New Frontier: Turnabout #5 (spoilers)

I wasn't very impressed with this, it just seemed to fizzle out, like he's come up with the premise and then couldn't think of an ending.

In additional, how come the mirror universe alliance was shown as having "modern" Star Fleet ships ?

More like he was setting up for the next "New Frontier" text-based stories..., or the next IDW mini-series.

I didn't mind this issue, but the art and pace of #4 was probably the best.

Re: New Frontier 5

I was disappointed with number 5 as well. Actually the whole series. The first two issues were promising, but after that it started falling apart and then fizzled out. A predictable, boring ending. PAD's starting to let me down. I did'nt care of Before Dishonor, and now Turnaround. I'm not going to be standing in line for the next NF novel.

Even though I thought Missing in Action was pretty good. I haven't been that much into NF since the Excalibur trilogy. When they added the Trident's crew and then the space station, there's too many characters and the series seemed bogged down. Perhaps NF has just lost its freshness for me.

That's nice - but we live in a tight economy where I expect some bang in this series not in the next one or a book. I'll not be picking up the next mini-series on this basis.

Slow comics are dead comics.

Re: New Frontier 5

it'd be a help if you'd identified this as being about the comics. i thought you were referring to the novel...

Well, I got plenty of NF bangs for my bucks with "Turnaround". My only main concern was imagining how anyone who had no familiarity with PAD's recent NF books understanding what was going on. While I personally enjoyed seeing Morgan, Arex and M'Ress - and a Mirror Universe incarnation of McHenry - these characters must have presented new readers with many WTF moments. :guffaw:

I guess if you hear some amazingly positive reviews of the next mini-series, there's always volume 2 of the trade reprint...

Geez Ian, that's not saying much! I thought the 4th issues was "so:so" at the most!!
I waiting for my copy of the 5th to arrive.

Re: New Frontier 5

Good thing I bailed after issue #2. Still, I'll take a look at the TPB and will probably be tempted to get it. But the last couple of NF books have been "meh" and this was no different.

Re: New Frontier 5

I haven't read issue 5 yet, but so far I've actually been fairly happy with the series. My only real complaint is I thought he spent a little to much time setting things up.

Re: New Frontier 5

My issue finally arrived the other day, much later than usual which had me worrying. Anyways, I enjoyed the conclusion, although some of the art was a bit shaky. My only complaint is we don't find out what happened to Morgan other than Xy not knowing.

Overall, the series was a lot of fun with some great character moments. Plus, it was good to see the whole crew in comic form again (particularly M'Ress and Arex) plus the newcomers like Xy, Lucius, Desma, and Morgan (unobscured this time). I'll probably read the whole thing again in a few days to get a better feel of the story, but I thought it was pretty good.

Same here.

Yeah, I also think anyone who bought this mini-series who had only a passing familiarity with "New Frontier" novels would have been very confused. WildStorm's "NF: Double Time" was a more self-contained, enjoyable ST story that would have appealed to many regular ST fans and comics readers.

I'm assuming the "Where's Morgan?" cliffhanger in "Turnaround" is meant to have us eagerly awaiting the next instalment of NF, in whichever form (novel, novella, short story, comic arc) happens to come along next. But for newer readers - still wondering why Number One of "The Cage" and Arex and M'Ress of TAS are even in the 24th century - it's not likely to be something they can hope to have explained by the next mini-series. (I'm not sure it would make them race back to the books either, although maybe the NF: "No Limits" short story anthology, if they can find it, would help, at least with Morgan and Arex's origins.)

I'll probably read the whole thing again in a few days to get a better feel of the story.

Me too. And my trade reprint omnibus is on pre-order.

Re: New Frontier 5

I'm guessing Morgan is dead. PAD said in interviews that one of the New Frontier cast would die in the course of the series, and everyone else is accounted for at the end.

Re: New Frontier 5

Hm, I remember that interview and noticed that no one had died (I kept fearing either Shelby or Mueller would bite it, with a brief moment of fear for Soleta), but I didn't think about Morgan. If that's true, then I hope that the next book covers her death with proper mourning and all.

Oh, I'd forgotten that. I guess the story was a warning of what happens when "spreading yourself too thin". I remember when Morgan was appearing in several places simultaneously, and almost boasting about it, that maybe it wasn't such a good idea.

Should this thread now have "SPOILERS" warnings?
