New Star Wars Trilogy To be developed by Rian Johnson

Even though he's a Star Wars fan? A lot of things I've read include "Finally, a Star Wars trilogy directed by a Star Wars fan!"

I’m in the "Force-Awakens-is-scene-by-scene-remake-of-A-New-Hope" camp so the thought of Abrams developing a new Star Wars trilogy... :barf:

I’d rather watch Jar Jar Binks: A Star Wars Story.

But hey, maybe Episode IX will make me eat my words.

I'd rather have Abrams' at the helm of Trek, but he's a fine director and has a passion for the product. Since we haven't seen "The Last Jedi" I'm hardly enthusiastic about Johnson's work or "fan credentials." I at least know what I'm getting with Abrams.

^That would actually be cool to see either a Darth Bane film, or a trilogy of films seeing the Star Wars universe from the Sith perspective. You could even have each successive film in the trilogy dealing with a later Sith master, culminating in the final film with Darth Plagueis training a young Palpatine.

Because of what Star Wars is, they can get away with so much and not be called on it really. Unlike Star Trek, which you can flinch and be called out for a canon violation.

Whatever the subject of the next trilogy will be, I'd be shocked if it's based around something as fanservicey as the fall of the Sith/rise of Darth Bane. Maybe as a backdrop to a actual story, but even then I doubt it. I get the distinct impression RJ is eager to get to tell his own story, not continue someone else's or fill in some gap in the existing backstory.

As for the when and where: if they're deliberately avoiding the familiar Skywalker side of things then it really could be anywhere or any when from the dawn of the Old Republic to a century of a millennia *after* the ST. It's wide open.
Depending on the setting and scope, they could even set it contemporary with any of the existing movies without too much hassle. I mean for example I doubt much has changed in the seedy depths of Nar Shaddaa in the last few centuries. Hell, there are probably people in the slums there or even on Coruscant down below level 2000 that had no idea that the Republic ever fell or that the Empire existed at all. Places like that are like a timeless void.

They could theoretically make these movies and deliberately not let on where in the timeline it takes place.

I rather have Abrams focus his energies in creating sci-fi television shows than at the helm of either the Trek or Star Wars franchises.
To each their own :)

I personally am more amused that individuals are excited for Johnson, a "Star Wars fan" but smear Abrams at every opportunity, even though he is a "Star Wars fan."

I just don't get the Abrams' bashing and Johnson praising.

Personally I am super excited for Johnson solely based on his previous work and I’m totally indifferent and impervious to his alleged Star Wars fandom. At the same time I am uninterested in Abrams again only based on his previous work and despite his Star Wars fandom. If Star Wars fandom was the only or most important criteria then Steve Sansweet should direct the next Star Wars film(s).

Then you and I just have different tastes.

There are few directors I would trust with a property, and Abrams is on that short list for me.

If JJ Abrams hadn't insisted on making The Force Awakens specifically to recreate his own personal experiences after watching ANH for the first time in theaters in 1977, ignoring the fact that nobody else really cared, I would have more confidence in him directing Episode 9.Samurai.

Johnson, by all accounts, had no ulterior motives in crafting The Last Jedi, which is why I have more confidence in him and excitement for his ST installment and this new Trilogy.

I know Prequels get a bad rep in movies but I would love to see the movies go back to the old Republic and let us learn more about the origins of Jedi/Sith and the eventual war that lead to the demise of Sith and their order becoming just 1 Master/1 Apprentice.

Me too, like in the KOTOR timeline.
