NFL 2014-2015 Season Discussion

I hope the media takes them to task for this.

The "media" bears responsibility also. After all, they help transform flawed people into heroic figures they feel are worthy of our adulation.
Exactly how does the "media" force anyone to worship those who have been placed on these pedestals? I'de say that the ones who fall for the trick are the ones who should bear some responsibility.

Nowhere in my or Skywalker's statements is the word "force", or the idea of "force" used. I wonder then, why are you quoting us and putting words in our mouths?

So what's the over/under on how many times the name "Ray Rice" will be mentioned during Thursday night's game?

By the way, from the NFL's perspective is there any WORSE PR-nightmare matchup than Ben "alleged sexual assault" Roethlisberger vs. the team that used to pay Ray Rice?

I would conjecture that if that had been the first time he'd badly hit her, she wouldn't have apologized.

Beat somebody once, they're mad at you. Beat somebody regularly, they're mad at themselves.

No, you didn't mention the word, "force" which is beside the point. Your post (not Skywalker's), implies that the media is responsible for shaping the public's view of a person by the way the media portrays that person.

My point is that if you accept the media's depiction of a person as that person's true self, then it is your fault, or the public's, for that misconception, not the media.

The media doesn't "transform" anyone. People are who they are regardless of how they are portrayed in the media. Holding the media responsible for a person's actions based on their incorrect perception of themselves or the public's incorrect perception, is just another cop out and a way to shift responsibility.

But besides all that, domestic abuse is certainly not exclusive to people who are the subject of media scrutiny. Most domestic abuse cases involve people who the "media" is completly unaware of. Are we going to blame the media in those cases too?

"It's the media's fault" is a cliche that really needs to be put to rest.

The Associated Press is reporting that a law enforcement official sent the Ray Rice elevator footage to the NFL on April 9, and that it has a voice recording of an NFL executive confirming receipt.

Get fucked, Goodell.

^ They just cut away from Around the Horn to have that as breaking news. I'm not sure it's breaking news, though, which is pretty obnoxious. I'm sure they could have waited until 6.

I don't think that's necessarily true. Do you have anyone in a professional position that deals with situations like this who said something like that. Regardless of if it's once or many times, making excuses is just making excuses (because of either emotional attachment or emotional dependence for the person). Generally, those who make excuses would make an excuse the first time as well (hence why they stay with the person). Those not inclined to make excuses would likely not stay and get hit a second time. But I don't think there's anything besides speculation (possibly true speculation, but speculation nonetheless) about whether this has happened before.

Well, it's common sense, really ... if anyone believed the NFL hadn't seen the elevator video prior to Monday, I've got a giant lake in the middle of Arizona to sell them. (The league's original story never held water in the first place, considering they said that they had been working with the New Jersey State Police -- NJSP doesn't handle casino investigations. Any inquiry would have been handled by Atlantic City PD.)

I've spoken to a few friends who work in the field in the past few days (licensed social workers, that is), and all of them have said essentially the same thing: The statistics on rehabilitation and recidivism for serious domestic violence offenders are very, very bad, and not a single one of them believed that this was an isolated incident or the first time that Rice had laid hands on Janay.

Oh, no one I talked to believed it was the first time either. However, that's just a gut instinct. A first domestic assault incident doesn't necessarily look any different from a second.

I thought it was plausible the NFL hadn't seen the second video. I thought if that was the case, it was willful blindness, though. But I could have seen them taking no effort to locate it and hoping it would never surface. It's clear the police had the video, though, along with the prosecution and defense attorneys.

I don't think Roger Goodell will survive this, although his bosses may just hope that this all goes away.
"Look! Shiny! Great matchups this week! Peyton Manning is such a great guy!"

So how much you want to bet the next thing is "Our office received it but it was never given to Goodell"?

It was "lost" or some flunkie "accidentally" taped Dancing With the Stars over it...

The NFL's backpedaling is getting almost as hilarious as the Bush administration's rapidly changing justifications for invading Iraq.

Except that it isn't really funny, is it? People are calling for Goodell to resign, and that's exactly what I think he should do. His entire tenure as NFL Commissioner has been wrought with controversy, so much so that Paul Tagliabue had to clean up after him during the bounty hearings of 2012. The thing is, who cleans up this mess once Goodell is gone?

So now they're bringing in a former FBI Director to try and untangle this mess.

The league, through a statement by spokesman Greg Aiello, said former FBI director Robert S. Mueller III has been hired to investigate the league's handling of the domestic violence incident with Rice, a running back who was cut by the Ravens on Monday. Two NFL owners, John Mara of the Giants and Art Rooney of the Steelers, will oversee the investigation, the Associated Press said.

You know you've fucked up pretty badly when they go to these lengths.

Goodell should just resign and get it over with.

I'm sure Mueller will conduct a completely independent, transparent investigation of the man who hired him.

If you have to appoint special counsel five hours after news breaks in order to stem people calling for your head, it’s time to hang it up. Sports Illustrated is even calling for Goodell's resignation, and SI is the biggest NFL shill in the world, with ESPN not far behind. When you've lost your two biggest media outlets, you have problems.

Goodell is a dirtbag, he's likely known Rice cold-clocked his wife unconscious and into an elevator railing and then callously drug her limp body out of an elevator car like she a sack of potatoes since April. Gives Rice a slap on the wrist, a slightly harder slap on the wrist in the light of public outrage and then finally does something when the truth catches up with him.

What an utter piece of shit, though not as big of a piece of shit as Rice. He should be fired and the NFL should take a serious look at itself in the mirror to see what it's willing to "allow" to take place behind the curtain in the name of protecting one of their "stars."
