New Picard SDCC Trailer

I had no idea this trailer was coming, so watched it this morning with zero expectations. I literally let out squeals at both the Seven and Data Reveals. Then I burst into tears and went into my partner saying "Seven and Data are in it" and blubbing like a baby.

Maybe it's not that they "did not get it right." Maybe they actively chose to do something a little bit different than they'd done in the past, to make Spiner's character feel a little more artificial.

That's not different than the decision to lower and slightly modify Michael Dorn's voice in Nemesis to make Worf sound more "alien," IMO.

Which could mean "June"

They're most of the way through shooting the series now (up through Episode 7, IIRC). Discovery was still filming its final episodes both seasons when the first episodes were being broadcast, but it's unlikely this will happen for Picard. I guess they just need more time in postproduction for VFX and the like.

I find Jeri more attractive now than I did in Voyager. Perhaps it has something to do with Seven acting and looking more human than ever.

Watched the trailer again. Honestly, still getting "Gambit" vibes which I can't shake (I really dislike that episode), but I think I'll be very interested in the setting details. I want to see the vineyard, new Starfleet. I'm curious about the girl, but could do without her "fighting skillz"...I've had enough of that with Terminator and River Tam, Taken, Bourne and others. I'd LOVE her to be Lal, but she's not Lal. She's probably connected to that reformed Borg colony or whatever it is.

I hope we do at least get to see inside a Starfleet ship. I want to see how they've redesigned the 24th century aesthetic. And...are those Romulans?

The look and aesthetic of the "ship" locations and such too me just looked too much like it was out of Discovery. Dark, mostly gray, huge empty spaces and lens flares, got to have them lens flares! Then there's the Disovery Spock-looking Vulcan guy we saw.

The look of it all didn't click with me. It doesn't look one bit like Star Trek.

Well, it looks like "new" Star Trek, which I don't like the look of as it looks like every other piece of Sci-Fi out there. Dark, grey and LENS FLARES!!!!

The reason it doesn't "look" like that is because it is no longer 1993. That's like hating on The Motion Picture because it doesn't look like TOS.

Right.

I think we’re simply seeing 30 years of advancements in style and cinematography.

The cinematography we saw 90s Trek was based on Berman and David Livingston’s appreciation of Marvin Rush’s work on a short-lived 80s comedy called Frank’s Place. I don’t mention this to take anything away from Rush or the look of 90s Trek but it was a product of its time. One can see the evolution of Rush’s style in Hell on Wheels. In fact, if Rush had been hired for _Picard_ I'm sure he would've executed the showrunner's direction flawlessly. Today, Rush works on The Orville which is a clear homage to 90s Trek. Picard seems to be going for the prestige TV set so I don’t think we should expect it to look like TNG.

Thank God.

That's a good thing and a bad thing. The "lens flares", super-fast directing style and choppy editing really take away from simply enjoying the show and actually noticing the little details. But I've felt that way since around the time of Star Trek 2009. Not factoring in the sets, The Orville is filmed in a much more enjoyable style without feeling dated.

That said I really enjoyed the trailer and am excited for the unexpected appearances.

This looks to be fantastic. But I preferred the late 2019 premiere date to now early 2020 mentioned in the trailer. Can't wait.

I'm sure it will resemble the universe we last saw Picard in. It hasn't been that long. This isn't like a reimagining.
I just hope they don't have floating transparent holographic control panels.

No more holographic control panels please!
