NHL 2008-2009 Discussion!

Yesterday was a brutally long day for me, and I actually fell asleep before a goal was scored by either Calgary or Vancouver, but I am quite glad we won.

Calgary Herald says Luongo's got a groin strain and will be "week-to-week." So it may not be months.

You in Calgary? More importantly: am I no longer the only Flames fan around here? :Rommie:

Sharks just tied the best record to start an NHL Season with the Habs. That record has stood for 65 years. I gotta say this is the best I've ever seen San Jose. Thornton had a night, and this team is just clicking in all aspects of the game. Loving the play of Seto and Pavelski too.

Last night in the Flyers-Lightning game, some Tampa player had a break away goal. Scott Hartnell was chasing after him, but couldn't catch up, so he decides to throw his glove at the guy. Of course, they call a penalty shot, which, thankfully, Biron saved, otherwise this story wouldn't be quite as amusing. It's not every day you see someone throw a glove at someone else :D

I actually thought Avery's comment was pretty hilarious. I don't think it warranted a suspension, but I can understand why they did it from a funsmashing point of view.

As much as I dispises the Flames and 98% of their fans , Avery is a tool, but for those who had him picked in there pools in the enforcer group I guess you'll have to trade him away.

"I'm really happy to be back in Calgary. I love Canada," Avery said in front of cameras. "I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds.( Elisha Cuthbert ) I don't know what that's about, but enjoy the game tonight."- Sean Avery

Elisha Cuthbert who hails from Calgary is dating Dion(sp) Phaneuf of the Flames,

He wasn't suspended for those comments. It's pretty much everything that came before. I personally found the comments to be funny, and kind of true.

I'm a little surprised and disappointed Avery didn't ask Dion how his dick tasted when Dion kissed Elisha.

This sounds like it was the last straw and that nobody in the Stars room was really happy with him and he was causing problems in the room.

What? Avery has never been suspended by the league before. He's been involved in a couple of incidents that were never really provable one way or the other. Guy is just mouthy, but that's certainly nothing new in the NHL, no? And I'm not an Avery fan, I'm damn happy he isn't on my team, but I do think he's getting a bum rap here.

Jason Whitlock, my favorite sports writer, sums it up nicely I think:

http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl/story/8888964/Avery-might-be-dumb,-but-Bettman-overreacted

He's right, since when is "sloppy seconds" a verboten term?

Also something to consider, Bettman is just bringing more bad attention to the league than is necessary by making a big deal out of this. Bettman doesn't handle anything well these days though so I'm not surprised. He should have let it be handled on the ice - Phaneuf, Iginla, someone should have beaten the shit out of him - and then it's sorted. This really personifies what is wrong with the league in terms of too much policing which creates disrespect rather than letting hte players police it themselves, which is far more effective I think.

I know but you don't think past history had anything to do with this current suspension. All these comments were were the tipping point.

Yeah, you could be right - I mean there's no denying the guy pushes the envelope and acts like a jerkoff sometimes, but so do plenty of other players, Ryan Kesler or Alex Burrows on my team for instance. Fact of the matter is there is a place in the NHL for a pest like that. I guess what rubs me the wrong way is that he's never actually been found guilty of anything, and to suspend him indefinitely for this?

They should have at least let him play that night so Dion could have a shot at him.

They're making him sound like the anti-christ. The ESPN story on it warned that it contained "graphic language that some may find offensive". After the story was over, I thought, "is that it"?

Far more effective than a suspension I think. A flurry of punches to the head from Iggy or Phaneuf sting more than a 2 or 3 game suspension I think. Let the players police that, both Calgary's and Dallas', because you know there are a few guys on Dallas that aren't impressed.

Totally, I had the same reaction. PC bullshit I tell ya!

I'm inclined to agree. I'm surprised Avery hasn't been clocked long before this (by NJ, if no other team would do it). Has anyone ever seen him fight?

Yet they are all over a could-be felon in Plexico Burress like it's the biggest newstory since the invention of the wheel. More example of how much ESPN is a joke these days. If only NHL Network could get people with more personality, than I would have that, NBA TV and NFL Network and would never have to worry about ESPN ever again.

^Over-dramatize much?

(Talking just about the Article just in case there is confusion. ;) ).
