NFL 2014-2015 Season Discussion

Obviously my statement was not an absolute one. I can't say for sure that it was not an isolated incident. But in general, people who make excuses for violence are people who are accustomed to it. And also in general, people who would hit their wife in a public place are people who see it as routine, and someone who hit their wife for the first time in a fit of anger would be shocked at themselves and check how she was doing before dragging her out.

The excuse the commissioner is making on TV is "It was described to me, and he envisioned a less criminal scenario in his head".

My instinct here is, he had it described to him and then satisfied with his interpretation did not bother to look at the video thinking it would just confirm his mental image.

My only point is people who make excuses for those who hit them make the same excuses the first time. If they didn't, they would have left when the person hit them the first time. It's their ability to rationalize being hit that allows them to stay.

The thing is, who cleans up this mess once Goodell is gone?

--Sran

Is there a modern day equivalent of Kenesaw Mountain Landis out there?

Such a person probably wouldn't be hired anyway.

Maybe Mueller could use the opportunity if he knocked the investigation out of the park, and if he were so inclined.

This makes sense to me. However, some might characterize what you write above as "victim blaming". A San Francisco sports broadcaster was suspended for a few games for speculating about (among other things) how Janay could have married a man who once put her lights out. BTW, I didn't actually hear any of his comments, just read about what he said.

If Rice were to hit her again, assuming he hasn't already, I think it would be cruel to say to her that it was her fault for staying iwth him, but would any of us not thik that, at least a little bit? "Responsibility" is different from "blame" isn't it?

I'm not remotely blaming the victim nor did I defend Ray Rice's actions in what I wrote above. I said we don't know how many times he hit her, nothing more nothing less (my only point was that the evidence he had done it before doesn't really make any sense). It's tragic that victims of domestic abuse will often make excuses for their abuser, but that doesn't at all mitigate the actions of the abuser.

So, Adrian Peterson? And that happened in May. Has NOT been the NFL's week...

At this point, I'm pretty sure their PR guys are guzzling Maalox and praying that some new NBA owner is revealed as a horrible racist or Derek Jeter ate a live infant on camera or something.

Didn't the whole NBA Owner thing also happen this week and that seemed to take a back seat to the NFL so maybe that whole thing doesn't work.

This has been as dark a week for the NFL as I can remember.

Rae Carruth and Donte' Stallworth literally killed people, and Ray Lewis was involved in a double-homicide the night of the Super Bowl, so (unfortunately) the league has seen far worse.

Did those things happen in the same week though? Those are really bad, and you can add Hernandez to that list too, but this has been like a Quadruple Punch of really bad that the NFL has received all this week.

This was pre-Goodell, but Leonard Little killed a woman while drunk, then had another DUI a few years later, and there were no NFL-related consequences at all.

I almost wonder if the NFL created precedents that they would respond to these things when they could have gotten away with just leaving it for the criminal justice system.

Letting the legal system deal with things might have been the best way to go. But didn't putting personal conduct clauses in contracts sort of gum up the works?

Of course, that's absolutely part of it. Now the NFL just looks hypocritical when they don't respond or when they respond too softly. They're forced to defend the conduct of something that isn't defensible in order to defend their actions.

On the other hand, maybe it was an inevitability. It's probably accurate to say it's a byproduct of star power and the success of the NFL. As long as you're supposed to care for players individually and root for them, whether or not they do scummy things kinda matters in determining whether you'd support them.

I don't care at all about the Chiefs, but they got hosed by a couple of calls. Certainly that Two Minute Warning one.

The Cowboys offensive philosophy is changing before our very eyes. Romo wasn't a turnover machine today but he still concerns me. He is making throws he can usually make with his eyes closed look difficult. Something is definitely wrong with him. One bright spot so far has been Rolando McClain. He has easily been the best defender the last couple of weeks. If he keeps his nose clean he will end up being a pretty nice find.

Also, the Saints aren't doing their road reputation any favors out there.

Always good to see the Niners shit the bed.

:techman:

My brother-in-law and my niece (die hard Bears fans) went to that game. Got a lot of fun texts last night...

Charles Tillman is out for the season with a torn triceps, making an already suspect Bears secondary have to deal without its best cornerback. This likely ends Tillman's career in Chicago.

Ugh.
