad of cash.
That seems a bit excessive to me. He'll have the largest cap hit of any defenseman.

As for New York and Wang. Apparently the Nassau County Republicans killed Wang's attempt to build a privately funded arena free of government funding. Now the Democrats have rallied against the publicly funded arena. Craziness.

This entire thing was botched by Nassau County. For YEARS, Charles Wang has offered his own money to build a new arena, and even rebuild the surrounding area. For years, and for no reason at all, the county has refused to let him do that. So instead, they propose a referendum where a nearly bankrupt county will pony up at least $400 million of its own dollars to build a new arena?!? Of course, makes perfect sense.

I think the Preds offered him $4.5, even though they have a TON of cap space!

He's a beast and his beard almost singlehandedly beat the Canucks in the playoffs.

Hopefully he does the 1 year thing and then jumps ship over here. BC boy! :)

A team has 48 hours following the arbitrator's ruling to decide whether to accept the award, or to decline, which then gives the player the right to declare himself an unrestricted free agent.

^ That's in case if the player files for arbitration. If the team files for arbitration, they have to pay up. In this case the Preds filed for arbitration, so they have to give Weber the 7.5 million. Of course they can trade him right after if they want to. But considering they're like 7 million below the cap floor, I really don't see that happening.

Is that true? I'm pretty sure one of the terms of the 2005 CBA was that a team could still walk away from an award if they didn't like it, even if the team was the party that initiated arbitration.

In any event, it's a moot point; the Predators very clearly want to keep Weber for the long term, and the only way they're going to trade him is if he makes it very clear that he will not sign a multi-year deal to stay in Nashville.

Trivia time!

Which current NHL player was arrested Friday for hitting a cop?

A.) Sean Avery.
B.) Sean Avery.
C.) Sean Avery.
D.) Sean Avery.

What a dumbass.

Sean Avery is a blemish on hockey.

He may bring fans into the seats, but if they are coming to see him, do you really want those fans in the stands? (besides money)

Avery is basically the modern-era Bob Probert, without the wheelbarrows of cocaine. And, no, I don't really want those "I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out" fans in the stands at all.

I try to travel to Chicago as much as I can for Blackhawks games, but there's a reason almost all of my hockey viewing is either UW Badgers college hockey here in Madison or Fighting Saints junior hockey down in Iowa.
