New Doctor to be revealed on Sunday

They're probably doing it because so many people already know, the tabloids would get a leak before Christmas. Better to do it on their own terms I guess.

If it is Capaldi, one wonders when they will stop casting roles from within the show. First Freema Agyeman, then Karen Gillan, that girl who plays Clara's charge (who was also in Let's Kill Hitler) and now(?) Capaldi.

Colin Baker was on the show prior to becoming the Doctor. Lalla Ward played Princess Astra and later Romana. So it's not like this is limited to the revived series.

All the more reason, then. I'm not saying that all of those weren't good choices, but it makes me wonder if they have a limited casting scope.

Not as bad as Star Trek was, though.

When they like an actor's work they tend to cast them. There are a lot of actors who have found steady employment because casting directors like them and place them at the top of the list. I doubt Who or Trek are all that different than other shows.

^^Tim Russ auditioned for Geordi and lost out to Levar Burton, then played a terrorist in TNG before getting the role of Tuvok on VOY...

If Peter Capldi gets in, I'd actually consider not watching anymore. He just seems a bad choice.

I'd stick around for his first episode and see if he's any good. If not, I might consider waiting until he regenerates.

Whoever is announced, we "bloody Yanks" will learn of it at the same time as those in the UK.

BBC America will air the same special that BBC One presents tomorrow. It appears it will be "simu-cast" meaning it will air 2 PM EDT (Eastern DayLights Saving). I don't know how it will handle commercial breaks since the BBC 1 feed won't have any.

Sincerely,

Bill

There's not a chance that the next Doctor won't be young and attractive. That's what the character is now and the BBC won't want to risk chasing off the new viewers that change has brought them.
Hmmmm...Matt Smith does a great job as The Doctor, IMHO, and that portrayal gives him a certain attraction, but, physical good looks is non-existent on my list of descriptions for him. He has no distinct features. Tennant, while too skinny for my tastes, was indeed physically good looking, but, Smith certainly isn't IMHO.
I agree with you. But I personally know five women who think Matt Smith is the cutest thing since Adonis. They can't get enough of him. "He's so HOT!" etc.

I don't get it at all.
But, did they think that before getting to know his character (IE: Did they look at his picture and think he's hot, or did they fall in lust with him after they got to know his performance?)

Its like with benedict Cumberbatch; they probably wouldn't look at him twice in a bar but put him on TV and give him a role that highlights his intellect and wit, give them a chance to get used to his unusual looks and suddenly he's sex on toast.

Benedict Cucumberpatch is an acquired taste, like Matt Smith. Neither of them will float everyone's boat the way someone more conventionally good looking such as Christopher Eccleston. I fail to see what it adds to the conversation when one person says "he's sex on toast" and someone else says "no he isn't he's horrible". I realise that on the scale of pettiness that some DW arguments get into, this is small beer.

^Thats interesting that you say 'conventionally good-looking like Eccleston.' I wouldn't have thought of him as good-looking either. Eye of the beholder and all that.

As Paul Merton once put it, when asked if he was an unlikely sex symbol: "What's so unlikely about it? I'm on TV regularly, have a good gag writer and still have a pulse, that's enough to make anyone a sex symbol."

Excited to see Peter Capaldi buzz is so high. Been listing him as my perfect casting idea for The Doctor since 2009.

Well, I'm not a car ride from the studio so I'm fairly certain it isn't me...
Shame, really, because I would make a great Doctor with my middle aged body and 14 year old personality. Of course it would have helped my chances considerably if I had auditioned - always forgetting the important things...

James Hawes who directed "The Empty Child" among others has Tweeted that he knows who it is and it's not a name he'd have guessed.

So the bookies won't be losing their shirts over Capaldi then. (Cue someone saying he's lying about not guessing the name to throw people off...)
