New TV series?

There's no way the movie actors would agree to do a television series. The television series would have to follow another crew, and would not grab the majority of the new fans of the movie.

While some would argue that a series would enrich the movies, I'd argue that it would cheapen and constrain them.

I think that after 2 sequels we'll see a spinoff TV series. It will start strong, but gradually erode and have many Voyager-esque plots.

That whole "Three years later" thing leaves the door open for the long talked and ridiculed about academy series/movie. It wouldn't be too 90210y as Kirk was 25ish and Bones was 35ish ya'know.

I had been looking forward to a new series, but only if it wasn't crap. You can sell me on the limited series/no series idea.

With TNG, the announcement came after they'd been producing the films for a while, and the success of The Voyage Home sealed it. I expect there will be another series at some point, as it's going to have an audience (especially if you take into account TiVo and on-demand, which weren't considered at the time of Enterprise's cancellation) and if found the right home could be quite successful.

I think the time isn't right, however. Let the films re-establish Trek with some credibility and do it when you can come up with a good new story concept, rather than a rushed out cash in.

They could go the opposite route of the original series and do three movies, then a TV series that takes place in what was once the movie era. Could it happen? Would the movie cast be willing to do television? Some of them already do, and if the rest have a movie career slowdown, then who knows. Plus there isn't much of a stigma attached to doing TV anymore. Only a handful of actors these days only do movies.

That's my bit of wishful thinking and hopeful speculation.

I don't know if JJ would be interested in running the new franchise, but it would have to be him, or someone with his new viewpoint on Trek to do it.
Maybe Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof who do Lost can take on Trek.

If you asked me a couple years ago for a new trek series, I would have said hell yeah. But now, I saw wait till after the 3rd movie before starting the process. And when they do we gotta get some fresh ideas, I know after 700 hours of trek its going to be hard.

I think it’s all but inevitable that Paramount will want to get a new (reboot) TV series on the air as soon as possible.

No freaking way. Finish off the current trilogy before even thinking about a new TV series. Keep the fans hungry!

That's really the only way to do it. Trek fans need to understand that we're not going to get another series that requires the kind of insane intimate knowledge of the Star Trek universe that we all have... these movies are the best thing that could have happened to Trek and they need to stay divorced from that.

I don't think there's going to be a series any time soon. They should wait a few years for the technology and then do a quality CGI Trek series. But please, please, please Paramount, no more "spinoffs" about Captain Alexander Harris of the U.S.S. Exeter or Captain Beauregard SAnchez of the Federation timeship Destiny. Nobody cares. Star Trek is Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise. No more debasing Star Trek with endless silly spinoffs.

A different crew, maybe some crossover actors and a mini-series output with just a handful of epic episodes.

Nobody will sit still for run-of-the-mill episodes with a handful of 'big' episodes per season.

It would have to be an event.

So will a new TV series be in the works?

Or will they stick to movies only for a while?

If you think there will be a new series, will it be with this cast or will they have to go in some other direction?

Re: So will a new TV series be in the works?

By "They", I assume you're speaking of Paramount Pictures?

Well, "They" don't own the television rights to Trek, so if there is a new Trek series, "They" won't have anything to do with it.

The television rights to Trek are owned by CBS/Paramount, which despite the word "paramount" in the name, is actually a wholly separate company.

With Trek proving itself on the big screen, you can bet that CBS will be exploiting their television rights to that property to their own advantage. They pretty much have to, as failure to exploit such a hot property would put them in a bad graces with their shareholders. But again, as a separate company, with none of the movie principles under contract, any series that CBS undertakes will be a spin off with only partial overlap with the new films.

Re: So will a new TV series be in the works?

For me, Star Trek has always been more enjoyable as a series than the movies which are mostly about flashy effects and sound. The real character and plot development are really the best Star Trek.

It depends what the series will be about.

^ Keep the seasons short might be a good idea.
I agree with that. I really think that we should be moving toward 13 episode seasons with say two quarters of new episodes for example:

Quarter 1: Jan, Feb, Mar
Quarter 2: Apr, May, Jun
Quarter 3: Jul, Aug, Sep
Quarter 4: Oct, Nov, Dec

Though that was what I theorized. As I said earlier (second post in this thread) I think they should avoid another series so quickly. One of the problems that led to the end of Trek Prime - in my opinion - was oversaturation. There had been so many seasons of Trek that people just sort of lost interest except for diehard fans. Trek became ultranerdy and people made fun of them - I've said the story already about my friend who was the Quarterback and saw Nemesis and was suddenly a pariah. I think a new series so quickly would take us right back into that trap. A new series should come (no earlier than) 2015.

I think it’s all but inevitable that Paramount will want to get a new (reboot) TV series on the air as soon as possible. They will want to strike while the iron is hot and capitalize on Trek's new popularity.

Isn't going to happen. They won't go near television as long as people are willing to pay to see Star Trek in the theaters.
