New TV series?

I'm going watching for a press release from Paramount in the next few weeks. If they want to move fast they will announce they are working a new series soon.

Paramount CANNOT make a new series. CBS holds the TV rights, and Les Moonives will not allow a new Trek series no matter what.

No kidding everyone in this thread is acting like a new series is inevitable. But that fact is Paramount and CBS will learn from past mistakes. A Star Trek TV Show wouldn't bring in people like to movie did. People who aren't fan would just think oh god they are doing that again. I think its a lot easier to to get people to go to the movies with friends than to get people to set aside time every week to sit down and watch a TV show at a certain time. TV is less social than a movie. and we probably won't see a new series for a long long time if we ever see one at all.

That doesn't include a cartoon which I totally see as being a logical step from a business point of view. First they've already got a template that worked The Clone Wars on top of that if they can get kids interested in a Star Trek Cartoon chances are when Star Trek 2 comes out they can convince mommy and daddy to take them to the movie.

^ I think that its been pretty well established that a cartoon is unlikely. Though I wouldn't have minded the proposed one from a few years ago.

How so?

As far as the cartoon from a few years ago, I think CBS wanted to wait for this movie before they did anything why take a risk on something when some else (Paramount) is willing to do it for you. Which is why I think a cartoon is more likely now than a few years ago. Also from a business stand point it makes sense.

I'd like to see Countdown as a 3D Animated TV Show like Clone Wars (with some continuity errors fixed of course). I think it would tie in nicely with the new movie.

I'd have to agree with the posters who think a new series would be a cartoon. And personally I think they'd be insane not to do it. I'm not sure about the timeline of them doing the toon (i.e. between movies, after the signed trilogy, etc). But, I think their best bet would be to do a kids cartoon a la Clone Wars, or aiming even younger. Those big feet toon characters have to be used for something...

Its possible said cartoon may not give a damn about cannon.

I was thinking that, and also that it would be a good thing.

Let star trek have a kids show for a while, something like Star Gate Infinity or Highlander cartoon. Not canon , not too serious, not to be confused with the new movies, and certainly not for grown ups. Why not?

We still have the new film inspite of VOY and ENT, a kids show could be what trek needs to drop the illusions of greatness and elitism held by some fans as assets.

In theory I should be wanting a new series but just can't get excited by that right now. Another film definitely.

Anything that makes trek mainstream and distanced from the zealots can only be good.

Re: So will a new TV series be in the works?

I have no doubt that this film and the success of future films will amount toward generating interest in another series. But not just yet. I think for now too many people (especially the new fans that have been gained from the current film) have a built up idea of what Star Trek should be. In this case, too many people will be expecting the epic budgets and special effects you see on the silver screen.

What will make Star Trek successful again is showing how it can be versatile in the sense of story style, characterisation and mood. I think that's something they will be going for in future films. As terrific as this film was, I think more story substance will need to fill in those gaps of action next time around. That was the difference between Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace: CR had some good action scenes but wasn't what I call "action heavy". A great deal of it was character development and plot. QOS was more about spectacle which is why people seem to prefer CR above QOS. This isn't a trap Star Trek wants to fall into. Let's see what else these characters have to offer...especially Scotty as Simon Pegg didn't get anywhere near as much time on screen as I was expecting.

Re: So will a new TV series be in the works?

Wasn't there talk a while back about a show set at the Academy?

Re: So will a new TV series be in the works?

I think you'll need to see a few more successful movies in this timeline before a new TV show sees the light of day. We are at the beginning again in more ways than one and the studio will need to see that the new version has longevity, irresepctive of any short term success.

Re: So will a new TV series be in the works?

* I hope for a tv series. Only movies is too little to tell great histories.

Re: So will a new TV series be in the works?

I think something people may be realizing is that another ship, another crew with the title "Star Trek" is not necessarily that.

Star Trek (successful Star Trek, inspired Star Trek) might just be Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, and Checkov. They get lucky sometimes-- TNG, DS9 because of great new characters. But just plopping a new show out with the name on it along with Klingons and Vulcans isn't going to cut it anymore.

Star Trek may be Kirk, Spock, and McCoy now, again, and for a long time. And if those guys don't want to be on TV, I don't know if we'll get a new show.

That said, I always prefer having a weekly TV show to having to wait two-three years for a new movie, even if the movie is really good.

Re: So will a new TV series be in the works?

I just hope if they make a new series that I won't be about the Kirk. The movie is good, but all in all the era is very dry and I would prefer something set in the post DS9 era.

I feel different. I think the post DS9 era got very dull over the years...

I don't think a new TV show is a great idea right away.

Re: So will a new TV series be in the works?

I think it's WAY too soon for yet another television series. I'd wait at least a full 10 years after the end of Enterprise, until 2015.

Re: So will a new TV series be in the works?

I've been debating this thought for a while - but maybe a movie only franchise would give the whole series more "oomph" makes each chapter more of an event, if they were to go and recast the movie crew for a weekly show... it might dillute what they started, since a tv show would take a lot to be anywhere close to as badass as the movie was.

Unless they go the animated route where as long as they get the original voices it works out, do a well animated series maaaybe that could work. But I think what Trek needs is what Star Wars had, and that was some anticipation for the next chapter, that was filled in in the between with novels, comics, video games and maybe the odd animated thing.

Star Wars had only 3 movies until 1999 and look at how beloved it became

Re: So will a new TV series be in the works?

I think at this point, the best thing to do would be to quietly cancel all sequel plans and let Star Trek rest in peace.
