New Series?? Report from Deadline

Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

Please no JJ Trek in series. Why do they have to to this? (Yes, I have read the text but I don't believe it). I hope it will turn to out to be a joke.

edit: I should have quoted this one here at the top:

The howls from the folks who hate the Abrams films should be delicious!

I wouldn't even dream to suggest this is a forgone conclusion, but I would assume this would be set in the Abramsverse?

My guess is it will be set in the Abrams universe but with a different ship. I'd like to see the adventures of Matt Decker of the USS Constellation with the series finale a Doomsday Machine remake...perhaps with a totally different outcome. This time Decker manages to save his crew but sacrifices himself and his ship in the process. Maybe the Enterprise could show up in a cameo role....or better yet, is destroyed by the Doomsday Machine! :techman:

Just so I'm not missing anything, we're still all just assuming it'll be Abrams universe based on who's producing it? There's no confirmation there?

It's a little vague but the article on startrek.com says:

The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016

That could simply mean it won't use the same characters. It doesn't say it's not part of that continuity.

I'm just glad to get Star Trek back in the format it's supposed to be in. I'm considered as a non-American (Canadian here) where I'll be able to watch this show.

Then again if CBS doesn't have the rights to use anything from the Abramsverse that could put a new wrinkle on things.

While there are things I've enjoyed in the films I agree Star Trek is best served on television where it can do the many kinds of stories and explore many kinds of ideas the way it was conceived to do.

And when I think of Star Trek at its best it has always been on television.

^Why wouldn't they have the rights?

So as I understand it, CBS owns Star Trek. They licensed the movie rights to Paramount. That is why Paramount made the movies.

I have no idea what that means vis-a-vis CBS being able to use the ideas from the movies in their tv shows.

^Why wouldn't they have the rights?
I don't know. I was under the understanding that previously CBS didn't have the rights to the Abrams' films and their content. Maybe they've ironed that out or not. I'm simply thinking aloud that if CBS doesn't have the rights to the Abramsverse then they would have to do something else of their own making.

At this point, without further details, it's murky and no one knows.

I would think as CBS licenses the rights to Paramount to make the films, CBS can do whatever they want in regards to a TV series.

But you're right, it is way too early to tell.
