    It isn't cannibalism, jeeze.

Cannibalism is the act of eating something of the same species. Klingons and Humans are not the same species.

Quite right. Just as a human eating an octopus (or vice versa) isn't cannibalism. It's simple predation, nothing more.

I hope everyone is as concerned with the large lapses in the show's writing and logic as they are the imprecise use of "cannibalism."

In all seriousness, is there a shorthand term to describe a sentient species eating another sentient species that is more apt?

    It's just called eating.

I think conflating eating the same species and eating "sentient beings" is happening.
    It certainly is with me.
Also really gross. And disturbing. I want to eat neither.

Sometimes the language we have must suffice. "Cannibalism," here, is much more descriptive, if admittedly not quite right. The readers can choose whether their level of pedantry will allow them to take my (easily understood, I think) meaning.

What a load of bullshit.

Yep - that hairsplitting is more of the same. It's cannibalism.

Words tend to change their meaning through the ages. Thus, in the fantasy world of the future, where Humans live side by side with bipedal humanoid sentient aliens, the term "cannibalism" is quite applicable to eating of Kelpiens, Vulcans, Romulans, etc. Come on, you can have a baby with a Romulan or Klingon*. So, if you eat them, you're one hundred percent cannibal.

Science Vs. Faith will never lose it's relevance. It's a vitally important discussion to have particularly today where we continue to see creationism pushed in schools and people believing in nonsense like the flat earth theory.

Personally i want an episode next season where the crew visits a planet with a species in crisis due to their young all dying from ingesting laundry detergent as part of an inane ritual called 'the tide pod challenge'

The show uses modern day terminology so the audience can understand.

Respectfully, it's a bit of a leap to group people who have some form of faith in with people who believe the world is flat.

Indeed and I wasn't intending on lumping people together. I'm not saying that people who believe in creationism also believe in flat-earth theory and vice versa. Personally, I've known more than a few christians who were able to balance their faith with scientific truths quite ably. I should have prefaced my original comment by saying that in my view Science vs. Faith doesn't necessarily mean Science vs Religious Faith. Most Anti-Science movements, originate from a place of faith, usually the faith that ones own instincts, experience and degrees from google university are more valuable than the views of scientific authorities. Take Anti-Vaxxers for example, one of their main values is the faith that Mothers intrinsically know what is best for their children and the opinion of a person who has spent a decade studying medicine should be ignored.

The point I was trying to make is that there are people in this world who ignore basic proven scientific facts because of faith whether it be religious or non-religious and the two examples that came to mind were creationism and the belief in the flat earth theory and because of this, the discussion of Science vs. Faith is still relevant and worthy of exploration in trek. .
