NBA Discussion - The Stretch Run

Celtics finally drop one at home...this should get interesting.

I still think Pistons in 6.
All of the speculation about the Celts possibly becoming the first team to win an NBA championship without winning a road game was predicated upon the presumption that they would win all their home games.

Whoops!

WOW!!!

Let me start by acknowledging that yes the Spurs could come back and win the series, yes they're the world champs, etc. etc.

But seriously...that was a beat down of epic proportions. The Lakers just pounded the crap out of San Antonio tonight. Ginobili looked totally lost out there. And Parker should join the union, laying bricks like that. Odom had a really nice game tonight.

Still a lot of basketball to be played, but that was something else tonight. So, I'm going to enjoy it for a bit.

GO LAKERS!!

I'm glad you said that first because the series now shifts to San Antonio and the Spurs are dangerous at home. Right now, I think they are reeling after what happened in game one, so if they win at least one at home, it's a brand new series. If they win both games at home, they have all the momentum in the world. Game 3 becomes all the more important.

Yeah, they could, but the Lakers look really freaking good right now. The way Jackson coaches their offense is going to make it very difficult to stop that team. SA was able to take individual Hornets out of the game (Peja, West, other outside shooters) by tailoring their defense to the unique offensive skills of those players. As a result, they were able to shut down the NOH offense. The Lakers, OTOH, are much more adaptable as their personnel can switch between at least 2-3 different positions within the triangle offense on every possession (i.e. unlike Chandler in NO, Gasol can cycle through the different post and high block positions of the triangle). That's going to make it much more difficult to manipulate the defensive matchups to stop the Lakers as any time they manage to shut one guy down, he can just cycle in to a new position and consequently a different set of offensive skills. Interestingly, of the other three teams remaining, the Celtics look best equipped to slow down the triangle.

Wow...the Celts actually won one on the road, though they tried to blow it in the fourth quarter.

Yes, it was great to finally see them win a road game. I'm not sure who the better team is in this series, but I'm really pulling for a Lakers/Celtics Finals so I hope the Celtics can pull it off.

It was a good W by the Spurs, one they needed desperately. The Lakers have shown the ability to play tough D against better offensive (home) teams than the Spurs during these playoffs and thats what they'll have to do if they expect to end this series in under 7 games.

Game 4 should be intense, well from a Lakers standpoint, I hope it will be intense. :)

YEAH, BABY!!!!

The Lakers almost gave that one away. I was worried after Gasol missed those free throws.

Nice win in San Antonio. We'll take it.

3-1 Good Guys!!!

Pretty suspicious non-call there at the end, but as desperate as I am for a non-Spurs NBA Finals I don't really care.

If barry's shot goes in, the refs did the the Spurs a favor. Barry took a dribble after getting hit, meaning he wouldn't get continuation. If the shot goes in and the refs call the foul like everyone wanted them to do, then they would have to waive off the three and had barry shoot two freethrows. In that scenario the refs just took away three points for the potential for two, and it looks like the Spurs are screwed because the refs called a minor contact foul before a game winning shot.

If you see the play at full speed, it doesn't look like that much contact, and you can't see fishers elbow bump Barry. It was a good non-call to let the players skill determine the outcome. When you consider the amount of contact they've been allowing all game and all series, there's no way they could have expected to get that call, which is pretty much with Barry, Popovich and Duncan said in the post game.

Well, the league office reviewed it and said it was a foul, but this stuff happens. I thought the Spurs were very classy about it. I understand why there was no whistle; the refs don't want to be the ones to decide the game, especially after fiascoes like the 1994 Bulls-Knicks game 5, where a phantom foul call in the closing seconds decided the game (and really, the series).

Much as the Celtics tried to give away the game to the Pistons tonight, they failed. And so it'll go Seven.

Ginobli will have to go supernova for the Spurs to have a chance in L.A. That and Kobe will have to become undisciplined again.

Or maybe it was a make-up for the shot clock error on Fisher's shot. If they had made the right call earlier, the Lakers could have run out the clock or had two free throws because the Spurs would have to foul. Then the Spurs might have been down 3 or 4.

This part isn't getting much press though. In the end, I think it evened out.
