I remember a similar weirdness on a kickoff some years back. The rule is that if a kickoff goes out of bounds, the ball is placed 30 yards (I think) from where the kick was made.
In the game I was watching my team kicked off and the returner caught the ball on the fly while standing still with one foot out of bounds. But my team was penalized for an out of bounds kick! I was pissed because the returner went out of bounds with the ball. I thought it should have been placed at that spot. But apparently, that's not how the rule reads. Maybe its all in the timing. I guess it depends on the officials determining if the catch was made before, during or after he stepped out?
