Looks like they're going with the three-button thing that TOS did on the tricorder (and the communicator for that matter) which also influenced later models.

So the iPhone 7 got rid of the earphone jack, but it looks like this has three of them (to the left of the display)

We can assume from the uniform shots that this Tricorder is a clunky thing ... it's possible the design isn't as solid as the other props and marketing realizes we won't be gushing over it as much.

Always assume the worst. It helps avoid disappointment.

Well it looks slimmer and the level of detail on the screen is nice...for what little we saw of it, that's disappointing.

Maybe because it is bulkier they want to limit that reveal.

Looks a lot like the TOS Tricorder and Scanner set. The Scanner still seems to be a small cylinder with the little grooves in it (just they're lit now), and the Tricorder still has the box display, three buttons, and the overall box shape with the overhead lip on it. So far the props have huge throws to TOS.

I kind of feel the same way, too, but, as Kemaiku points out, there might be strong, technical reasons to keep them separate. Also, there was a trend in the '60s and '70s to combine televisions and stereos into one cabinet. They were bulky (because of the large cathode-ray tubes used for the TV), but looked nice. For a variety of reasons, the trend died out, to be replaced with discrete components connected with a tangled rat's nest of wires.

I have little doubt, though, that by now the tricorder can be expected to interface with a communicator to send back its readings.

Military tech tends toward robust devices with specialized functionality, rather than trying to mash a whole bunch of different capabilities into a single device. The communicator thread already discussed how Trek communicators are absolutely not analogous to our civilian consumer-level smartphones.

Star Trek's not ever really going to try to project the future of technology or anything else from what our world is like now and what we have reason to expect. Star Trek will always imitate old Star Trek.

Trek tech works just fine as an extrapolation of present-day military tech, which is nothing like the flashy and gimmicky consumer gadgetry that we are accustomed to in civilian life. Never the twain shall meet.
