NBA Discussion - The Stretch Run

3-3...Way to go, Hawks!

No matter what happens on Sunday, the Hawks can hold their heads high. They've played their asses off.

Whoo hoo! Home team!

I'm glad the Hawks are giving the Celtics a run. I'm not anti-Celtic but too many people were ready to hand them the championship once they got KG and Allen. If this trade had happened a few years ago, no doubt, it would be them and the Pistons. But the East is finally looking up now.

Word is now out that Kobe will win the MVP. While my personal pick would have been Chris Paul and my sentimental pick LeBron James... I have no problem whatsoever with Kobe winning the award. Frankly, any one of those three would have been worthy of it, but Kobe did it in the tougher division, which speaks mightily to his deserving.

Holy crap! The Hawks forcing a Game 7? The Phillips Center full of cheering fans? Have we slipped into an alternate universe?

Seriously though, I want the Celtics to win this series. I have high hopes for a Celtics-Lakers Finals this year.

I am not interested in the Hawks-Celtics series. I'm a firm believer in the old saying that a series doesn't get interesting until the road team wins a game.

So does David Stern.

But I think this is funny. The Hawks, not even a .500 team, forcing game seven against the 66-win Celtics, the team that everybody penciled in for a championship. This series should have been a sweep. And this isn't comparable to the Warriors/Mavericks matchup last year, because at least the Warriors were a decent team. The Hawks probably won't win game seven, but the Celtics are not going to win a championship this year. And the Pistons again are looking like they're going to fold in the post-season.

The finals this year won't be in any more competitive than they were last year.

And the Pistons again are looking like they're going to fold in the post-season.

Yet they're up 1-0 in the second round already.

I'd love to see the Hawks pull off the upset. I doubt it will happen though. This has all the makings of the series where the underdog hangs around just to get pasted by the favorites in a 20 point game 7 rout. (See Knicks-Bulls, 1992)

God I hope the Hawks do it. That would be really cool if we had this kind of upset this season.

As much as I too would have loved to have seen an upset, it really is better for the league if the Celtics win the east. The next best thing would be for them to meet the Lakers in the Finals, or the Suns (I know, window of opportunity firmly shut).

Nightmare scenario for Stern; another appearance by the Spurs in the Finals. As great as they are and as much as I admire their play, their domination is killing the ratings.

Sometimes a scare in the first round will wake up a strong team. On the other hand, a scare from a team that finished under .500 in the weak ass east might be signal that for the Celts, "something's rotten in the cotton", as my grandma used to say.

Well, the Celtics, Lakers, and Hornets all won. I'm rooting hard for the Hornets to beat the Spurs. It's disappointing that it took 7 games for Boston to dispatch the Hawks; you have to wonder how they'll do against the Lebron James Show if they had a hard time with the Joe Johnson show, you know?

Also, I wonder if David Stern is going to crack down hard on the overly physical play. The Wizards/Cavs series was full of cheap shots, and today you had the Marvin Williams takedown of Rajon Rondo. If this kind of thing continues into the second round, I wonder if we'll see some suspensions.

That's true, but lately Boston sports teams have developed a habit of beating the snot out of Cleveland. :)

The Cavs and Celtics did split the season series this year, 2 - 2.

True. I was thinking more of playoff games, such as the Red Sox coming from behind to crush the Indians in the 2007 ALCS. That was a wonderful thing for a guy from Boston after having to deal with rude Indians fans and physical assault at Jacobs (erm, Progressive) Field.

Hopefully the Celts can give a healthy dose of deja-vu.

I was pretty much ready to ceded the West conference title to the Lakers, possibly San Antonio. Now, I know there is a heckuva long way to go, but.... the Hornets are looking soooo good against the Spurs in Game 2! We'll see how well things go on the road, but right now..... they have answers for everything the Spurs throw at them. And this is against an experienced, talented team with four championships. Nobody can afford to take any kind of a break against New Orleans this year!

Agree. The Hornets are shutting down the Spurs you need to shut down if you expect to beat them in the playoffs -- Parker and Ginobili. If they continue on this course, they'll move on.

However, the Spurs are quite capable of winning two at home, and if they do, it'll be interesting to see if NO will maintain their poise.

Hornets are shutting 'em down in the 2nd half. Both games it's been within a couple of points at halftime, and them BAM.

Not sure if the Hornets are just too fast and young, or better than the Spurs - or a little of both.

Frankly I'm shocked they're up 2-0.

Part of me is not surprised. Byron Scott is a capable coach. It's no fluke NO is the #1 seed in the West.

As for Cavs/Celtics, I'm thinking that the Cavs can win in 6. The Celtics have shown they are vulnerable, and despite the nation thinking the Celtics are still undefeatable, I think the Cavs can take them, and exploit their weaknesses.

Cavs/Celtics..... I hate to say it, but I see it as Celtics in six, possibly five. The Celtics have three consistent offensive threats, whereas the Cavs only have one. Sczerbiak and Gibson can help and probably will to some extent. However, the Celtics play a tough defensive game and are much better at it than Washington was.

Celtics 76-72. Brutal low-scoring game... and maybe an indicator of the rest of the series?
