NFL 2020 Season: We're gonna bite a kneecap off

I've been continuing to visit the NFL way back machine on YouTube.

I found the last of the Chicago Bears replacement games from 1987, versus New Orleans. I had never known that Sean Payton (now the Saints head coach) was a replacement QB for Chicago. He was pretty awful, sealed the game for New Orleans with a late interception.

Some "highlights"...

You know, the best head coaches are usually mediocre (at best) players. That seems to be a constant across all sports.

I've mentioned this before, but there's a great anecdote in the book Moneyball, in which Scott Hatteberg talks about how much of a terrible hitting coach Jim Rice was, because he just expected everyone to be as good as him.

Shit, the same applies to me; I taught both Photoshop and video production at my alma mater, and I was a fucking awful teacher because I couldn't convey actual lessons, I was just like, "It's right there, you can do it."

The same was true of Bob Gibson as a pitching coach. Can you imagine Gibson coaching Phil Neikro?

I’m the same way. I chalk it up to, “I just do it... I don’t teach”. I simply don’t have the temperament for it.

The same thing happened in hockey. Wayne Gretzky was brutal as a head coach and spent most of his time looking angry that he couldn't just drag the Coyotes to victory.

The true geniuses are generally not "people persons". That's a universal rule across sports, music, etc.

Mike Maddux was an OK pitcher, but seems to be a good enough pitching coach so as to always have a job. Greg is a whole other story. HOF pitcher, sometimes works as a consultant or whatever, but probably no way he could convey what made him great and would probably come off as an a-hole if he tried to coach.

I too have been revisiting the annals of NFL history. I watched the 1989 AFC title game between the Broncos and Browns.

Elway's Broncos survived a late Browns comeback attempt and ended up advancing. I wonder if the confidence gained will translate into a good performance against the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIV! :p

It didn't.

I missed it - what did he say originally that caused all the fuss?

When asked for his opinion about players kneeling to protest police brutality once the NFL season begins this fall, Brees had said he would "never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag."

"And is everything right with our country right now? No, it's not," Brees said in the interview. "We still have a long way to go. But I think what you do by standing there and showing respect to the flag with your hand over your heart, is it shows unity. It shows that we are all in this together, we can all do better, and that we are all part of the solution."

It was incredibly tone deaf. Why would one salute a flag of a nation that clearly doesn’t care about them? Why would one want to show unity to that flag?

It is like telling a Jewish person to respect and salute a Nazi flag.

Still somewhat apprehensive about the upcoming season. Very much looking forward to a familiar distraction, but I think it's going to be a generally hot mess of a year for a lot of teams.

After all this political upheaval and quarantine I am not sure I want the NFL back. I know people want the distraction but I don't know how beneficial it is.

Yes, this is an odd thread to post it but I have no idea where else to do so.

Better than we did in 2019...

Don’t feel bad, we haven’t been in nearly forty years. Haven’t won in nearly fifty. Hard to feel good about your team when the last notable achievement you can point to is Dan Marino’s 5,000 passing yards and 48 TD passes in 1984.

That's not necessarily true...

In 2000 you guys lost a playoff game by 55 points!

That's got to be some kind of record.

:nyah:
