NFL 2021 season - Belichick Strikes Back

Aaron Rodgers is back in Green Bay for the beginning of what he increasingly seems to be painting as his Last Dance - one final go with the Packers before he heads off to a new team in 2022. Two consecutive NFC title games - will the third time be the charm or is this dance destined for disaster?
 
Was kind of hoping he would cut bait w/ GB and go to either Denver or Washington.

He's got kind of a scruffy look this pre-season with the overgrown beard and man-bun. He doesn't have the best relationship with the GB front office right now. I hope he doesn't over-do the disgruntled, rebellious teenager thing and whiff it this season, ruining chances for a favorable move to another team next year.
 
As a Bears fan, I was really hoping he'd piss off to another team or sit it out altogether.

Both he and the team have been acting like spoiled brats, but no team should ever have to ask their star QB for draft advice or for moves other than what the offense should look like on game day.
 
Preseason starts in a few weeks so we'll finally get to see our teams line up on the field. For myself, my anticipation of the 2021 Texans is about as low as it can get. About the only thing exciting about the Texans is trying to figure out where Watson will end up. Will he be kicked out of the league and the Texans get nothing for him, or, will the Texans as usual screw up the trade and get practically nothing for him?

It's funny how they said Watson was available just about the same time actual criminal charges were filed.

Like the 20+ lawsuits were all going to magically disappear :rolleyes:

If they hadn't stepped in a big pile of shit by drafting Jordan Love then there would've been no controversy. They are obviously deathly afraid to turn the offense over to him, which makes me question why they drafted him to begin with?

If I'm your QB and you draft another one with your first round pick, what exactly am I supposed to take away from it? If I was Rodgers, I probably would demand a trade as well. The Packers created the situation where they now have to bend over and kiss Rodgers ass, or turn the team over to a QB who isn't ready and likely lose their jobs (GM, HC) in the process.

What you take away is, you aren't gonna play forever and you're getting injured more and more often. Are they supposed to wait until Rodgers retires or gets a career ending injury to draft his replacement?

Obv they thought Love was better than he turned out to be. Franchise QB's don't come along every year, esp late in the round.

What Rodgers took away was what they intended for him to take away, or else they would've huddled with him and gave him a heads up of their long term plans at the position. They work with the man everyday, they had to know he wouldn't react well to the pick, especially when they blindsided him with it.

So much of winning is knowing the personalities you are dealing with. If they thought that master plan was going to go off without a hitch, they don't deserve to be an NFL GM or Head Coach. It will be interesting to see what happens to the two of them when Rodgers is no longer there to prop them up.

My opinion is, no player is so important that they should discuss draft plans with him. IDK how it's blindsiding. You have to know they would need to draft a QB at some point, even if they overestimated how good the guy was.

Waiting until Rodgers retires or gets seriously injured is a recipe for a long string of bad years if they miss drafting a good replacement to spare his massive ego.

I disagree there. The QB is the one running your offense, everything on that side of the field goes through him. He shouldn't have a final say, but I think not discussing what can make the team better with him is pure folly. This is the guy, on any team, that you want to put the team on his shoulders and carry it.

That $20 million dollar a year receiver that DeVante Adams wants to become is worthless without someone to get him the ball. That $12 million dollar a year Running Back (Aaron Jones) is useless if defenses don't respect your passing game.

Not disagreeing that Rodgers is the biggest part of the team. As a Bears fan I know he is. But if you start discussing things like that with one player, you might have other players wanting a "voice" in things. Then other talented QB's on other teams will want that.

The front office should know what they're doing (not always the case) and should be making moves based on team needs.

If you're playing Madden franchise (I do!), I agree. If you're an actual GM, you have to take the personalities already on your roster into account for pretty much any additions/subtractions you make.

Unfortunately for the Packers, they aren't going to be able to plug a 50 OVR Jordan Love into 94 OVR Aaron Rodgers spot and get the same production. :lol:

An NFL team has what, 53 personalities on it? Some more talented and critical than others. But it is a business before all, even a publicly held team like the Packers.

And yeah, no doubt Love is a bust.

Yep, and they're paying Rodgers a lot of money. His deal was for four years and $125 million that finishes this year. With two more years at (2022, 2023) at $25,000,000 each. Which is a bargain in the current environment for a player of his caliber.

I still don't know what they were thinking with the Love pick? They could've picked someone mediocre in the fourth- or fifth-round and brought in a veteran to back up Rodgers. The Love pick absolutely feels like a "Madden pick". Somebody trying to manipulate the cap with a cheap option. Unfortunately, the real NFL doesn't operate like Madden and the Packers are still on the hook for two years guaranteed of Jordan Love's contract. If they weren't planning on replacing Rodgers with Love, the pick makes even less sense as both would be free agents after 2023. If you kept Rodgers, you were going to have a first round pick essentially sit on the bench for the entirety of their contract...

Considering the supposed strict conduct rules of the NFL (:lol:) I find it amazing he's even allowed to practice with the team. Which he is. Reports from training camp is he's throwing to the receivers and also getting worked out as a safety. Yeah, a safety. That was weird.

If he gets hurt, the Texans will be on the hook for his salary and medical bills. They really should send him home until they know what to do with him. At the very least, they shouldn’t have him taking part in any kind of physical drills.
 
It seems those rules are fluid in every sport. Starlin Castro just got a 30 game ban from Manfraud, meanwhile Trevor Bauer continues his paid vacation.
 
Huh... That’s an intriguing thought. Well, I suppose if they get a good enough deal from the city, complete with a shiny new stadium, why the hell not?
