After having the whole turbo lift discussion, I realized that I never truly gave my thoughts. Overall, I liked it. It was not what I would’ve expected Spock’s first day on the Enterprise to be, but, I’m sure that’s was intentional.

It introduces a fascinating dynamic between Spock and Number One. I, too, got the sense that she was someone who helped him become who he was and, perhaps, even mentored him a bit. I wouldn’t suspect that she was someone who kept a watchful eye over him (perhaps in the beginning), but, I get the feeling she specifically chose Spock for the Enterprise because she saw something very special in him.

If a Pike series came to pass, I think I’d want it to start at this point and not post-season 2 of Discovery. I’d love to see Spock’s earliest days on the Enterprise, how that evolved over time, and where he fits in within the relationship between Pike and Number One; it could be something a little different when compared with Kirk and McCoy.

I get the impression that Number One intended to give a whirlwind first impression to the "new meat" on the ship, some solid senior officer advice and then get to work.

Then she ends up spending hours in the turbolift with him and they are forced to spend a lot more time bonding than she ever intended.

It's an "ironic hell" because she pressed him to open up more, never expecting to have to open up this much.

What I liked the most about her is that she strongly encouraged Spock to ask questions until they would leave the turbolift for the bridge, and even if that interval of time for questions became much, much longer than she could have known, and Spock was clearly exhausting her a bit with his incessant barrage, she never told him to stop. She never went back on her giving him leave to ask whatever he thought of and did her best to answer him to the best of her ability. I can easily see any other first officer shutting that down as soon as it became inconvenient.

You try spending several hours with another hot-blooded being in an enclosed space and not having to loosen up tight fitting clothing eventually.
(I got caught in an elevator once with two other people for almost three hours, after the first 90 minutes it got pretty hot and stuffy in there)

Why not? It's a classic visual shorthand of relaxing, unbuttoning or loosening the tie.

There's still an argument over how much of a straight military organization Starfleet is, although it's become more militaristic as the franchise progressed than the original exploration type premise I think.

All you've pointed out is that what she does isn't illegal, and I never said it was. It's just not my thing, and probably not a lot of other people's either. Like you said, she's in command so whatever she says goes, but they don't have to like her outside of that, i.e. Jellico.

All through TOS and especially after the Fed/Dominion War in DS9 - you can put said argument to bed. Starfleet IS the Military of the Federation hands down despite what GR loved to try and claim post TOS.

I can't believe I forgot this scene, it disturbed me at the time. What were the writers thinking? If the genders had been reversed, Number One would have been thrown into the brig as a MeToo predator.

Like look at the context of the entire scene, not everything should be explained to you.

It probably didn't have to do with the environment, but the rest of the scene shows it wasn't what you think.

The turbolift was broken down, perhaps the thermostat was buggered up too?

On the other hand, if turbolifts, transporters, and zippers are the worst anyone can come up with, that just shows they delivered a winner with "Q&A".

I do wonder if the intent was to make you think she was going to hit on Spock for a smidge - to try to knock your expectations off-kilter before something else entirely happened.

My thought was for a while was that Number One had the turbolift stalled on purpose so she could find out more about Spock.

If Number One was interested in Spock, that would've come across too much like Star Trek's version of The Graduate. An Ensign who recently graduated from the Academy and a woman in her 30s or 40s, one step away from being Captain.

Anyway, I think I should clarify what prompted my response. Someone taking an unnecessary dig at "Me Too". Not you. That's the point where I was like, "Okay. That's enough. I'm weighing in."
