NFL 2020 Season: We're gonna bite a kneecap off

IDK, I've seen worse redesigns.

I just don’t get the hate I’m seeing for these uniforms. There is only a slight change of the basic design. The horns on the helmets are basically the same. The arches on the shoulders are hardly changed. The only issue I see is that the new Rams logo, which I do think needs some reconsideration, is still on the jersey.

What IS irritating to me is that the Raiders, who are also moving into a new stadium, have sad nothing about a new uniform. They don’t have to make big changes,.just black pants and maybe a modification of the pirate logo. Brand new stadium, new fans, the Raiders need to build as much excitement as possible.

Raiders are a classic brand, I'd rather see their look left alone.

I agree, and I’m not talking about major changes in the fundamental look. But I’v seen some modifications of the pirate logo that I like, like making it bigger. What I’d really like to see are a black pants and black socks ensemble. I’d also like to see a black helmet with white or silver logo.

These would be all alternate unis and not full time. I just don’t get that every team in the league has more than one alternate uniform while the only alternate the Raiders have are thos butt ugly white unis with the nearly unreadable matching white numerals.

So I'm watching a Cowboys-Bears game from 1984 on YouTube. Jim McMahon has a bad back and broken hand, but still plays the first three-and-a-half-quarters. They finally pull him for a guy named Rusty Lisch, who wears #12. Lisch is just all kinds of terrible, making me wonder why they didn't put Bob Avellini in to play.

After the game, I do a bit of a search on Rusty Lisch, and this is what Deadspin had to say about him...

"Sure, Leaf and Russell were bigger busts. Lisch, after all, was a fourth-round pick who had backed up Joe Montana at Notre Dame. But if you have one game you need to lose, and you require a quarterback to take you there, Lisch is — hands down — the man you want. In 115 career attempts he threw one touchdown and 11 interceptions. That one touchdown came in St. Louis on Oct. 9, 1983. The pass traveled a single yard, to tight end Doug Marsh. With Neil O'Donoghue's extra point, the Redskins' lead was cut to 31-14 — late in the contest.

Oh well. 1984 wasn't their year. The "up next" game is Dallas v Chicago, 1985. We know how that one turned out.

They were an odd team, became super dominant for a year with a defense no one could beat then kind receded as quickly as they came. Mike Ditka and Buddy Ryan were definitely better together than they were apart.

I agree. I still think that their dominance would have been short lived even with Buddy staying. The defense was still a great one for a few years after Buddy left(number one in 1986), but the offense stayed basic and pedestrian.:run left, run right, throw a pass every now and then to Payton or Gault. They were too predictable. .McMahon could never stay healthy and they never found a competent replacement. And once more teams copied Miami's blueprint on beating the 46 eg" spread them out and force the linebackers to cover slot receivers, that defense was done. But that 85 team was certainly the most dominant one I've seen in all my years of watching football.

With Ryan leaving and McMahon constantly injured, they seemed to lose their swagger after Super Bowl XX.

The Raider fan base is also extremely loyal. I don't see any need to change whatsoever, and I imagine the pushback from the "Raider Nation" would be quite explicit.
Actually, most Raider fans hate the Raiders’ so called color rush jerseys. They’re all white with white numbers. They’re dull and unimaginative. Most of the fans would like an all black jersey. Can’t believe the number of teams whose primary colors aren’t even black, who have all black jerseys.

The helmet could also be black with silver stripe and a white pirate logo, or they could go with the same helmets. Personally, I’d wouldn’t mind enlarging the pirate head on the regular silver helmet. But these changes aren’t anything radicle. Really only involves adding black pants.

I've been continuing to visit the NFL way back machine on YouTube.

I found the last of the Chicago Bears replacement games from 1987, versus New Orleans. I had never known that Sean Payton (now the Saints head coach) was a replacement QB for Chicago. He was pretty awful, sealed the game for New Orleans with a late interception.

Some "highlights"...
